Airbus Wins $4.7 Billion Order From Italy's Air One (Update1)
By Steve Rothwell
June 4 (Bloomberg) -- Airbus SAS, the world's biggest planemaker, said Italian carrier Air One SpA ordered 24 long- haul airliners with a list price of $4.7 billion as it establishes a route network beyond Europe.
Air One, Italy's second-largest airline, will buy 12 A330-200 planes and 12 A350-800s, Toulouse, France-based Airbus said today in an e-mailed statement. The Rome-based carrier also has an option to buy 12 more A350s and eight A330s.
The Italian company, which was thwarted in a bid for state-controlled rival Alitalia SpA in December, plans to establish long-distance services to add to a European network that includes London, Frankfurt, Vienna and Paris. The A330s will be delivered by 2012 and the A350s by 2018, Airbus said.
``The purchase is a key element in our company's growth strategy, with a view to achieving major developments in the intercontinental market over the next few years,'' Air One President Carlo Toto said in the statement.
Shares of Airbus owner European Aeronautic, Defence & Space Co. advanced 0.7 percent to 15.13 euros today. They've dropped 31 percent so far this year amid concern about delays to some of the company's planes. The A350 won't enter service until 2013 after customers rejected several early designs.
Air One, which is closely held, has already ordered 65 Airbus A320 short-haul aircraft, plus 25 options, with 16 of them delivered. The A330s ordered today will have 253 seats and the A350s 287, both in a two-class layout, Airbus said.
The Italian government last year chose Air France-KLM Group over Air One for exclusive talks to buy Alitalia. Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is seeking new bids after talks with Air France collapsed in April amid union opposition.
