The first A350 XWB centre wing box has been delivered from Airbus’ site in Nantes, France to Airbus’ St Nazaire, France facility where it will be assembled into the first A350 XWB fuselage. The impressive A350 XWB centre wing box, made from 40% carbon fibre reinforced plastics, measures 6.5 metres by 5.5 metres and is 3.9 metres tall.
Loaded on to a special transport jig, the A350 XWB centre wing box left Nantes by river barge, together with an A380 centre wing box, travelling along the Loire River to reach St Nazaire a few hours later. Once the part is installed in to the A350 XWB fuselage, the sub-assembly will then be flown by Beluga from St Nazaire to Airbus’ brand new A350 XWB final assembly line in Toulouse, France.
“This is a great milestone and marks a significant step forwards for the A350 XWB programme as we get closer to the start of final assembly of the first aircraft”, said Didier Evrard, Head of the A350 XWB programme. “The delivery of the first A350 XWB centre wing box is the result of the team’s sheer hard work, expertise in the design and manufacturing of complex, large composite structures and their strong commitment to deliver to our customers on time and on quality.”
The first composite lay-up for the A350 XWB took place in Nantes in December 2009, marking the coming to life of the aircraft. The biggest panels produced for the centre wing-box, entirely made of carbon fibre, have a surface area of 36 square meters, making them the largest “monobloc” composite panels ever manufactured in Nantes.
Along with other Airbus facilities around the world, the Airbus plant in Nantes has a high expertise in composite material and is a leader in the manufacture and assembly of carbon fibre structural parts, such as the centre wing box and the keel beam for the A350 XWB. The A350 XWB structure is 53 per cent composite-based, including major elements such as wings and fuselage.
The A350 XWB Family consists of three passenger versions with true long-range capability. In terms of capacity, the A350-800 will offer 270 seats; the A350-900 holds 314 seats while the A350-1000 will have 350 seats respectively. The Family concept allows airlines to best match their A350 XWB fleets to route capacity demands, guaranteeing optimum revenue potential. To date, 35 customers have ordered 567 A350 XWBs. Airbus forecasts a demand over the next 20 years for around 5,800 new twin-aisle mid-size passenger aircraft.

Altro passo importante per il progetto:

Airbus Nantes delivers the first A350 XWB keel beam to Airbus Saint-Nazaire

Photo release

Blagnac, 12 August 2011

After delivery of the first A350 XWB centre wing box to Airbus Saint-Nazaire on August 8th, Airbus Nantes has delivered the second major A350 XWB component manufactured on the site - the keel beam. The exceptional convoy, over 25 metres long, left the Nantes site for the Loire, to be loaded onto the barge that transported it to the Airbus Saint-Nazaire site.
The keel beam provides structural continuity to the fuselage at the landing gear compartment. The A350 XWB programme is the first programme in which the keel beam and the aft lower shell have been combined to form a single major component. This immense part, made out of 70% composites, is 16.5m long and 4.3m wide and weighs 1.2 tonnes. Its assembly in the Nantes factory required the use of 10,000 fasteners to join 2000 parts.

Bangkok Airways to receive its first A350-800 in 2015
By Quintella Koh

Bangkok Airways expects to take delivery of its first Airbus A350-800 in 2015.
The carrier has a total of four A350-800s on order, but has not received a firm delivery schedule for the subsequent three, a company spokesman said.
The spokesman added that Bangkok Airways does not have immediate plans to convert its A350-800 orders to A350-900s.
Bangkok Airways also has two A319s and one A320 on order. The carrier expects to receive one of the A319s in November this year, and the A320 in October 2012.
The airline operates six A319s, three A320s, and eight ATR 72-500s.

Airbus, Goodrich and VSMPO-AVISMA reinforce their partnership on the A350 XWB programme

