Montenegro Airlines eyes partnership with Etihad

Montenegro Airlines, which has been shortlisted for privatisation this year, is eyeing closer ties with Etihad Airways and has recently launched fresh talks with the Emirati carrier. The news comes almost a year after Montenegro’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Igor Lukšić, said Etihad was considering acquiring a stake in the country’s national airline. According to the state-owned “Pobjeda” newspaper, the two carriers are now looking to conclude a codeshare partnership agreement and boost cooperation, with talks recently held in Abu Dhabi. The involvement of Serbia’s Deputy President for Cooperation with the UAE, Mladjan Dinkić, who is heading the talks between the two parties has generated significant attention. Mr. Dinkić, who is also Serbia’s former Finance Minister, played an important role in Etihad’s takeover of Jat Airways, which was subsequently relaunched as Air Serbia.

Last year, Mr. Lukšić and Etihad Airways’ CEO, James Hogan, met in Abu Dhabi after which the minister said the Emirati carrier would complete a screening process of the Montenegrin airline. “We have made a definite agreement for a team from Etihad Airways to visit Montenegro in order to define models of cooperation and partnership between Etihad Airways and Montenegro Airlines”, Mr. Lukšić said at the time. Montenegro Airlines has been hit by strong competition over the past year on its two main markets – Serbia and Russia - which accounted for 62.8% of all passengers it carried last year. The airline handled some 557.000 travellers in 2014, down 5.3% on the year before and decreased its flight operations by 20%. However, Montenegro Airlines says it is holding up against its competitors, “Strong competition over the past two years hasn’t managed to jeopardize Montenegro Airlines’ position as one of the most punctual airlines in the region”, the carrier said in a statement on Tuesday.

Earlier this month, the Montenegrin Privatisation and Capital Investment Council announced plans to privatise Montenegro Airlines this year. The Ministry for Transport and Maritime Affairs has offered to sell a minority stake in the airline, which is to be offered to potential investors through an international tender. Both attempts to privatise the carrier in the past have failed, though Etihad has previously expressed interest to invest in Montenegro Airlines. During the 2011 privatisation attempt, in which the government was looking to sell a 30% stake, Etihad purchased tender documentation. However, it failed to place a bid later on. Etihad Airways currently counts eight equity alliance partners in which it holds ownership stakes, with its takeover of Darwin Airline, rebranded as Etihad Regional, still to be approved by Swiss authorities.

Profits plateau as Air Seychelles goes for growth

Air Seychelles recorded a net profit of $3.2 million for 2014, up marginally from 2013’s figure of $3 million. Revenue rose 20% to $106.9 million, up from $88.7 million in the previous year.
The slowing of profit growth was a result of increased expenditure in growing the route network. New services to Paris, Mumbai, Dar-es-Salaam and Antananarivo were launched in 2014, but the last three, in particular, got underway too late to have an appreciable effect on profit figures.
The Paris service, launched mid-year, is understood to be doing well, but new routes typically take 12-18 months to realize their potential.
During 2014, ASKs increased by 27% following the delivery of an Airbus A320, and two DHC-6-400 Twin Otters, to complement the Airbus A330-200, which flies long-haul routes to Paris and Hong Kong via Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg.
Cargo tonnage for 2014 rose strongly 34% to 7,311 tonnes.
“The continued strengthening of the business is very pleasing and is a result of an effective management team, committed workforce, and a strong and trusted partnership with Etihad Airways,” said Joël Morgan, Seychelles Minister for Foreign Affairs and Transport and Air Seychelles chairman.
Etihad acquired a 40% stake in Air Seychelles in 2012. Its involvement was followed by the implementation of a turnaround plan to reverse previous losses.
“With further significant financial support from its shareholders, we hope Air Seychelles can announce a further expansion of its network in its key markets as well as new markets in 2015, thereby increasing its economic contribution to Seychelles,” Morgan added.
“Our increased profit figure is the result of higher revenue, greater productivity and an ongoing focus on costs,” CEO Manoj Papa commented, adding that the competitive environment remained “challenging.”
“Our strategy is to use Seychelles’ unique position in the Indian Ocean to capture the strong travel flows between East Africa, the Western Indian Ocean, the UAE [United Arab Emirates] and the Indian subcontinent. The strong growth in passenger numbers from Mumbai to other destinations on our network shows this approach is working.”
During the year, Air Seychelles signed two new codeshare agreements—with Alitalia to Rome and Venice, and Hong Kong Airlines to Bangkok. Atwonline

