PASSENGERS on a Qantas jumbo have hailed their pilot as a hero after an emergency landing sparked by a gigantic hole in the plane's fuselage.
Investigators will examine maintenance records of the 17-year-old jumbo jet, which underwent a major refurbishment this year.
Aviation sources said engineers noted the Melbourne-bound plane had "a lot" of corrosion.

Qantas engineers last night said the 3m hole in the fuselage near the wing could have been caused by an exploding oxygen canister or fire extinguisher.
Investigators will also focus on what happened at Hong Kong airport before the flight departed for Melbourne.
A report by the Manila International Airport Authority quoting Melbourne pilot Captain John Francis Bartels said an initial investigation indicated there was an "explosive decompression".
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is sending four investigators to Manila to inspect the jet, which had been carrying 346 passengers and 19 crew. No one was hurt.
