Bombardier confirmed today that its first CSeries aircraft (FTV1) has commenced a series of low-speed taxi runs, having recently completed thrust reverser runs and stationary high-powered engine runs. FTV1 also completed the “aircraft in the loop” testing or ACIL testing last week, whereby FTV1 was flown on the ground in a simulated flight environment to ensure it behaved in the same manner as “Aircraft 0”.

“We checked off yet another great series of accomplishments on the first CSeries aircraft,” said Robert Dewar, Vice President and General Manager, CSeries Program, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft. “It was thrilling to see FTV1 move under its own power on the tarmac during the low-speed taxi runs this week. Additionally, our technical teams are very pleased with the results of the ACIL test data which is comparing extremely well to Aircraft 0/CIASTA – further validating the systems integration. I’m also pleased to share that FTV1 completed the high-powered engine runs while the aircraft was stationary. When full thrust was applied, we were able to run full vibration checks – but most telling, the flight test team was extremely impressed with how quiet the engines were at full power.”

Following the recent “shakedown” of the aircraft (check of the airframe along with all systems and flight controls), teams progressively started to add more power to the engines as FTV1 commenced low-speed taxi runs and other accompanying tests. FTV1 is slated to enter the paint shop soon as it readies to take to the skies for the first time in the coming weeks!

MONTREAL - Bombardier is unwilling to cede ground to Embraer despite an analyst's forecast that the Brazilian rival is positioned to further grow its share of the regional jet market in the coming years.

"We have confidence in our products," said Marianella Delabarrera, a spokeswoman for the plane- and train-maker on Monday.

"The way we see it, the CRJ is considered the benchmark in regional jet efficiency in the category," she said, pointing to lower fuel burn, emissions, noise levels and maintenance costs.

Delabarrera said the Montreal-based manufacturer always anticipated a competitive response to its aircraft and is pursuing product enhancements to attract additional sales. Bombardier is making strides in new markets such as Africa and Indonesia, along with Russia, where it has a large base of used planes in operation, she added.

Embraer has won the majority of recent U.S. regional jet orders — US$4.9 billion since late 2012, compared with just US$1.9 billion for Bombardier. But Bombardier insists it will win some of the remaining contracts that are in play.

Derek Spronck, an associate transportation analyst at RBC Capital Markets, anticipates that Embraer's market share between 2013 and 2015 will increase to 63 per cent from the aggregate 54 per cent it achieved between 2001 and 2012.

"Whether by thoughtful decision-making or by second-mover advantage, Embraer has effectively positioned its product lineup against a competitive, landscape," he wrote in a report issued Monday.

Embraer's backlog now is at a point where Spronck anticipates a 17 per cent ramp up in deliveries in 2014, adding US$425 million in extra revenue.

Bombardier (TSX:BBD.B) has delivered nearly 1,700 aircraft and has 91 planes in its backlog as of June 30, or 55 months of production. The company used to dominate the regional jet market but has seen its leadership dwindle since Embraer introduced its E-Jet family in 2003.

Embraer, the world's fourth-largest aircraft manufacturer behind Bombardier, delivered 76 per cent of the world's regional jets last year, up from 29 per cent in 2003.

While the two rivals have historically accounted for about 95 per cent of the regional jet market, they are expected to face competition in the coming years from new arrivals, including Mitsubishi, Russia's Sukhoi and Comac of China. All have faced development challenges and delays.

Spronck said Bombardier's deliveries of planes in the 30- to 120-seat segment should fall to 31 per cent share of the market over the next three years from 45 per cent achieved over the past 12 years.

Bombardier's CRJ jets are lighter and have a few more seats than the E-Jets, but have a shorter range, less efficient aerodynamics and a smaller cabin.

Embraer's new E2 jets are undergoing a US$1.7-billion facelift that will improve operating efficiency, in part by adding the Pratt & Whitney geared turbofan engine that will power Bombardier's CSeries.

Its largest aircraft, E195, will add 12 seats and be able to fly 132 passengers (118 in a dual-class configuration) and will challenge the smaller CSeries aircraft, which is $16 million more expensive at US$62 million but has a much longer range. The first CSeries test plane has been painted and is awaiting a flight permit before its maiden flight.

Spronck said Embraer is improving the "value proposition" against its rival's current line-up of aircraft.

"We believe Bombardier will need either to launch a clean-sheet regional jet offering in the coming years or (and more likely) concede market share in the regional jet market," wrote Spronck.

Commercial aviation accounted for 61 per cent of Embraer's revenues last year, followed by 21 per cent for business aircraft and 17 per cent for defence products.

On the Toronto Stock Exchange, Bombardier's shares were down five cents at $4.66 on Monday.

"The way we see it, the CRJ is considered the benchmark in regional jet efficiency in the category," she said, pointing to lower fuel burn, emissions, noise levels and maintenance costs.

Come no!!

Bombardier () has 91 planes in its backlog as of June 30, or 55 months of production.

Ilyushin Finance Co. to Lease Five CS300 to Vim Airlines
Excitement about Bombardier’s product line continued today at the MAKS 2013 Air Show, when Ilyushin Finance Co. (IFC) announced that it will lease five Bombardier CS300 airliners to Vim Airlines. Earlier this year, IFC finalized a purchase agreement with Bombardier covering the acquisition of 32 CS300 aircraft and options for an additional 10. Vim Airlines, which is based at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport, is IFC’s first lessee for CS300 airliners.

Alexander Kochnev, Director General of Vim Airlines and Alexander Rubtsov of IFC, joined Rod Sheridan, Bombardier Commercial Aircraft’s Vice President, Sales and Asset Management during a signing ceremony to celebrate the lease agreement. The ceremony was hosted at Bombardier’s booth at the airshow.

During the event, Mr. Kochnev expressed his delight in arranging the acquisition of CSeries aircraft, and stated that he was impressed with Bombardier’s meticulous attention to detail in the construction of the “very spacious” aircraft cabin and cockpit demonstrator that is on display at the air show.

Bombardier applies for CSeries flight test permit
Bombardier has submitted an application for the CSeries flight test permit to Transport Canada, as it moves a step closer to the aircraft's first flight.
The Canadian regulator confirms today that it has received the airframer's application and says that it is "reviewing the information and documentation".
The flight test permit is the final requirement before flight testing can begin, something that Bombardier has said would begin in the "coming weeks" since July.
The crew for the first flight will include chief pilot Chuck Ellis, first officer Andy Litavniks and flight test engineer Andreas Hartono.
The CS100, known as FTV-1, rolled out of the paint shop at Mirabel airport on 22 August, after low speed taxi tests began six days earlier.

UTair-Ukraine and IFC signed a letter of intent for delivery of 5 Bombardier CS300 aircraft
UTair-Ukraine and Ilyushin Finance & Co. (IFC) signed a letter of intent for delivery of 5 Bombardier CS-300 aircraft under an operational lease agreement on August 29th 2013 at MAKS-2013 airshow. The jets will be delivered to the carrier in 2014-2015.

The parties agreed to coordinate all the details related to the deal and sign the contract within 3 months.
