VIRGIN AMERICA LEAPS INTO THE FUTURE AS LAUNCH CUSTOMER FOR NEW CFM ENGINE

Growing Airline First to Order New Fuel and Cost Efficient Advanced LEAP™ Engine – Total CFM Order Valued at $1.4 Billion
Virgin America Launches Fare Sale Today, with CFM/GE Purchasing Carbon Offsets for the First 5,000 Flights* Booked

San Francisco – June 15, 2011 – Virgin America today announces that it has selected CFM International’s advanced LEAP™ engine to power 30 new Airbus A320neo aircraft scheduled to begin delivery in 2016. In addition, the airline has selected the CFM56-5B engine to power 30 of its current technology A320s on order. The engine orders have a combined value of $1.4 billion at list price. In January, the airline announced it would nearly triple its fleet size with an order for 60 new Airbus A320 Family aircraft – including the first commercial order for the new eco-efficient Airbus A320neo. Together, the A320neo and the LEAP™ engine promise to deliver one of the world’s most fuel-efficient commercial aircraft, with more than 15 percent improved fuel efficiency, corresponding improvements in carbon efficiency and double digit reductions in NOx emissions. Virgin America estimates this will deliver a fuel cost savings to the carrier of $1.9 million per aircraft per year. To celebrate the new LEAP™ technology and its own growth, the carrier today launches a “Flyers, Start Your Engines” fare sale. To further mark the milestone order, CFM International and parent companies GE and Snecma (Safran Group) will purchase carbon offsets for the first 5,000* flights booked today at www.virginamerica.com.

“Choosing LEAP™ gives us the best of all worlds – the most advanced technology, significant fuel savings, consistency with our current fleet and the reliability of CFM,” said Virgin America President and CEO David Cush. “Our airline is known for taking a different approach to amenities, design and service in order to make travel better. But we’re just as committed to finding new ways to make travel more sustainable, even as we grow. The A320neo and the LEAP™ engine together will create one of the world’s most fuel-efficient commercial aircraft. Our investment today will ultimately help us take a major leap forward in terms of efficiency.”

Virgin America’s current A320 Family fleet is powered by the CFM56 engine and is up to 25 percent more fuel efficient than other domestic fleets and one of the most carbon-efficient in the U.S. on an RPM basis. The LEAP™ engine and the A320neo with the new wing tip “Sharklets” will yield even greater efficiencies. Compared to aircraft powered by today’s best engines, the A320neo with the LEAP™ engine will provide more than 15 percent improved fuel efficiency and equivalent reductions in CO2 emissions, double digit reductions in NOx emissions, reduced engine noise and lower operating costs. Based on Virgin America’s use and operation of the aircraft, it is estimated that the LEAP™ advances will offer Virgin America an annual fuel savings of $1.9 million per aircraft at current fuel prices. With the LEAP™ engine, the A320neo aircraft will also offer increased performance range and emit 3,600 fewer tons of CO2 per aircraft on an annual basis.

Tickets are on sale today and can be purchased at Virgin America’s Web site (www.virginamerica.com) and at 1.877.FLY.VIRGIN (1.877.359.8474).***

To mark the order, engine manufacturer CFM International and parent companies GE and Snecma (Safran Group) will purchase Carbonfund.org offsets for the first 5,000 flights* booked today at www.virginamerica.com. Carbonfund.org, the nation’s leading nonprofit carbon offset provider, offers independently verified projects which are focused on emissions reduction and energy efficiency. Virgin America was the first U.S. airline to allow guests to offset the carbon footprint of their flight from the air – via Carbonfund.org offsets offered on the Red™ in-flight entertainment platform. The airline voluntarily offsets the carbon footprint of its headquarters operation on an annual basis. For more on the program, visit: www.carbonfund.org/virginamerica

Since its launch in August 2007, Virgin America has created 2000 new jobs and grown to serve multiple destinations across North America. As one of the few growing U.S. airlines, Virgin America continues to expand its fleet, growing from its current 39 aircraft to a projected fleet of 52 aircraft by mid-2012. The low-fare airline has expanded service to Orlando, Dallas-Fort Worth, Los Cabos, Cancun and Chicago in the past six months alone. The airline will add 500 new jobs on annual basis and expand to two-to-three new destinations per year over the next several years. Known for friendly service, beautifully designed cabins and inventive amenities, like touch-screen entertainment at every seat, Virgin America has swept the major reader-based travel awards since its launch, including “Best Domestic Airline” in Condé Nast Traveler’s Readers’ Choice Awards and Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards.

