Air France strike: Half of flights to be scrapped Monday

Air France has said it will be forced to scrap more than half of its scheduled flights on Monday as a week-long pilots' strike begins over the French flag carrier’s plans to develop its low-cost subsidiary.

"We expect to be able to run 48 percent of our flights" with roughly 60 percent of pilots downing tools,Air France's director of operations Catherine Jude said on Sunday.
That forecast was slightly better than one given the day before by Chief Executive Frédéric Gagey, who said the airline would only be able to guarantee 40 percent of flights on Monday.
However, the transport situation could worsen on Tuesday and Wednesday as the pilots who worked on Monday would have to take their legally stipulated rest, unions warned.
The company said: "If the strike continues beyond September 15, the flight schedule will be modified as a result. The knock-on effects will be communicated to passengers the day before they are due to leave."
Air France urged "customers who have booked a flight between September 15 and 22 to delay their trip, change their ticket free of charge or claim a refund".
Pilots’ union SNLP has called for the week-long strike, which would be the longest at the company since 1998, over Air France’s plans to significantly expand its low-cost offerings to passengers through its Transavia budget airline.
Unions are unhappy in particular over contracts being offered to new Transavia pilots, which they say should come with the same pay and benefits as those afforded to Air France pilots, something the company has ruled out.
"This is about a point of principle. We're not even talking about a rise in wages," said SNPL head Jean-Louis Barber.
Air France has said negotiations with unions will continue "until this evening" in a last-ditch bid to avoid the strike, which it has estimated could result in losses of 10 to 15 million euros a day.
Seeking to take advantage of its rival's woes, low-cost airline easyJet on Saturday laid on 1,000 extra seats on flights from Paris to the southern cities of Toulouse and Nice.

Air France pilots' strike sparks travel chaos

French flag carrier Air France (Paris: FR0000031122 - news) scrapped half of its flights Monday as pilots began a strike against the company's plan to develop its low-cost subsidiary.
The company said 60 percent of its flights would be cancelled Tuesday with fears that the week-long protest -- the longest at the company since 1998 -- could spell travel mayhem across the country.
The strike sparked outrage among passengers stranded by the stoppage, with Jean-Marc Ragot arriving from Nairobi to Paris only to find his connecting flight to the eastern French city of Lyon cancelled.
"I can't return home, thanks for the joy," he complained at Charles de Gaulle airport.
"I've had it up to here with strikes in France. One always has a problem when one returns home," he said.
Air France said it had sent 65,000 text messages to passengers affected by the strike called by its main pilots' union SNPL and deployed some 7,000 extra workers to help stranded customers.
Munich-bound Carlos Gomez received such a message but turned up at Paris's main airport despite all flights to the German city being scrapped.
"I simply have to get to Munich today and I have to find a solution," he said.
At Paris's main Charles de Gaulle airport, 212 Air France flights were scheduled to be cancelled on Monday out of some 500.
But flights elsewhere were worse hit. Three out of four flights were cancelled in the southern port city of Marseille while 71 percent of Air France's services were cancelled in the eastern city of Lyon.
- 40% of flights kept Tuesday -
On Tuesday "40 percent of the flights will be maintained," Air France's director of operations Catherine Jude told a news conference.
But a pilots' union warned that eight out of 10 flights could be cancelled as the strike continued later into the week.
The company urged "customers who have booked a flight between September 15 and 22 to delay their trip, change their ticket free of charge or claim a refund."
Labour unions fear that expanding Air France's low-cost operation Transavia will lead to "jobs being outsourced" and "social dumping" with pilots being employed on local contracts.
"This is about a point of principle. We're not even talking about a rise in wages," said Jean-Louis Barber, the head of the SNPL union.
Air France boss Frederic Gagey put the daily losses from the strike at "10 to 15 million" euros ($13-$19 million) and said management was "doing everything with the social partners to try and find a way out of this situation."
Barber warned the transport situation would be even worse on Tuesday and Wednesday as the pilots who did decide to work on Monday would have to take their legally stipulated rest.
The company said: "If the strike continues beyond September 15, the flight schedule will be modified as a result. The knock-on effects will be communicated to passengers the day before they are due to leave."
Seeking to take advantage of its rival's woes, low-cost airline easyJet on Saturday laid on 1,000 extra seats on flights from Paris to the southern cities of Toulouse and Nice (Milan: NICE.MI - news) .

