Spirit Airlines Threatened by Pilot Strike

It now appears that Spirit Airlines could possibly be looking at a pilot strike. According to sources, the strike would start on June 12th if a new contract is not made with the airline. The declaration was made on Wednesday after the pilots’ union turned down binding arbitration to settle the dispute. This set into motion a 30-day countdown to the strike.
The head of the union, Sean Creed, said that the group hoped the deadline would force management to settle. However, he did say that people should make no mistake. Without a new contract on June 12th the pilots of Spirit Airlines will go on strike.
Spirit Airlines said that it was still working on negotiations. The company also warned that it could start notifying employees of possible job reductions. The National Medication board released Spirit Airlines and the Air Line Pilots Association from negotiations. This is what started the 30-day cooling off period. After this time, the union is allowed to strike, or the company can lock out workers.
Despite the possible strike, the airline said that it plans to continue operating as normal. Spirit Airlines also said in a statement that it wants a contract that effectively ensures the long term stability and growth of the company. They also want to offer a rewarding and stable career for their pilots and co-workers that do such a great job for the company.
The pilots union said that management had declined to give its members contract terms similar to those at other low cost airlines. Both sides have been in negotiations for more than three years.