“Virgin continues to lead the industry at making airline travel more sustainable,” said Mindy S. Lubber, president of Ceres, a coalition of investors and NGOs that works with companies on sustainability challenges. “Its purchase of highly-efficient new engines demonstrates that business expansion can be done in a way that is beneficial to both the environment and the bottom line.”

With investments in the A320neo, LEAP™ engines and green buildings, the California-based Virgin America is committed to improving its efficiency – even as it grows. The airline is also proud to be affiliated with the Virgin Group, which has committed to reinvesting all profits from Virgin-transport related businesses to renewable fuels research and other initiatives that combat climate change.

LEAP™ is a product of CFM International (CFM), a 50/50 joint company between Snecma (Safran group) and GE.

CEB doubles fleet again with new USD3.8B Airbus Deal
The Philippines’ largest national flag carrier, Cebu Pacific (PSE:CEB) announced today that it has ordered 30 new Airbus A321neo and 7 A320 aircraft. The order at list price is valued at approximately USD3.8 billion, the largest single aircraft order ever made by a Philippine carrier.

CEB turned into firm orders its existing options for 7 Airbus A320 aircraft, and has placed a new order for thirty (30) A321neo (New Engine Option) aircraft with options for a further ten (10) A321neos. The A321neos will be a first of its type to operate in the Philippines, being a larger and longer-haul version of the familiar Airbus A320.

The said orders for A320 and A321neo aircraft will be delivered between 2015 and 2021. These are on top of firm orders for 18 Airbus A320 aircraft to be delivered from the 2nd half of 2011 until 2014. This increases Cebu Pacific’s total firm orders of Airbus aircraft to 55.

“Cebu Pacific has made the largest firm order for the Airbus A321neo aircraft in the world. These 220-seater aircraft will be a real ‘game changer’ for Cebu Pacific because the A321neo will have a much longer range. We will be able to serve cities in Australia, India and Northern Japan, places the A320 cannot reach,” said CEB CEO and President Lance Gokongwei.

“The aircraft will reduce our unit cost per seat to a level that cannot be achieved flying A320s. This means that Cebu Pacific will be able to offer even lower fares to our guests and be much more competitive with anyone flying less cost efficient aircraft. This will allow us to create highly skilled, highly paid airline jobs for Filipino pilots, cabin crew and airline staff,” added Gokongwei.

Cebu Pacific currently utilizes 33 brand-new aircraft, 25 of which are from the Airbus A320 family and 8 ATR turbo-prop aircraft. By 2021, CEB will more than double its fleet and triple its capacity.

John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers, said, "With the A321neo, Cebu Pacific will be able to fly more people further at significantly lower cost per seat than any other competing aircraft, and with less impact on the environment."

The A321neo is the largest model in the recently launched A320neo series. It incorporates new engines and large wing-tip devices called sharklets, allowing CEB to achieve 15% reduced fuel burn, and function on a lower operating cost.

The new engine types offered on the A320neo are CFM International’s LEAP-X and Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G. Cebu Pacific has not made an engine choice at this time.

Since its inception in 1996, the Philippines’ low-fare pioneer, CEB, had already flown 50 million passengers and counting. It broke local aviation records for passengers carried in a month in April and May of 2011, carrying more than 1 million passengers per month.

This year, CEB will carry more than 12 million passengers. It achieved a year-on-year growth of 19% in 2010.