Confirms VSMPO’s strategic position within the EADS/Airbus supply chain

16 August 2011 Press Release
Airbus, the leading aircraft manufacturer, Goodrich Corporation, the global supplier of systems and services to the aerospace and defence markets and VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation, the Russian titanium manufacturer, have signed a long-term agreement for the supply of titanium forgings used for the manufacturing of the A350-1000’s main landing gears. The contract will cover supply until 2020.
Goodrich is to develop and provide the main landing gear, based on its experience in incorporating the latest technologies and materials, especially VSMPO’s high-strength titanium alloy. VSMPO has been awarded 100% share in the titanium forgings supplies.
VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation will potentially also machine the related titanium forging in the future in order to develop a vertically integrated titanium supply chain, starting from raw materials to finished products.
“This signature is the result of VSMPO’s long-term and stable activity with EADS/Airbus and Goodrich, including supplies of titanium products and research and development. It brings our relationship to the next level,” said Mikhail Voevodin, General Director of VSMPO-AVISMA Corporation. “Supply of the value added products for the А350 XWB aircraft will open more opportunities for our companies in the future.”
“This agreement represents a continuation of VSMPO’s and Goodrich’s growing relationship with EADS/Airbus as key suppliers of titanium and landing gears respectively. Building upon their successful experience on the A380 programme, we are confident that this agreement will allow the Goodrich-VSMPO alliance to continue its success on A350 XWB programme,” explained Christopher Buckley, Airbus’ Executive Vice President, Europe, Asia and Pacific.
Since the 1990s, VSMPO-AVISMA has become a major supplier for Airbus and its parent company EADS and today covers 60% of the group’s titanium needs in semi-finished products or titanium forgings. Based on the strategic and increasing importance of titanium use in every new aircraft programme and in the aeronautic industry as a whole, in April 2009, EADS/Airbus and VSMPO-AVISMA signed the biggest and longest-term frame contract for the supply of titanium for Airbus and other EADS divisions until 2020. In the scope of this 2009 agreement, Airbus manages the distribution to the whole EADS supply chain.
The A350 XWB Family consists of three passenger versions with true long-range capability. Offering three different sizes, airlines can best match their A350 XWB fleets to route capacity demands, guaranteeing optimum revenue potential. Airbus forecasts a demand over the next 20 years for around 5,800 new twin-aisle mid-size passenger aircraft.

Hawaiian remains committed to the A350-800

By Ghim-Lay Yeo

Hawaiian Airlines has reiterated its commitment to the Airbus A350-800 despite an increasing number of carriers switching to the larger -900 variant.
The airline's CEO Mark Dunkerley, while not ruling out the -900, said he believes the -800 better fits the carrier's needs.
"At the moment, that is certainly our belief," he said.
Hawaiian has six A350-800s on order, to be delivered from 2017.
Dunkerley noted that the question of switching to the -900s will be one that the airline will revisit from time to time but indicated that the matter is not a priority for the carrier right now. "We are open to assessing the -900s," said Dunkerley, adding that the issue is ultimately not "pressing".
Airbus has pushed entry into service for the -800 to mid-2016 from the second half of 2014 to focus its resources on the -900, which will make its first flight by year-end 2012.
The airframer has insisted it will build the -800, despite having a number of customers switching to the -900s and not having won any new orders for the -800 in the last three years.

Bangkok Airways appears to cancel A350-800 order
By David Kaminski-Morrow

Asian carrier Bangkok Airways appears to have cancelled its order for A350s, axing its deal for four -800 aircraft.
The erasure of the deal from Airbus's latest backlog figures is a further setback to the fortunes of the -800, which has experienced a shedding of orders by customers migrating to the larger -900.
Bangkok Airways was an early customer for the A350, reaching a deal for six of the type in 2005 before the twinjet was redesigned as the XWB.
It later ordered the XWB variant instead, the deal appearing on Airbus's books in December 2007 but only for four aircraft.
Airbus postponed development of the A350-800 earlier this year, setting back initial deliveries to mid-2016.
Bangkok Airways has not switched its order to the -900. The decision takes the -800's current backlog, to the end of August 2011, down to 131 aircraft.

Airbus A350 final assembly schedule slips to 2012

By: David Kaminski-Morrow Toulouse

Airbus has slipped the development schedule of the A350-900, with entry into service set for the first half of 2014 and the beginning of final assembly put back to early 2012.

The airframer had been hoping to start final assembly of the twinjet by the end of 2011 but had increasingly indicated that technological issues, and a desire to avoid immature sections being delivered too quickly, could force a slip.

EADS chief Louis Gallois said the A350, in particular, continues to have "our highest management attention".

The Airbus parent confirmed the schedule slip in its third-quarter results disclosure.

It said the start of final assembly is now scheduled for the first quarter of 2012 and entry into service for the first half of 2014. The aircraft had been due to enter service in 2013.

EADS said it is booking a charge of €200 million ($270 million) against the A350 programme in its third-quarter figures.

Airbus A350 XWB landing gear test bench ready for service

The A350 XWB’s main and nose landing gear test bench is ready for service at Airbus’ site in Filton, UK. This latest step in the A350 XWB’s progress is achieved more than one year before the aircraft’s first flight and two years before its entry into service.

Extensive testing campaigns are being carried out for all A350 XWBs systems and components well ahead of first flight. This will ensure the aircraft has a high level of performance, reliability and maturity built-in from day one.

The defining characteristics of the A350 XWB landing gear are simplicity and robustness with particular attention paid to corrosion prevention. These factors will bring a significant contribution to the A350 XWB’s high operational reliability and lower maintenance costs.
