Iberia strike called off by unions

Iberia is planning to cut 4,500 jobs and reduce wages in an effort to stay competitive

Unions at the Spanish national airline Iberia have called off strike action scheduled for the run-up to Christmas.

Unions representing ground staff and cabin crew had planned six days of stoppages between 14 and 21 December in protest at planned job cuts.
The strikes have been cancelled to avoid disruption over the Christmas period, the unions said.

But they said no agreement with Iberia had been reached, leaving the door open for fresh action from January.

"We've decided to call off the strike because of the dates and because we don't want to harm passengers," a spokesman for the Union Sindical Obrera (USO) told Reuters.
"Until January, depending on whether disagreements persist, we will study new actions."

Iberia's management issued a statement welcoming the move as the "first step on the road to necessary dialogue".

Iberia is part of the loss-making International Airlines Group (IAG), along with British Airways.

In November IAG announced plans to cut 4,500 jobs at Iberia - about a quarter of the workforce.

It is also planning to cut the number of routes it operates and cut pay by between a quarter and a third in an effort to stem losses and remain competitive.
Previously unions said they were willing to compromise on wage cuts but not outright job losses.

IAG STATEMENT ON IBERIA TRANSFORMATION PLAN

International Airlines Group confirms that no agreement has been reached between Iberia and its trade unions over the airline's transformation plan proposals, published on November 9, 2012.

Iberia will, therefore, press ahead with the previously announced capacity reduction of 15 per cent for 2013.

IAG will also move forward on alternative plans to return Iberia to break-even, in terms of operating cash flow, by the second half of this year and restore Iberia to an acceptable level of profitability by 2015.

Willie Walsh, IAG chief executive, said: "We're disappointed that no agreement has been reached. Iberia is ready and willing to negotiate with the Trade Unions. We are determined and united to implement the necessary changes to secure the future survival and viability of Iberia".

Iberia Workers Plan Five-Day Strike

February 1, 2013

Workers at Spanish flag carrier Iberia will hold five straight days of strike action in the second half of February after failing to come to an agreement with management over job cuts, a union spokesman said on Friday.

"It will be at least five consecutive days... the date hasn't been set yet (but) it will be in the second half of February," the spokesman said.

Unions representing Iberia's ground and cabin crews rejected a fresh proposal by management on job and salary cuts on Thursday and said they planned to strike.

Willie Walsh, chief executive of loss-making Iberia's parent International Airlines Group - which also includes British Airways - said he was disappointed no agreement had been reached and the airline would press ahead with a planned rationalisation.

"Iberia is ready and willing to negotiate with the trade unions," he said. "We are determined... to implement the necessary changes to secure the future survival and viability of Iberia".

The company said in light of the failure to reach agreement, it would press ahead with its previously stated plan to reduce capacity by 15 percent this year, by focusing on profitable routes and reducing its fleet by 25 aircraft, rather than the 10 percent it had put forward in negotiations.

The group will also implement alternative plans to return Iberia to break-even, in terms of operating cash flow, by the second half of this year and restore it to an "acceptable" level of profitability by 2015.

Unions rejected IAG's offer to reduce job cuts at the Spanish airline by 30 percent to 3,147 and lower wage reductions.

Iberia, which has suffered periodic strikes since it announced the creation of budget arm Iberia express, has estimated it loses EUR€1 million (USD$1.4 million) for every day crew strike.