16 June 2011 Press Release
Cebu Pacific of the Philippines has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Airbus for the purchase of 30 A321neo aircraft. The carrier has also exercised existing options for seven more standard A320s, increasing to 41 its total firm orders for the Airbus single aisle product line. The aircraft will join an existing fleet of A319s and A320s flying on the carrier's fast growing domestic and regional network.

"The A320 Family has played a key role in enabling us to build an efficient, profitable, value-based business," said Lance Gokongwei, Cebu Pacific President and CEO. "The addition of more A320s and the A321neo allows us to expand further in the Asia-Pacific region, and continue offering our trademark low fares."

Cebu Pacific's extensive network covers 33 domestic and 16 international destinations, including Osaka, Seoul (Incheon), Beijing, Jakarta, Bangkok and Singapore.

"We are pleased that Cebu Pacific has reaffirmed its commitment to the A320 Family and is also now set to add the A321neo to its fleet," said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers, Airbus. "With the A321neo Cebu Pacific will be able to fly more people further at significantly lower cost per seat than any other competing aircraft, and with less impact on the environment."

The A321neo is the largest model in the recently launched A320neo series, which incorporates new engines and large wing tip devices called sharklets. The advances will deliver fuel savings of 15 percent and additional range capability of over 500 nautical miles (950 kilometers), or the ability to carry two tonnes more payload at a given range. For the environment, the fuel savings translate into some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft per year. In addition, the aircraft will provide a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions and reduced engine noise.

The A320 Family (A318, A319, A320 and A321) is recognised as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Over 7,000 A320 Family aircraft have already been ordered and more than 4,700 delivered to more than 330 customers and operators worldwide. The A320neo series will have over 95% airframe commonality with the existing models, enabling it to fit seamlessly into existing A320 Family fleets

The new engines types offered on the A320neo Family are CFM International’s LEAP-X and Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G.

GoAir (India) ordina 72 A320neo

Indian LCC GoAir inks deal for 72 Airbus A320neo
By Quintella Koh

Indian low-cost carrier GoAir has placed a firm order for 72 Airbus A320neo aircraft worth $7.2 billion at list prices.

The airline expects to take delivery of them from 2015 and complete it by end-2020, said managing director Jeh Wadia. An engine selection between the CFM International Leap-X and Pratt & Whitney PW1100G has not been made, he added.

Another 10 options for regular A320s have been firmed up, and these will be delivered over the next 18-24 months, said Wadia. GoAir's existing fleet comprises 10 A320s, and the orders will significantly boost its presence in the growing, yet highly competitive, Indian domestic low-cost market.

getAsset.aspx

Its main competitors are the larger carriers IndiGo and SpiceJet. IndiGo operates a fleet of 39 A320s and, in January, ordered 150 A320neo and 30 regular A320s. SpiceJet has a fleet of 30 Boeing 737-800/900s, with another 33 due to be delivered. It has also ordered 15 Bombardier Q-400 turboprops.

GoAir intends to use its aircraft to grow its domestic network, saying that this remains "underserved".

"India will remain underserved beyond 2020, so (GoAir's) focus will be on the domestic market," said Wadia. "India offers a very huge opportunity. China has 1,100 aircraft, while India has only 350."

GoAir orders 72 new Airbus planes; deal worth $6.1 billion

MUMBAI: GoAir said on Thursday it has placed an order for 72 new A320 Airbus aircraft in a deal worth up to $6.1 billion at list prices.

"These are all firm orders and the deliveries will start in 2015. We may take as many as 15 planes each year," the company's managing director Jeh Wadia told Dow Jones Newswires in Mumbai.

The basic A320 is priced at $85 million, which would value the deal at $6.1 billion, but airlines normally negotiate undisclosed discounts from Airbus when buying in bulk.

The booming Indian market has become a key source of business for France-based Airbus, which won its biggest ever order in January from GoAir's local competitor IndiGo.

Indigo ordered 180 A320s, worth $15.6 billion at list prices.