South African Airways potrebbe considerare l'ingresso in Etihad Partners

South African Airways (SA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) acting Chief Executive Officer Nico Bezuidenhout has told the Gulf News that his carrier would join Etihad Airways' airline group 'Etihad Airways Partners' so long as there is “no major conflict” with its existing partners.

“If it does not spoil the party on one of our other arrangements, we would cooperate,” Bezuidenhout said during the inaugural of SAA's new Johannesburg O.R. Tambo-Abu Dhabi Int'l service last week. The flight is a code-share with Etihad.

Launched in October 2014, Etihad Airways Partners offers member airlines improved networks and schedules as well as enhanced frequent flyer benefits. It also offers access to economies of scale and operational synergies such as Centres of Excellence, shared sales teams in certain destinations, joint procurement of services and supplies, and shared pilot and cabin crew training at the Etihad Airways facilities in Abu Dhabi.

Though members are currently limited to Etihad and its affiliates Air Berlin (AB, Berlin Tegel), Air Serbia (JU, Belgrade), Air Seychelles (HM, Mahé), Jet Airways (9W, Mumbai Int'l), and Darwin Airline (F7, Lugano), membership is open to any airline even if it is part of an existing alliance.

For its part, the South African national carrier recently completed its 90-Day Action Plan which sought to cut ZAR1.25 billion (USD107.3 million) in expenditure from its current budget ahead of the full on implementation of its Long-Term Turnaround Strategy. The 90-Day Action Plan targetted six main areas including: immediately addressing the airline’s liquidity position; on-going solvency and medium-term funding requirements; investigating options for future funding of the business; focusing on governance defects and remedies; legal and high-level governance; reorganising and optimising assets; and improving communication.

Though media houses have looked to the Emirati carrier as a possible equity partner for South African Airways, SAA's track record of heavy annual losses and poor governance coupled with existing legislation that caps foreign ownership in local airlines at 25% will likely dissuade any immediate investment in the airline.

SAA is facing increasing pressure on all fronts with Etihad, Emirates (EK, Dubai Int'l), Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l), and Turkish Airlines (TK, Istanbul Atatürk) squeezing its longhaul markets while budget start-ups FlySafair (FA, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) and SkyWise (S8, Johannesburg O.R. Tambo) have begun their onslaught on the domestic front.

BERLIN: The German transport ministry said a recent deal that permits some Air Berlin and Etihad code share flights, even though they are not covered by a bilateral traffic agreement, should remain an exception.

Germany last month approved Air Berlin's summer flight schedule, including the code shares that allow Etihad to sell tickets for Air Berlin-operated flights such as between Berlin and Abu Dhabi and Stuttgart and Abu Dhabi. Under a bilateral traffic agreement, carriers from the United Arab Emirates may fly to only four airports in Germany - Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg and Duesseldorf.

"There is a letter that has been sent to the UAE in which we said an exception was made for this year's winter and summer flight plan and that this should remain an exception," a spokesman for the transport ministry said on Friday during a government press conference.

The letter said further action should be discussed in consultation with both sides, the spokesman said, adding there had been no reaction to the letter and no date set for talks.

The codeshare agreements with Etihad, which owns 29 percent of Air Berlin, gives Germany's second-biggest airline access to passengers it needs to fight its way back to operating profit.

