Ryanair announces new route and frequencies from Budapest base
Ryanair said today that it will base a fifth airplane at its new Budapest base and announced details of a 32nd route as well as increased frequencies on a number of services from the Hungarian capital.
The airline said it had received record bookings since announcing the 31 routes last Friday and saying that it would base four new Boeing 737-800 series aircraft at Budapest Airport beginning 17 February. As a result, it said today that it will further expand its Budapest bse with a fifth based aircraft from 26 March.
In addition, it will add Budapest to Tampere to its existing 31 planned routes. And the airline said it is adding 42 more weekly flights, with additional frequencies on its routes from Budapest to Brussels, Eindhoven, Gothenburg, Madrid, Milan, Rome, Stockholm and Thessaloniki.
With the new route and extra frequencies, Ryanair now plans to carry 2.4 million passengers in its first year in Budapest.
“Ryanair will be investing more than US$350m in its new five aircraft Budapest base, and thanks to the exceptional support of Budapest Airport and the Hungarian Government, Ryanair’s base will open on time on Friday 17 February next,” said Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary.
“Ryanair’s new Budapest base will make up much of the traffic lost following Malev’s closure, but at fares which are less than one quarter of Malev’s fares and less than half the fares of the other high fare airline Wizzair.
“While loss making Wizzair continues to charge its passengers fares of €29, €39 and €49, Ryanair’s flights will start at €9.99. Ryanair also committed that its lowest fares will be at least 50pc lower than Wizzair and with at least double the availability of Wizzair’s promotional prices.”
