Si è spenta nella sua casa di Belgrado il 23 dicembre scorso Vesna Vulović, protagonista il 26 gennaio del 1972 di un incidente aereo di cui fu la sola sopravvissuta.
Aviazione Civile aveva dedicato a questa storia e alla sua protagonista un approfondimento nel 2013 (qui la pagina).
Il DC-9-30 della JAT su cui Vesna prestava servizio come assistente di volo, in servizio da Stoccolma (via Copenhagen) a Belgrado, esplose in volo sulla ex Cecoslovacchia all’altezza di 10.160 metri per ragioni ancor oggi non del tutto chiarite.
La versione ufficiale dell’inchiesta determinò che a causare l’esplosione fosse stata una bomba collocata a bordo, mentre alcuni organi di stampa parlarono della possibilità di un errore da parte della difesa aerea cecoslovacca, che avrebbe colpito l’aereo con un missile terra-aria scambiandolo per un aereo della NATO impegnato in una ricognizione illegale.
Intrappolata nel galley di coda, e trattenuta da un carrello portavivande, Vesna sopravvisse miracolosamente non solo all’esplosione ma anche all’impatto col suolo, attutito, sembrerebbe, dalla folta boscaglia e dalla spessa coltre di neve.
Sebbene gravemente ferita (fratture al cranio, alle gambe e alle vertebre) Vesna riuscì ad uscire dal coma dopo 27 giorni, sostenendo poi un intenso programma di riabilitazione grazie al quale tornò a lavorare nella stessa JAT, incaricata tuttavia di compiti a terra.
Vesna Vulović è stata celebrata in patria come una eroina, diventando molto popolare. Nel 1990 criticò apertamente la politica del premier serbo Slobodan Milosevic, e fu licenziata dalla JAT. Da quel momento si impegnò attivamente in politica,
