"I want to make it very clear that [Qatar Airways does] not transfer passengers onto [Air Italy and] we don't codeshare with them from beyond Europe – anywhere," Al Baker told FlightGlobal at the Farnborough air show today. "Nor does [Qatar Airways'] network into Italy interfere with the network of Air Italy vis-a-vis the timings."He explained that he was spelling out these points "to make sure that we are not perceived in any way of using Air Italy [for fifth-freedom flights], because we have signed an agreement with the United States".
Al Baker clarifies that his carrier has no interest in fifth-freedom services to the USA "because Qatar Airways is very well catered directly from our hub nonstop into the United States. We had never wanted to, and we have not planned for, any fifth-freedom services from Europe into the United States".
Come auspicavo, sono arrivate le prime conferme su una possibile membership "light" per Air Italy.Vero, ma potrebbero aspirare a fare come Fiji Airways, diventando inizialmente 'oneworld connect' partner invece di full member.

FARNBOROUGH: Oneworld Connect opens alliance door for Air Italy
Air Italy appears to be nearing an announcement regarding associate membership of the Oneworld alliance.
Akbar Al Baker, the chief executive of 49% shareholder Qatar Airways, told FlightGlobal at the Farnborough air show today that Air Italy is keen to become a full member of Oneworld in the long term, "but in the short term, we hope that we are meeting the requirements of Oneworld to become an associate member".
Al Baker explains that full membership could come once operations are fully ramped up. "We are still in our infancy, so we really need to create the volume for us to start to that process," he states.
Yesterday at the show, Air Italy's chief customer experience officer Rossen Dimitrov had also hinted an announcement regarding Oneworld membership was close: "Stand by for more news in the near future," he told FlightGlobal.
At the launch of Air Italy in February, Al Baker suggested the alliance would be keen to recruit an Italian carrier: "I'm sure they [Oneworld members] would be very excited because this is a country that is not properly covered by Oneworld members, so it is obvious that we would be an exciting candidate for them," he said at the time.
At the IATA AGM in early June, Oneworld revealed it was in discussions with a number of airlines to join via the Connect model, after Fiji Airwaysbecome the first carrier to sign up under the associate membership scheme.
