Una notizia che ho trovato interessante. Il CAT Train che va dal centro di Vienna (Wien Mitte) a Schwechat offre una copertura in caso di ritardo del treno superiore a mezz'ora con conseguente perdita del volo. In tal caso (e se il treno è stato preso con il dovuto anticipo di almeno un'ora per i voli "regolari" e come altrimenti prescritto per i "sensibili") viene rimborsato il costo del nuovo biglietto ed anche di un eventuale pernottamento. Ottima iniziativa che evidentemente si può prendere agevolmente quando si sa che le infrastrutture funzionano ed i possibili costi aggiuntivi dovuti a ritardi saranno marginali rispetto all'incremento dei passeggeri.

Il CAT Train è quello che permette di fare il check in al terminal cittadino ed anche in anticipo (sera prima o mattino del giorno del volo).

Speriamo che qualcuno in Italia prenda ispirazione.

Tra l'altro la vecchia stazione Wien Mitte dove arriva il CAT è stata recentemente rifatta e adesso si arriva direttamente dentro un centro commerciale con tutti i servizi che possono servire al viaggiatore. Inoltre al contrario di altri check in con bag drop cittadini che sono normalmente riservati alle major, qui anche le low cost offrono questo servizio gratis, compresa l'ultima arrivata Level che ha aperto una base a Vienna.

Se venisse data la possibilità di fare il check-in/bag drop in stazione, Leonardo e Malpensa Express diventerebbero più appetibili agli occhi dei romani/milanesi (oltre che del turista esigente che attualmente sceglie il taxi).

Important information for airport travellers from September 2026​

From September 7, 2026 until the end of October 2027, a central section of the inner-city S-Bahn route between the stations Wien Praterstern and Wien Hauptbahnhof will be closed to all rail traffic due to extensive modernization works. However, there will still be a good public transport connection between the airport and the city center. An overview of the different options is provided here.

During the extended closure of a main section of the S-Bahn line through Vienna, trains will not stop at the stations Rennweg and the central hub Wien Mitte/Landstraße. This will results in changes to the usual train connections from Vienna Airport to the city center, in particular to the airport express train City Airport Train (CAT) and the S7 airport S-Bahn/REX 7 line.

City Airport Train (CAT) – transfer with premium replacement buses​

From September 7, 2026, to October 31, 2027, the City Airport Train will operate a replacement service using comfortable premium buses between Vienna Airport and the Wien Mitte/Landstraße station, running at more frequent intervals. Up to five buses per hour will run in each direction. This will provide a fast, direct connection between the airport and the city-center hub Wien Mitte/Landstraße (offering connections to subway lines U3 and U4).

Departure times of the CAT replacement buses:

From Vienna Airport to Wien Mitte:
Daily from 06:10 to 07:00 every 15 minutes
From 07:00 every 12 minutes (5 per hour) until 19:00.
From 19:00 every 15 minutes until midnight. Last bus departs the airport at 23:37.

From the City Air Terminal (Wien Mitte) to Vienna Airport:
Daily from 05:30 to 07:00, every 15 minutes from Wien Mitte
From 07:00 every 12 minutes (5 per hour) until 19:00.
From 19:00 every 15 minutes until midnight. Last bus departs Wien Mitte at 23:15.

Unfortunately, the CAT City Check-In at Wien Mitte/Landstraße station cannot be used during this period.

Purtroppo almeno fino alla fine del 2026 ci sono importanti lavori sull'autostrada per l'aeroporto (ed oltre, per Bratislava / Budapest). Le code sono frequenti poiché ci sono solo 2 corsie invece delle solite 3.

Le corse di certi tram e di tutte le linee di metropolitana saranno incrementate, perché il blocco interessa tutta la mobilità cittadina (si parla di 250.000 passeggeri al giorno). Ma per il turista i problemi sono soprattutto da e per l'aeroporto.

Pare che S7 / REX7 possa viaggiare fino a Sankt Marx, che è meglio di niente anche se non c'è intercambio con la metropolitana.