ET had last week reported that, Jet Airways and GoAir will place aircraft orders worth $6.5 billion with Airbus SAS at the Paris Air Show later this month, signaling that the domestic aviation sector may be turning the corner after grappling with rising fuel prices and slow economic growth.

Apart from these orders, national carrier Air India plans to take 10 A330s and 16 A320s on a dry lease (to rent an aircraft without the crew). The week-long Paris Air Show will start on June 20. It is the biggest annual event in the commercial aviation industry where some of the biggest deals are struck. GoAir could order more aircraft , one of the sources said.

Jet Airways' order, confirmed by the company's chairman Naresh Goyal, was for 10 wide-body A330 aircraft worth $2.5 billion and would be used to help it expand its routes in Europe.

GoAir's Wadia said the firm would take delivery of 10 A320 planes from a previous order in the next two years.

Commitment includes 78 A320neo aircraft

16 August 2011 Press Release
Qantas has selected for the first time Airbus A320 aircraft to launch its new premium airline to service routes to/from Australia and the Asian region. In addition, Jetstar has selected the Airbus A320 to continue its growth in Australia and Asia. The commitment to order a minimum of 106 A320 Family aircraft includes 78 A320neo jets, making Qantas the latest airline to select the world’s best selling single-aisle aircraft.
The decision to go with Airbus for its short to medium haul operations underpins the Qantas long term strategy to build up a fleet of the world’s most fuel efficient and reliable aircraft.
“We are delighted to be investing in Airbus’ fuel efficient A320 Family, including the new A320neo as part of Qantas’ international transformation plan and Jetstar’s pan-Asian expansion.” said Alan Joyce, Qantas CEO. “The A320 Family’s outstanding operational efficiency and comfort, paired with its environmental credentials, make it the right choice for Qantas.”
“Qantas is an exceptionally forward looking and pioneering airline and we are delighted to play such a significant role in the company’s future strategy.” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “In a fiercely competitive market this is a great endorsement for our eco-efficient A320neo and A320 aircraft with their unique passenger appeal thanks to their wider cabin.”
The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family to enter service in 2015. It incorporates latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel and CO2 emission savings.
In parallel with this new order, Qantas has decided to adapt deliveries of the last six of its twenty A380s to the airline’s new business plan. This affects deliveries after 2013.
At present, Qantas’ A380 fleet stands at ten, making the carrier the third largest A380 operator worldwide.
A320 Family orders to date already exceed 7,800, reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. To date over 4,700 have been delivered to over 330 customers and operators worldwide. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality with the existing A320 models while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload. It is offered with engines from CFM International’s LEAP-X or Pratt & Whitney’s PurePower PW1100G.
Qantas will make its engine decision at a later date.
Airbus has received more than 1200 A320neo orders and commitments since its launch just nine months ago, in December 2010.

Qualche dettaglio in più da Qantas:

Qantas Group to Place Fleet Order: Building a Stronger Qantas - New international Strategy

