Following advice from the Met Office, the national air traffic service (NATS) has introduced restrictions to UK airspace this morning as a result of volcanic ash drifting across the UK from Iceland.
These measures currently affect Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports, which are closed. Passengers are instructed NOT to travel to these airports. All arriving and departing flights are currently suspended.
We anticipate that all flights in and out of Heathrow and Stansted airports will be suspended from 12:00 today. Therefore, we strongly advise passengers intending to fly from this time not to travel to the airport today.
Passengers who were due to fly today should contact their airline for re-ticketing information.
We will provide further updates as we get more information from NATS

L'Irlanda sembra immune al momento, anche Parigi è ancora fuori dalla portata delle nubi, come altri aeroporti francesi nel nord-ovest. Potrebbero eventualmente accogliere loro gli aerei provenienti da destinazioni lontane.

L'eruzione era gia' cominciata ieri sera e gia' si sapeva che avrebbe impattato Londra.
La grande maggioranza dei voli intercontinentali e' stata bloccata negli aeroporti di partenza.
Ad esempio noi abbiamo aerei bloccati a LAX, PVG, NRT, DXB, NBO, ecc...

Dubito fortemente che alle 18 si riparta. Anzi, con il calar della notte è sicuro che non si voli. Quando l'Etna ha eruttato l'ultima volta il CTA operava solo con la luce del giorno per poter monitorare la nube di cenere, mancando allora il radar apposito (da poco operativo se non sbaglio). Di notte è molto più difficile individuare le ceneri sospese, e quindi ancora più rischioso volare. E questo durò per almeno due mesi. Per riaprire se ne riparla domattina, ma viste le dimensioni non c'è da escludere qualche giorno di blocco, affinchè le ceneri si spargano. Ma questo premettendo che il vulcano smetta di emettere cenere ora.

Fa impressione vedere su quella mappa fin dove sia volata la cenere.
Incredibile davvero.
Ed effettivamente è un bel problema dover gestire la chiusura degli aeroporti inglesi, in particolare di quelli di Londra.
Finchè si trattava della Norvegia i disagi sarebbero stati assolutamente limitati, con tutto il rispetto per i norvegesi!

Perchè è una nuvola di cenere, occluderebbe i motori, soffocandoli. Non è solo una questione di visibilità, ma soprattutto di alimentazione e combustione dei motori.
