Il volo arriverà "regolarmente" a Newark. Evidentemente non ha necessità di dichiarare emergenza in virtù la presenza a bordo di due primi ufficiali (uno dei quali come relief pilot). Per le linee aeree americane è piuttosto normale avere equipaggi di tre persone sull'Atlantico, anche per una rotta come la BRU-EWR di 3680 statute miles.

Beh, quello che non capisco é che prima di morire stó poveretto sará stato male... perché non sono atterrati in emergenza?

NEWARK (WABC) -- The captain on a Continental Airlines flight died as the plane headed from Belgium to Newark Airport.
Authorities say the death occurred as Flight 61 traveled from Brussels to Newark Thursday morning. The pilot reportedly died in his seat.

There are two first officers on the aircraft, and they are flying the plane. Passengers were not immediately notified.
The flight crew declared an emergency, and the plane will get special treatment from the Newark Airport tower upon arrival.
The Boeing 777 is expected to arrive at Newark Airport at noon.
Medical workers will take custody of the captain's body upon arrival.
The cause of the captain's death will be determined by a medical examiner.
Continental released the following statement:
"The captain of Continental flight 61, which was en route from Brussels to Newark, died in flight, apparently of natural causes. The crew on this flight included an additional relief pilot who took the place of the deceased pilot. The flight continued safely with two pilots at the controls.
The company has been in touch with his family and we extend our deepest sympathies. The deceased pilot was 61 years old, Newark-based and had 21 years of service with Continental.
The Boeing 777 carried 247 passengers and is scheduled to land at Newark on time at noon EDT."

Secondo me erano sull'Atlantico. L'aereo è in avvicinamento a Newark adesso. La notizia è arrivata alla stampa dalla FAA. Non credo che la FAA l'abbia ricevuta in tempo reale, e prima di trasmetterla alla stampa l'avrà verificata con attenzione. Probabilmente il problema si è verificato alcune ore fa.
Si può morire anche all' istante, in una frazione di secondo ed è più comune di quanto non si pensi.