Sydney, 16 August 2011
The Qantas Group today announced it would acquire up to 110 Airbus A320 aircraft, plus 194 purchase rights and options, to support fleet renewal and growth for the next 10 to 15 years.
Smart investment in aircraft is part of the Qantas Group’s five-year plan to build a truly modern, customer-focused and competitive global airline business.
The Group has committed to order up to 110 A320s (106 confirmed from Airbus and four additional aircraft, either purchased or leased, subject to availability). These aircraft will facilitate capacity growth across Jetstar’s domestic and international operations, the launch of Jetstar Japan and the establishment of Qantas’ new premium Asia-focused airline - while the purchase rights and options provide the Group with significant flexibility to pursue further growth opportunities on favourable commercial terms.
The Group will become a major customer for the new more fuel-efficient A320neo. The commitment for 110 A320s includes 78 A320neos with 194 rights and options on further purchases.
In addition, as a result of the new strategy and network changes for Qantas international announced today, Qantas will defer the delivery of its final six Airbus A380s by up to six years, driving substantial capital cost savings. Qantas’ A380 fleet will reach 12 aircraft by the end of 2011 and 14 aircraft by mid-2013. The remaining six A380s will be delivered to coincide with the retirement of Qantas’ last six Boeing 747ER aircraft.
Qantas Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce said the agreement with Airbus represented the most effective allocation of capital to growth opportunities.
“This is an investment that will position the Qantas Group very strongly in the competitive Asia-Pacific aviation market, while containing costs,” Mr Joyce said.
“The first of the A320s will be allocated to the new Jetstar Japan venture between the Qantas Group, Japan Airlines and Mitsubishi. We are using the Qantas Group’s scale in the aircraft purchasing market to establish this exciting new airline. Financial management of the fleet will rest with Jetstar Japan and will be funded independently of the Group’s balance sheet.
“The remainder of the A320 order will go to other new ventures, including Qantas’ premium airline serving the Australia-Asia market, and to renewing Jetstar’s global fleet – giving us the flexibility to meet growth requirements where needed.
“Our A380 delivery program is well-advanced, while later this year the first of our Boeing 747s reconfigured with A380 product, seats and inflight entertainment will enter service.
“As our flagship, the A380 is a fabulous aircraft and receives tremendous feedback from our customers. It will continue to lead our long-haul fleet. However, the review and restructure of our international network has led to the decision to defer six of the A380s we have in order.
“Our priority is to allocate capital to those businesses which provide the best return on investment. In this context we will continue to review our capital expenditure. This is an approach we have taken previously with the cancellation of B787 aircraft, and future B787 deliveries, like all aircraft orders, will be reviewed as required.

“We are delighted to have reached agreement with Airbus for this important restructuring of our fleet plan, which reflects our commitment to realise growth potential while maintaining prudent financial management.”
Changes to the Qantas Group fleet plan are as follows:
- The purchase of between 28 and 32 current-generation A320 aircraft.
- The purchase of 78 new A320neo aircraft with 194 rights and options for further purchases.
- The rescheduling of six A380 deliveries by up to six years.

CIT Aerospace, a unit of CIT Group Inc. (NYSE: CIT), a global leader in transportation finance has signed a purchase agreement with Airbus for the 50 A320neo family aircraft, which it had committed to at the 49th Le Bourget airshow on 21st June 2011.
This deal brings the total number of Airbus aircraft ordered by CIT since 1999 to 237 comprising 191 A320 Family aircraft (including the 50 A320neo aircraft), 41 A330s, five A350 XWBs of which 144 have been delivered so far.
“This A320neo order with Airbus allows CIT Aerospace to continue to add young and technologically-advanced aircraft to our portfolio, enabling us to provide the modern, fuel efficient aircraft that our customers demand,” said C. Jeffrey Knittel, President of Transportation Finance at CIT.

“This latest order from CIT underscores the leasing market’s continuing strong appetite for modern, fuel efficient and reliable aircraft”, said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “In the short to medium haul segment, the A320neo family with 15 percent lower fuel consumption, is not only good for business but also for the environment”.
Close to 7,700 A320 Family aircraft have already been ordered and more than 4,700 delivered to more than 330 customers and operators worldwide reaffirming its position as the world’s best-selling single-aisle aircraft family. The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.
The A320neo is a new engine option for the A320 Family entering into service from 2015 and incorporates latest generation engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings. This reduction in fuel burn is equivalent to 1.4 million litres of fuel – the consumption of 1,000 mid size cars. This saves 3,600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year, the amount of C02 absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo NOx emissions are 50% below CAEP/6 and this aircraft also has considerably a smaller noise footprint.

