Qatar Airways Cargo to shift Euro hub to Luxembourg
Qatar Airways (QR, Doha Hamad Int'l) is planning to shift its regional European cargo hub in Liège, Belgium, to Luxembourg cargoforwarder has reported.
According to the site, the Qataris are seeking to make use of the 5th Freedom traffic rights allocated to them under a 2011 Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with Luxembourg.
Qatar Airways Cargo reportedly plans to deploy their B777-Fs on routes that mirror those of local operator Cargolux (CV, Luxembourg) which was, until early 2013, 35% owned by Qatar Airways.
The Qatari operator's Chief Cargo Officer, Ulrich Ogiermann, who is also an ex-CEO of Cargolux, has confirmed a partial transition from Belgium to Luxembourg adding that the airport's good quality infrastructure will more than make up for its lack of end-market opportunities.
Local Luxembourg unions have not, however, shared Ogiermann's enthusiasm for a homecoming given allegations that Qatar Airways Cargo has been undercutting other operators by as much as 75%.