Air Serbia delivers strong first quarter results with continued growth in passengers and cargo

  • Revenue increases by 44 per cent from EUR 27 million to EUR 39 million
  • Total passenger numbers grow by 26 per cent from 359,000 to 453,000
  • Available Seat Kilometres up by 15 per cent to 795 million
  • Air Serbia Cargo achieves 61 per cent growth, carrying a total of 875 tonnes
  • On-time performance of 86 per cent

Air Serbia, the national airline of the Republic of Serbia, today reported continued improvement in its financial performance with revenues of EUR 39 million for the first quarter of 2015, an increase of 44 per cent over the same period in 2014.

A total of 453,000 passengers travelled with Air Serbia during the first quarter of 2015, over 26 per cent higher than the 359,000 passengers in the same period last year, while the airline's passenger carrying capacity, measured in Available Seat Kilometres (ASK), rose by 15 per cent year-on-year to 795 million.

On the cargo front, Air Serbia Cargo achieved 61 per cent growth over 2014, carrying 875 tonnes of freight in the first quarter.

Dane Kondić, Chief Executive Officer of Air Serbia, said: "We have continued to reap the benefits of our growth, which is fuelled by the development of our network and the expansion of codeshare partnerships. Our results continue to demonstrate the effectiveness of our business strategy. This is a great sign for our long-term success. As in 2014, we will continue to focus on maintaining financial discipline and control over costs. Nevertheless, this year we are committed to investing in what we firmly believe are key areas that will underpin our future success - further development of our workforce and enhancing the guest experience by innovating our products and services".

Air Serbia continues to create jobs, thereby making a significant contribution to the local economy. A single cabin crew recruitment day, held in February 2015, attracted nearly 1,700 candidates - the highest in the history of the airline, indicating that Air Serbia has become an employer of choice among young Serbian nationals. A subsequent recruitment drive was held for new cabin crew members and a number of key senior management positions.
Currently, over 2,300 employees work at Air Serbia, including its subsidiaries, Air Serbia Catering and Air Serbia Ground Services. The sustained growth of Air Serbia will continue to create a significant number of new jobs for Serbian nationals.

In the first quarter of 2015, Air Serbia significantly expanded its network through codeshare agreements with Adria Airways, Aeroflot, airberlin, Air France, Alitalia, Bulgaria Air, Etihad Airways, Etihad Regional (operated by Darwin Airline), KLM and Tarom. Air Serbia now serves 29 additional global points, including key destinations in the Far East, such as Seoul, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, as well as four cities in Australia.

During the first three months of 2015, Air Serbia also forged a number of strategic partnerships that significantly strengthened its global commercial presence. This included an agreement with Abacus International, the leading Global Distribution System in the Asia-Pacific region, which enables travel agents at more than 20,000 locations to gain access to Air Serbia's network of routes, partner connections and fares. In addition, Air Serbia Cargo established closer links with Global Logistics Network (GLN), enabling the carrier to extend its services to a greater customer base worldwide, while offering more choice and enhanced access to global transport solutions.

Air Serbia received some important international acknowledgements for various aspects of its operations in 2015. The internationally-regarded website AirlineRatings.com recognised Air Serbia with the highest combined airline ratings in the region. The website gave Air Serbia a six-star safety ranking, placing it among the safest airlines in the region, while it also received a five-star product rating, the highest in the region, upgrading its earlier status from a "Regional Carrier" to a "Full Service Carrier" for the first time. Furthermore, in January, the influential French magazine Marie France presented a list of top ten cabin crew uniforms, ranking Air Serbia's as second-placed worldwide.

"Customers are at the centre of our business and I extend our appreciation for their loyal support. During this year, we will continue to focus on all aspects our guests' travel experience by innovating our products and services, providing even more choice, convenience and enjoyment. We are confident that this approach will drive our continued success," Mr Kondić added.