Cebu Pacific of the Philippines has finalised a firm order with Airbus for the purchase of 30 A321neo aircraft. The contract firms up a previously announced MOU signed in June. With this latest purchase agreement the fast-growing carrier has increased its total firm orders for the A320 Family to 71, of which 16 have already been delivered. The airline currently operates 25 A320 Family aircraft, including the 16 purchased from Airbus and nine leased aircraft.
Cebu Pacific plans to configure its A321neo fleet with 220 seats in a single class layout and will fly the aircraft across its expanding pan-Asian network. This currently includes 34 domestic and 16 international destinations, including Osaka, Seoul (Incheon), Beijing, Jakarta, Bangkok and Singapore. The airline will make a decision on its engine selection for the aircraft at a later date.
"The A321neo will enable us to increase capacity on our key routes while benefiting from the lowest operating costs of any aircraft in this size category," said Lance Gokongwei, Cebu Pacific President and CEO. "With these aircraft we will continue to build upon our reputation for offering high quality low fares service with one of the most modern and youngest fleets in Asia."
"Cebu Pacific has proven itself to be one of the most efficient and successful low cost carriers in the Asian region," said John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer, Customers, Airbus. "With the step-change in fuel savings offered by the A321neo the airline will be able to strengthen its position further, flying more people at even lower cost than before."
The A321neo is the largest model in the recently launched A320neo series, which incorporates new engines and large wing tip devices called sharklets. Lufthansa has placed a firm order for 30 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft. This contract follows the selection by the Lufthansa Supervisory Board of the A320neo Family in March this year. The order comprises 25 A320neo and five A321neo aircraft. These will be powered by new-generation Pratt & Whitney PW1100G turbofan engines. With this latest order the Lufthansa Group, Airbus’ biggest airline customer, will have purchased a combined total of 443 Airbus aircraft.
The A320neo Family also incorporates large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together with the new more efficient engines, will deliver up to 15 percent in fuel savings. This will represent some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft, per year. In addition, the A320neo will provide a double-digit reduction in NOx emissions and reduced engine noise, thus being a good neighbour at any airport where Lufthansa is operating the aircraft.
“We are proud that Lufthansa has chosen the eco-efficient A320neo Family as its solution for sustainable growth, and one which will fit seamlessly into its existing Airbus A320 fleet,” said John Leahy, Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “Since its launch in December last year, around 1,200 orders and commitments for the ‘neo’ have given it the fastest rate of sales ever for any commercial aircraft.”
Today the Lufthansa Group is Airbus’ biggest operator worldwide with more than 360 Airbus aircraft currently in service. These include: 254 A320 Family; 38 A330s; 65 A340s; and eight A380s. With this latest order for 30 aircraft, the Lufthansa Group has an order backlog which includes 85 A320 Family aircraft, eight A330s, and seven A380s.
The A320 Family (A318, A319, A320 and A321) is recognised as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. Over 7,500 Airbus A320 Family aircraft have been ordered and more than 4,700 delivered to more than 330 customers and operators worldwide. The A320neo Family will have over 95 percent airframe commonality with the existing models making it an easy fit into today’s fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles more range or two tonnes more payload at a given range.

U.S.-based global carrier becomes latest customer for Airbus’ market-leading, single-aisle aircraft

