Stansted Airport 'not for sale'
By Sinead Holland
BAA bosses have told Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary that Stansted Airport is not for sale!
The controversial chief executive of the Irish budget carrier had been quoted as ready to make a £2billion take-over bid for the Uttlesford hub in last Friday's Daily Telegraph although later reports indicated his statement was probably tongue in cheek.
In the wake of his comments, shares in Spanish-owned Ferrovial, which heads the consortium behind BAA rose by as much as seven per cent, but Mr O'Leary was subsequently quoted in the Irish lndependent confirming Ryanair was not looking to became the owner of any airport.
Ryanair's spokeswoman has so far not commented officially on the reports.
However this week the message from BAA was clear: "While we are flattered that Michael O'Leary recognises the long-term value of Stansted, it is not for sale."
The Dublin-based businessman latest publicity coup capitalised on speculation that the Competition Commission, currently investigating BAA's "monopoly" of South East airports, would force the operator to sell one of its assets.
The Competition Commission is expected to announce its findings later this summer.
