KLM expands European offering from Amsterdam

KLM commenced services to Genoa from Amsterdam on 22 April, with the former airport celebrating the arrival of the SkyTeam member with a ribbon cutting ceremony. In charge of proceedings was: Marco Arato, President of Genoa Airport; Pieter Elbers, CEO of KLM; and Joep Wijnands, Netherlands Ambassador to Italy. Later that day, the airport hosted a press conference where a gift exchange took place between Arato and Elbers. After the conference, a gala dinner was held with speeches made by Giovanni Toti, President of Liguria Region, as well as Arato, Wijnands and Elbers. Other VIPs that attended the event included Gianni Berrino, Tourism Councillor of Liguria Region; Norbert Stiekema, EVP Sales & Marketing of Costa Cruises; Stefano Bernini, Deputy Mayor of Genoa; and Neil Palomba, President of Costa Cruises.
KLM has expanded its European offering from its Amsterdam (AMS) hub by adding connections to airports in Italy and Spain. Starting on 22 April, the SkyTeam member launched a daily connection to Genoa (GOA), a 927-kilometre route which will be operated by the airline’s fleet of 100-seat E190s. Traffic on the sector will be boosted thanks to Costa Cruises. The company will use the route as a ferry service for its Dutch, Belgian and North European guests that will holiday on the company’s Costa Diadema and the Costa Fascinosa ships which depart from Savona, a port 40-kilometres from Genoa Airport each Saturday. “We are delighted to be able to work together with such an excellent partner like KLM. We are focusing on these new flights because they represent an excellent opportunity for us, allowing our Dutch guests to get to our ships with a convenient and high-quality service. Not only Dutch passengers but even Belgian and North European travellers can fly on this route thanks to the connections to other airports which are available from Amsterdam,” commented Norbert Stiekema, EVP Sales & Marketing, Costa Cruises. The second launch by KLM was to Valencia (VLC) on 23 April. The 1,279-kilometre city pair with Amsterdam will operate twice-weekly (Saturdays and Sundays) initially, with flights increasing to daily from 16 May according to OAG Schedules Analyser data. Although services to Genoa face no direct competition, flights to Valencia will compete with Transavia and Vueling, which combined offer 13 weekly services.