20 July 2011 Press Release
Airbus and American Airlines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of AMR Corporation, have signed a firm contract for American to acquire 260 modern, fuel-efficient Airbus A320 Family aircraft. The contract calls for flexibility for the airline to take delivery of A319s, A320s and A321s, with 130 featuring Airbus’ New Engine Option (neo). All 260 aircraft will feature large, fuel-saving wingtip devices known as Sharklets.
The deal between Airbus and American was announced today at the airline’s Dallas/Ft. Worth hub. The airline plans to announce its choice of engines to power the aircraft at a later date.
“We are pleased to add the Airbus single-aisle family as an important component of our fleet modernization strategy,” said AMR and American Airlines President Tom Horton. “The A320 Family of aircraft will help us achieve improved fuel efficiency and other operational savings, while offering our customers state-of-the-art technology and an enhanced travel experience. We look forward to a successful partnership with Airbus.”
“We are extremely proud and gratified once again to count American Airlines among Airbus’ global customers,” said Airbus President and CEO Tom Enders. “The order by American represents a strong endorsement of our constantly improving single-aisle product line. All of us at Airbus look forward to seeing the American Airlines livery on A320 Family aircraft – and we look forward to fulfilling our commitment to providing the people of American, as well as their passengers, with the highest level of support and service in the industry.”
The A320 Family is recognized as the benchmark single-aisle aircraft family. The aircraft feature the latest technology available today, the widest and most comfortable cabin, and the highest degree of operational commonality. With 99.7% reliability and extended servicing periods, the A320 Family has the lowest operating costs of any single-aisle aircraft today. More than 4700 A320 Family aircraft are in airline operation around the world today.
The A320neo, launched in late 2010, is the latest product innovation at Airbus. These new A319, A320 and A321 models feature a choice of two new engines – the PurePower PW1100G from Pratt & Whitney or the LEAP-X from CFM International. Together, the Sharklets and new engine choices result in a 15 percent fuel burn reduction, corresponding to an annual carbon dioxide reduction of 3,600 metric tons per aircraft. Compared to prior-generation narrowbody aircraft, the fuel savings could easily amount to up to 30 percent. Since launching the innovative product in December of last year, Airbus has received orders and commitments for almost 1200 A320neo Family aircraft.
Airbus is the leading aircraft manufacturer with the most modern and comprehensive family of airliners on the market, ranging in capacity from 100 to more than 500 seats. More than 10,700 Airbus aircraft have been sold to more than 440 customers and operators worldwide, and more than 6,700 have been delivered since the company first entered the market in the early seventies.

9e0ae8a0d2.jpg

15 November 2011 Press Release
The State of Qatar’s national airline, Qatar Airways, has selected the A320neo as the reference aircraft for expanding its short to medium haul fleet and has increased its order for the A380. The agreement signed at the 2011 Dubai Airshow, is a firm contract for 50 A320neo aircraft and five additional A380s.

The A320neo is an option for the A320 Family and incorporates new engines and large "Sharklet" wing tip devices, which together will deliver 15 percent in fuel savings, representing some 3,600 tonnes less CO2 per aircraft per year.

“The A320neo promises to be a great aircraft which is why we have chosen it to form the backbone of our future single aisle expansion. Together with our increase in A380s and our orders for A350 XWB, we are continuing investing in an integrated Family of the world’s most modern and fuel efficient aircraft,” said Akbar Al Baker, Qatar Airways CEO.

“Qatar Airways supported the development of the Airbus A320neo very early on. It is with great pride that we are announcing this large order today including an additional five A380s,” said John Leahy Airbus Chief Operating Officer, Customers. “We appreciate having built a unique relationship with our friends at Qatar Airways over the years.”

Qatar Airways has ordered a total of 43 A320 Family aircraft directly from Airbus and, including leased aircraft has 38 in its fleet. The last four of the A320s on order will be provisioned for “Sharklets” following a recently signed agreement. Qatar Airways’ total A380 order increases to 10 aircraft following its initial order for two made in 2003, which was later raised to five in 2007. Qatar Airways’ current in-service fleet also includes the region’s largest number of A330s (29).

The A320neo has over 95 percent airframe commonality making it an easy fit into existing fleets while offering up to 500 nautical miles (950 kilometres) more range or two tonnes more payload. The A320neo reduces fuel burn by 15%, which is equivalent to 1.4m litres of fuel – the consumption of 1000 mid size cars. This saves 3600 tonnes of C02 per aircraft per year, the amount of CO2 absorbed by 240,000 mature trees. The A320neo aircraft also has a considerably smaller noise footprint. Sales of the neo have reached over 1,200 orders and commitments in under a year, making it the fastest selling aircraft ever.

Typically seating 525 passengers in a three class layout, the A380 is capable of flying 8,300 nautical miles / 15,300 kilometres non-stop, enabling direct service from Qatar to New York. As of today total firm orders for the aircraft stand at over 240 from 18 customers worldwide.

