Spero sempre in Malaysia :)

SkyTeam members could top 20 by 2012: chairman
By Graham Dunn

SkyTeam expects its recent recruitment drive to continue into next year and believes the alliance could reach 20 or more members come 2012.

The alliance marked its 10th anniversary this year and its first full year with a central management organisation, by adding two new members - Tarom and Vietnam Airlines - and paving the way for four more to join. This will take its membership to 16.

"We have been speeding up [recruitment] in the past two years. It was one of the goals that was set," said SkyTeam managing director Marie-Josesph Male, speaking during a press conference in Paris following the SkyTeam governors' last meeting of the year.

Asia has been at the heart of much of this year's activity. China Eastern, its merger partner Shanghai Airlines - which quit Star Alliance at the end of October - and Taiwan's China Airlines all chose SkyTeam this year and are on course to join next year.

On top of this strong position in China, SkyTeam is keen to boost its presence in southeast Asia, where Garuda Indonesia is a candidate, but SkyTeam chairman Leo van Wijk identifies India and Latin America as its priorities.

"The key areas where we don't have that [strong network] presence are India - which is a huge market and fast growing - and Latin America. These are the two most important regions [to find more partners]," he says.

SkyTeam, which already has Aeromexico in Central America, is close to finalising moves to bring in Aerolineas Argentinas to bolster its presence in Latin America. The signing of a formal deal, delayed from late last month following the sudden death of former Argentine president Nestor Kirchner, is expected shortly.

"Aerolineas Argentinas has been through a very turbulent period in the past. But it has restructured and it is renewing its fleet," says Male.

Van Wijk says there is no single solution for Latin America given that the market, despite some recent consolidation moves, is still fragmented. "Brazil is the big market and that is a fast-growing market as well. There are other candidates, but they are relatively small and there is no one carrier in Latin America that covers all the region," he says. "So we will look at multiple options. But Brazil is key."

In India Jet Airways is a candidate - Air India and Kingfisher are already bound for Star and Oneworld respectively - and it has just sealed a codeshare deal with SkyTeam partner Alitalia.

Long-stalled moves for Middle East Airlines to join appear to have picked up pace after the breaking of an impasse over retaining its frequent-flyer programme.

"We have a number of prospects in the pipeline. With all of these carriers we are in discussions to see if an agreement can be reached, and there are certainly more carriers that have expressed an interest," says van Wijk. "We expect [come] 2012 we will have a membership of 20-plus.

Secondo me papabili, oltre a quelle ufficializzate e/o scontate, Jet Airways, Malaysia, Saudi.

Garuda to ink SkyTeam agreement next week

By Siva Govindasamy

Garuda Indonesia will hold a ceremony on Tuesday to formally begin the process of becoming a member of the SkyTeam alliance.

The process is likely to take about a year, with Indonesia's flag carrier likely to become a full-fledged member of the alliance around early 2012.

Garuda follows similar recent agreements by Shanghai-based China Eastern Airlines and Taiwan's China Airlines, in a clear signal that SkyTeam has placed Asia at the forefront of its expansion.

Guangzhou-based China Southern Airlines and Vietnam Airlines are already members, while SkyTeam has also held talks with India's Jet Airways.

Garuda Indonesia Joins SkyTeam

Alliance expands its reach in Southeast Asia and Australia

JAKARTA, Indonesia, Nov. 23, 2010 /PRNewswire/ -- Garuda Indonesia, the flag carrier of Indonesia, today signed an agreement to join the SkyTeam airline alliance in 2012. Garuda will expand SkyTeam's presence in Southeast Asia, adding 30 new destinations to the alliance network.

Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and a fast growing emerging market. SkyTeam is actively working to grow its presence in the region and Garuda is a welcome addition to the alliance. Garuda has a broad Indonesian and regional network and is able to offer additional coverage and improved connections to the Asia Pacific. Some of the 30 new destinations in the SkyTeam network are Surabaya in East Java, Medan in North Sumatra and Perth in Australia.

"Joining SkyTeam is a long-term development strategy for Garuda Indonesia, and for years we have been upgrading our service and actively forging cooperation with SkyTeam member airlines with this objective in mind," said Emirsyah Satar, President and CEO of Garuda. "As the first Indonesian airline to join this world-class alliance, our strategic target is to continuously strengthen profitability and boost international market competitiveness."

"The most fitting word to characterize 2010 for SkyTeam is growth. Welcoming a member that covers a considerable part of Southeast Asia definitely illustrates our expansion," said SkyTeam Chairman Leo van Wijk. "Indonesia has great cultural and historical wealth, is rich in a range of natural resources and has seen impressive economic developments. Garuda's financial and operational restructuring has proven very successful and I am convinced that this will help position the airline as a major player in the region."

Garuda Indonesia was named the 'World's Most Improved Airline' at the Skytrax 2010 World Airline Awards.

"Jakarta will serve as an alternate gateway to and from Asia," said SkyTeam Managing Director Mr. Marie-Joseph Male. "Garuda's consideration to expand its intercontinental network to Frankfurt, Paris, London and Rome will make the airline an increasingly attractive option for business and leisure travelers."

Garuda already cooperates extensively with Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines, China Southern and China Airlines, and will establish additional codeshare agreements with other SkyTeam partners. The joining process leading to full entry into SkyTeam is expected to be completed by 2012.

Garuda is the fifth Asian-based airline this year to join or announce its intention to join SkyTeam. Vietnam Airlines joined the alliance in June while China Airlines, China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines are each slated to join by 2012.

Saudi Arabian Airlines on path to Sky Team alliance
Posted on 2 December 2010 in Air Transport

Saudi Arabia's national carrier has agreed a new codeshare with Air France- KLM which opens the door to the airline becoming part of the Sky Team global alliance.

Details of the new codeshare between Saudi Arabian Airlines and Air France- KLM were revealed earlier this week in Jeddah. It will take effect in January.

The move allows Air France to increase frequency to both Riyadh and Jeddah to offer a daily service to and from Paris. Both Saudi cities will be served three times weekly by an Air France A330 and by a Saudi Arabian Airlines A320 on the other four days.

Additionally services from Jeddah to Djibouti on Air France will be increased from one weekly flight to three weekly flights.

Saudi Arabian would by the first of the GCC airlines to gain a place in one of the world's three major alliances. Sources close to the airline say it could take two years for alliance membership to happen and the codeshare is only a first step.

Royal Jordanian airlines is already a member of the One World Alliance while EgyptAir iand Turkish Airlines are members of the Star Alliance.

The third alliance - Sky Team - has been keen to establish a member airline from the MENA region. Saudi Arabian with its links across the region would be seen as a great achievement by the alliance.

SkyTeam celebrated its 10th anniversary in June. - fIt started in 2000 with Aeroméxico, Air France, Delta Air Lines and Korean Air, but has grown steadily with the addition of Aeroflot, Alitalia, Air Europa, China Southern, Vietnamese, Czech Airlines, KLM and Kenya Airways.

The Sky Team network is said to serve over 460 million passengers on six continents.
