Islanda, erutta vulcano: chiusura spazi aerei europei

Fonte BBC news:

An estimated three-quarters of flights were cancelled on Saturday. About 20 countries closed their airspace - some have extended flight bans into Monday.
Disruption is now said to be greater than that after 9/11 and the volcanic activity shows no sign of abating.
Two airlines say they have successfully carried out test flights.
The Netherlands' KLM said one of its planes, a Boeing 737, had reached its maximum operating altitude of about 13km in the skies over the Netherlands, and there had been no problems during the flight.
The aircraft and its engines were being inspected for possible damage. After the results of that technical inspection the airline hopes to get permission from the aviation authorities to start up operations again.
Germany's Lufthansa said it had flown several planes to Frankfurt from Munich.
"All airplanes have been inspected on arrival in Frankfurt but there was no damage to the cockpit windows or fuselage and no impact on the engines," a spokesman said.

THAI adds flights to Rome and Madrid to facilitate stranded passengers

(April 18, 2010) Thai Airways International Public Company Limited will increase flights between Thailand and Europe via Rome and via Madrid to facilitate stranded passengers.

Mr Piyasvasti Amranand, THAI President, said that due to the continued airspace closure by the EUROCONTROL, the airline had to cancel an average of 22 outbound and inbound flights between Thailand and European destinations. THAI estimates there are 6,000 stranded passengers per day, and expects a loss of approximately 100 million Baht per day.

THAI normally operates to 13 destinations in Europe. Currently, four destinations still open for operation are Rome, Madrid, Moscow and Athens. THAI is unable to provide concrete information on airports re-opening and closing as this is solely dependent on the decision of EUROCONTROL. However, THAI will closely monitor the situation and update passengers accordingly.

THAI is implementing a contingency plan for the period of 19 – 29 April 2010. In order to facilitate stranded passengers’ travel to and from Europe, THAI is adding temporary flights to and from Rome and Madrid during 19-29 April 2010. Flights to Moscow and Athens continue to operate on normal schedule as follows:

Destinations Current Flight Additional Flight Total Flight

Rome 4 flights per week 7 flights per week 11 flights per week

(Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun) (Daily Flight)

Effective 19 April 2010

Madrid 3 flights per week 4 flights per week 7 flights per week

(Tue/Thu/Sat) (Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun)

Effective 22 April 2010

Moscow 3 flights per week - 3 flights per week

(Wed/Fri/Sun)

Athens 3 flights per week - 3 flights per week

(Mon/Thu/Sat)

Passengers who wish to travel to and from European countries will be able to travel via these four destinations. Customers holding THAI ticket who wish to take these alternate routes from Europe to Thailand, and vice versa, may reroute and rebook at local town and airport offices worldwide. Extra flights will be offered on a first come first served basis. THAI will waive service fees for rerouting and rebooking on these routes.

Possiamo metterci comodi....

Finnish fighter jets damaged by volcanic cloud

AFP

Published: Friday, April 16, 2010
HELSINKI - Finnish fighter jets which flew through the volcanic dust covering much of Europe suffered damage and the air force warned Friday the cloud could have a significant impact on planes.

The air force F-18 Hornet jets were on training flights in northern Finland on Thursday morning, when airspace was still open, and the engines were later found to contain fine, volcanic ash dust.

"Based on the pictures, it was discovered that even short flights in ash dust may cause significant damage to an airplane's engine," the Finnish Defence Forces said in a statement.

Images taken inside one Hornet engine with a fibroscope camera indicated that the heat of the engine - around 1,000 degrees Celcius - had melted the ash inside the engine, blocking ventilation channels. "Blockages of ventilation channels caused by melting ash lead engine components to overheat and material to weaken," it said, adding this could fracture rotating engine parts. In the worst case, the weakening of component materials could cause "parts to detach and the engine to be destroyed," it said.

The Hornets exposed to the dust from the eruption of a volcano in Iceland would be checked thoroughly, with "at least some" of the engines detached and sent for further studies and repair.

The air force would keep a Hawk combat aircraft equipped with a tank to take atmospheric samples on standby to assist civilian authorities as necessary, it said, adding that operative military flights would continue normally. Samples taken by the plane, which collects particle samples in a filter in the tank, could be used to analyze how much ash dust was in the air.

A huge cloud of volcanic ash from Iceland has spread over large part of Europe, shutting airports and forcing the cancellation of thousands of flights. Finland's airports were shut Thursday at midnight and flights are not due to resume until Saturday afternoon at earliest.

KLM 737 test flight indicates no volcanic ash risk
By David Kaminski-Morrow

Dutch carrier KLM has thrown doubt on the risk to aircraft from European volcanic ash after finding no technical problems during a test flight conducted with a Boeing 737-800.

The airline expects to receive final results today from an inspection of the aircraft.

KLM conducted the flight in Dutch airspace, from 19:45 to 21:00 yesterday, after securing Dutch Government permission.

"No problems were encountered during the flight," says the airline. The 737 climbed to an altitude of 41,000ft during the test.

Core European airspace has been largely closed since 15 April following the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in southwest Iceland and the dispersion of ash towards the European mainland.

"At first glance there is no reason to suspect that anything is amiss," says KLM chief Peter Hartman, who participated in the flight as an observer along with operations head Ype de Haan.

Initial technical checks in a hangar after the landing have also revealed no problems, although KLM says it will obtain final results today.

If these results confirm its expectations, the airline plans to return seven of its aircraft from Dusseldorf to Amsterdam Schiphol.

KLM is awaiting a Dutch transport ministry verdict on whether flight operations can be restored.

The carrier's test flight is likely to stir controversy over the extent of the risk to aircraft and the decision to shut airspace over the northern two-thirds of the European continent.

"We hope to receive permission as soon as possibleto start up our operation and to transport our passengers to their destinations," says Hartman.

KLM was the operator of a Boeing 747-400 which suffered multiple engine failure after encountering an ash plume from Alaska's Mount Redoubt volcano during a service to Tokyo in 1989.