Post-Spat, Qatar Goes For A380, A320NEO

Nov 15, 2011

By Robert Wall wall@aviationweek.com
DUBAI

Hours after publicly upbraiding Airbus, Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker made an about-face and signed a deal for up to eight A380s and 80 A320NEOs for a list price of $6.4 billion for the firm portion. The NEOs will be powered by Pratt & Whitney PW1100G geared turbofans.

Both deals have been long anticipated, but were thrown into doubt earlier today when Al Baker voiced unhappiness at this year’s change in the specification of the A350-1000 delay and over an “impass” on the deal he eventually signed - he would not detail what the disagreement was over, only saying it was not an issue of pricing.

Al Baker says Airbus is now reviewing that plan, which has also drawn fire from Emirates Airlines president Tim Clark. But Airbus chief operating officer for customers, John Leahy, says there are no plans to change the latest design. It has more range and payload than the 777-300ER, and 25% lower fuel burn, he asserts, adding that he plans to send a sales team to Doha to “explain” the specification of the aircraft.

The A320NEO deal is for 50 firm aircraft and 30 options, with the A380 deal split between five firm and thre options.

The A380 deal doubles Qatar’s order book for the type. The first aircraft is due in the second half of 2013, with the first from this batch of orders to arrive around 2015. The aircraft will have eight first class and 42 business class seats, with the rest in economy. The total count is around 515 seats.

The engine selection for the A380 is expected before the end of the month, with the selection process between the Engine Alliance GP7200 and Rolls-Royce Trent 900 almost complete, an airline official says.

The A320NEO “will be the backbone of our future single aisle expansion,” Al Baker says. Qatar Airways will be the first operator for the A319NEO, the A320NEO, and the A321NEO. The A320NEO will come first, in the second half of 2015, followed by the A319 and A321 each six months later.

Qatar is buying 30 A320s, 14 A321s, and six A319s.

Al Baker says the deal does not kill his interest in the Bombardier CSeries. “We are still interested in that airplane” and talks with Bombardier will resume once the current fleet purchases are resolved.

Qatar Airways Selects Pratt & Whitney PurePower® PW1100G-JM Engines for Airbus A320neo Aircraft Family

11-15-11-qatar-order.gif

DUBAI AIR SHOW, Nov 15, 2011 – Qatar Airways has selected Pratt & Whitney PurePower® PW1100G-JM engines for its order of 50 firm A320neo family aircraft. The deal includes 100 PW1100G-JM engines with a PureSolutionSM maintenance service agreement. Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2015. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX).

“Qatar Airways selected the PurePower® engine after doing a detailed technical and commercial evaluation to determine the best choice for our operations and growth strategy,” said Qatar Airways Chief Executive Officer Akbar Al Baker. “We required both the improvement in fuel burn and reduction in maintenance costs, which is exactly what the PurePower® engine provides.”

Each Qatar Airways Airbus A320neo family aircraft will be powered by two PurePower® PW1100G-JM engines with benefits including double-digit reductions in fuel burn, environmental emissions, engine noise and operating costs when compared with today’s engines.

“We are very pleased that Qatar Airways – the first airline to enter service with the A320neo family - selected the PurePower® engine," said Todd Kallman, Pratt & Whitney Commercial Engines & Global Services president. “The PurePower® engine offers the right solution to help today’s airlines reduce their costs and operate in a more environmentally friendly way.”

The PurePower® engine uses an advanced gear system allowing the engine’s fan to operate at a different speed than the low-pressure compressor and turbine. The combination of the gear system and an all-new advanced core delivers the fuel efficiency and environmental benefits.

Qatar Airways is one of the world’s fastest growing airlines. Ranked Five Star for service excellence, Qatar was voted the best airline in the world in a 2011 Skytrax survey of airline customers. The Doha-based airline currently operates a modern fleet of more than 100 aircraft to over 100 destinations across Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia Pacific, North America and South America.

Pratt & Whitney is a world leader in the design, manufacture and service of aircraft engines, space propulsion systems and industrial gas turbines. United Technologies, based in Hartford, Conn., is a diversified company providing high technology products and services to the global aerospace and building industries.
