Thread A350 XWB

Airbus has since its inception in 1966 used the principle of pre-equipped sections of the aircraft which are completed are remote locations and then flown to a Final Assembley Line (FAL) at Toulouse for final joining together to a complete aircraft. This principle, called FAL and pre-FAL, was invented by Airbus production father, Felix Kracht, as gifted as its original chief designer, Roger Beteille. The pre-FALs were a clever move to give the participating countries enough systems and integration work for them to give up their demand for multiple final assembly Lines, a devastating inefficiency that had plagued previous cooperation projects in Europe.

The historical pre-FALs have today morphed into competence centers with accompanying production facilities. The pre-FALs for the A350 are:

· St Nazaire on the French Atlantic coast, competence center and pre-FAL for forward sections and middle sections.

· Hamburg, competence center and pre-FAL for rear sections and vertical tails.

· Filton and Broughton UK, competence center and production unit for wings. These then gets shipped to Bremen who does the final pre-FAL assembly of the wings with their high lift systems.

· Getafe Spain, which is the pre-FAL for the horizontal tailplane produced at Puerto Real

· To this shall be added the engine, the Rolls Royce TXWB, which is produced at Derby UK.

All these pieces of the total airplane are produced as complete modules with all systems installed except cabin walls, seats, galleys etc. They are also tested for their correct functionality at the pre-FALs.

FIRST A350 WITH QATAR AIRWAYS LIVERY TAKES TO THE SKIES ABOVE TOULOUSE

Airline anticipates the arrival this year of its first A350 as global launch customer
Test aircraft proudly displays Qatar Airways livery
New airliner will significantly expand options for Qatar Airways young and modern fleet

02 Mar 2014

Toulouse, FRANCE – Qatar Airways’ eagerly awaited arrival of its first A350 later this year was one step closer this week, as the first A350 aircraft bearing Qatar Airways livery took to the skies above the home of Airbus in Toulouse, while embarking upon a test flight.
The latest test flights of the new A350 aircraft come after Qatar Airways CEO, His Excellency Mr. Akbar Al Baker, visited the home of Airbus in Toulouse last month to thank Airbus, on behalf of everyone at Qatar Airways, for their efforts in working to fulfil the airline’s ambitious A350 order, in line with its aggressive expansion plans.
Qatar Airways, a highly valued customer and partner with Airbus since the airline received its first Airbus aircraft in 1997, will see its fleet of young and modern aircraft strengthened significantly over the coming year with more than 200 aircraft currently on order across all modern Airbus product families, from the A320 through to the flagship A380-800, the world’s largest passenger aircraft.

Mr. Al Baker said: “We are committed to offering our customers the best possible experience when it comes to travelling with Qatar Airways, not only in terms of custom-built comfort features across all of our cabins, but with the continued expansion of our young and modern fleet.
“Qatar Airways is proud to be the launch customer for this new aircraft, which will offer a unique travel experience for all of our customers as we add to our rapidly expanding fleet, and we look forward to soon taking delivery of the first of our 80 A350s.”
The Airbus A350 will be one of the world’s most fuel efficient airliners, offering state of the art design and comfort to all that will travel on forthcoming flights on Qatar Airways, consistent with the airline’s five-star service values. Combined with the latest materials and construction techniques, Airbus’s latest addition is set to revolutionise air travel.
Qatar Airways already has a robust range of Airbus aircraft in its fleet. In addition to the 80 A350 it has on order, the airline has a current Airbus fleet comprising the A320, A300Freighter, A319LR, A321, A330 and A340 families. Qatar Airways is also a customer of the A380, the world’s largest passenger aircraft, and expects to take delivery of its first A380 later this year.
Qatar Airways has seen rapid growth in just 17 years of operation and currently has orders worth more than US $50 billion for more than 280 aircraft. The airline flies a modern fleet of 129 aircraft to 136 key business and leisure destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America.
As part of its aggressive expansion programme, Qatar Airways will launch routes to eight new destinations during 2014: Philadelphia (USA) from April 2; Larnaca (Cyprus) from April 29; Sabiha Gokcen Airport (Turkey) from May 22; Edinburgh (Scotland) from May 28; Miami (USA) from June 10 and Dallas/Fort Worth (USA) from July 1.

Airbus A350 available in 10-across in economy

Airbus has confirmed that its new A350 aircraft can be set-up in a "high-efficiency" configuration of 10-across in economy.
The manufacturer admitted that, although it would prefer airlines to go with a nine-across seating configuration, guaranteeing passengers a seat width of 18 inches, one airline has already ordered the 10-across variant.
Airbus last year launched a campaign showcasing research that passengers increasingly seek to research seat comfort prior to travelling (see news, November 18).

A350-XWB-9-across-economy.jpg

It would seem that this is the manufacturer's attempt to persuade airlines that they should go for the nine-across configuration rather than 10-across.

But as Chris Emerson, Airbus' senior vice-president of marketing, pointed out: "It's our job to give the airlines the platform, but then they have to decide how to utilise it."

It presents Airbus with a challenge similar to that faced by Boeing, which has seen some of the customer benefits of the new cabin eroded by most carriers opting for nine-across seating instead of the eight-across seating (see opinion, December 11).

Airbus has a total of 812 orders for the A350 aircraft in its various configurations — A350-800, A350-900 and A350-1000 — and admits that one customer has already ordered the "high-efficiency" configuration in economy of 10-across.

The A350-800 will carry 276 passengers, the A350-900 315 passengers and the A350-1000 369 passengers.

The news came as Airbus today unveiled details of both its Customer Definition Centre and of the onboard product catalogue available to airline customers.

The new centre allows airline customers to choose from a range of customisation options for the new aircraft, including the type of seating on board, and its configuration.

Re: Thread Alitalia / Etihad

http://www.journal-aviation.com/actualites/26429-alitalia-renonce-a-l-airbus-a350-800
