BA asks staff to go unpaid
Published Date: 16 June 2009 - Edinburgh Evening News
BRITISH Airways has asked its 40,000 staff to work for nothing to save the troubled airline.
Chief executive WIllie Walsh is urging employees to follow his lead, and forgo their salaries for up to four weeks. He announced last week he would work for free during July, saving £61,000.
The appeal goes much further than previous requests for a pay freeze or unpaid leave.
A letter sent to all workers said: "Colleagues are being urged to help the airline's cash-saving drive by signing up for unpaid leave or unpaid work.
"People will be able to opt for blocks of unpaid leave or unpaid work, with salary deductions spread over three to six months."
Passengers face a summer of disruption as the airline fights with unions over cost cuts.
