Air Malta to suspend all flights as government imposes travel ban
Air Malta is suspending operations, following a decision by the Maltese government to ban all commercial air travel to the country because of the coronavirus outbreak.
The Maltese ban applies to all flights scheduled for departure after 23:59 on 20 March.
Air Malta says it is likely to operate some flights for humanitarian, repatriation or other reasons related to the crisis. These are exempt from the restrictions.
Cirium schedules data shows that in February the flag carrier operated to 24 destinations per week from its base at Malta International, a capacity of nearly 40,000 seats. Air Malta's most popular route was to London Heathrow with two return flights per day, representing just over 2,600 seats per week in each direction.
The carrier has seven Airbus A320neos and a trio of A320neos, Cirium fleets data indicates. Cirium
Penso che del tutto potrebbe non sospenderle.Aspettiamo di vedere quando anche AZ sospenderà l’attività di volo.
Ryanair may shut down all operations
Ryanair is cutting 80% of its scheduled flights and could ground its entire fleet in response to the coronavirus.
From midnight on 18 March until midnight 24 March the group will shut down operations on four-fifths of its routes. It expects that after 24 March "most if not all Ryanair Group flights will be grounded", with the possible exception of a few key routes, mostly between the UK and Ireland.
"Over the past few days, the spread of the Covid-19 virus has led most EU governments to impose severe travel bans and restrictions, which have had a negative impact on the schedules of all Ryanair airlines, causing widespread cancellations and travel disruptions across the network," the group notes.
Cirium data shows that in February 2020 Ryanair had 13,300 weekly return flights scheduled, providing a capacity of over 2.5 million seats.
Before the sudden escalation of the health crisis in Europe, Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary had on 3 March said he expected bookings would be soft for around three weeks and "then people will get bored of the coronavirus", allowing a return to normal demand in May/June.
Ukrainian flag carrier ordered to suspend all flights
Ukraine International Airlines has suspended all scheduled flights, following the introduction of new legislation on 17 March to halt border crossings in a bid to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the country.
The flag carrier states that it has cancelled more than 2,000 flights to comply with the new law, which makes “noncompliance with disease control and prevention measures during the quarantine period” a criminal offence.
On 17 March, the airline operated 11 additional international flights to bring home “as many Ukrainian citizens” as possible. To bring other citizens home, It will operate inbound charter flights which it says it is “capable of mobilising within short timeframes” at the request of Ukraine’s government.
“The airline is well aware of the inconveniences this causes passengers of cancelled flights. If the force-majeure circumstances formalised in Ukraine’s legislation on 17 March 2020 had not occurred, Ukraine International would never have suspended flights,” states the airline.
Cirium fleets data shows that Ukraine International operates a fleet of 36 aircraft, comprising 20 Boeing 737-800s, four 737-900ERs, three 777-200ERs, two 767-300ERs and seven Embraer jets.
It serves 49 destinations. The majority of which are in Europe or east of Europe, but two are in North America: New York JFK and Toronto.
