An Alitalia Airbus A321-100, registration I-BIXA performing flight AZ-329 from Paris Charles de Gaulle (France) to Rome Fiumicino (Italy) with 131 passengers, was enroute about 30 minutes prior to estimated landing when a male passenger (48, Kazakhstan) attacked a flight attendant with a nail file and demanded the airplane should divert to Tripoli (Libya). Cabin crew and other passengers subdued the man however, a doctor on board put the attacker down providing a sedative and the airplane continued for a safe landing on Rome's runway 16L. The hijacker was taken into custody by Italian police, the attacked flight attendant received minor injuries at her neck and needed to be taken to the emergency room of the airport.
The attacker, said to be advisor to Kazakhstan's delegation at the UNESCO, was described as agitated and unbalanced then turning into lunatic. He stood up from his seat in the front of the aircraft, walked towards a flight attendant and when behind her pulled what appeared to be a small knife, clinched her from behind and threatened her throat with the knife. Cabin crew and other passengers acted immediately and subdued the man within a few moments, the attacker began to laugh.