Air France Cancels 60 Pct Of Flights As Strike Continues

September 16, 2014

The pilot strike at Air France has entered its second day with the two sides apparently no closer to resolving a dispute over cost cuts that has forced the carrier to cancel 60 percent of flights.
The airline said it expected to operate "at least 40 percent of its flights" on Wednesday, based on three fifths of pilots walking out, as management prepared to hold further talks with unions on Tuesday.
The pilots are carrying out a week-long strike over Air France's plans to expand the low-cost operations of its Transavia unit by setting up foreign bases to fight fierce competition from European low-cost airlines.
"We're continuing to negotiate, we have made proposals, we have heard the concerns of pilots who imagined that Transavia France could suddenly replace all of Air France across France," airline chief Frederic Gagey told Europe 1 radio.
The expansion of Transavia is part of a new strategic plan unveiled last week aimed at boosting earnings that sees Transavia having a fleet of 100 aircraft by 2017, up from about 50 now, and more than doubling passenger numbers to 20 million, with a goal of lifting it out of the red in 2018.
Gagey sought to reassure pilots, saying the Transavia fleet would be limited to 30 aircraft in France and that the idea was not to replace Air France but "to attack a new market, the leisure market".
But he ruled out giving Transavia pilots the same contracts as Air France colleagues.
Pay and conditions for pilots switching to Transavia are seen as the biggest roadblock in the dispute, which Air France has said is costing it about EUR€10 million - EUR€15 million a day.

Prime minister demands end to pilot strikes at Air France

The French government has called for an end to the Air France pilots’ strike, which has grounded more than half of flights and cost the airline millions of euros this week, saying that it was damaging the image of the country.
Manuel Valls, the prime minister, said on France Inter radio that the strike was “weighing heavily on Air France, as well as on its finances, and on the attractiveness and the image of our country”.
No one understands what this strike is about,” he added.
The French pilots union organised a week-long strike that has already grounded thousands of flights, demanding that employees at Air France-KLM’s low-cost Transavia division are paid the same as regular Air France pilots.
It comes as Air France is attempting to expand its low-cost services in response to pressure from budget carriers led by easyJet on European short-haul routes. This has prompted union fears that these services will end up cannibalising Air France’s short-haul flights.
Emmanuel Macron, the former investment banker who replaced leftwing firebrand Arnaud Montebourg as budget minister, also called for an end to the strikes, saying “we cannot accept that a country gets blocked because of just a few”.
The comments came after France’s socialist government narrowly defeated a vote of no-confidence in the French parliament on Tuesday. The government survived a rebellion by leftwing parliamentarians over a more pro-business stance being adopted by ministers.
Frédéric Gagey, Air France chief executive, on Wednesday told Europe 1 radio that management are negotiating with the unions and have “heard the concerns of pilots who imagined that Transavia France could suddenly replace all of Air France across France”.
Air France said it expected to operate “at least 40 per cent of its flights” on Wednesday, based on three-fifths of pilots walking out, and the airline has sent out hundreds of thousands of text messages to passengers with warnings about cancelled services.
Alexandre de Juniac, chief executive of Air France-KLM, last week told the Financial Times that he would halt the development of Transavia in France and expand the low-cost division elsewhere in Europe if no agreement is reached with the unions.
Lufthansa, the German flag carrier, has also suffered several days of industrial action this year over proposals to change early retirement rules.
But on Tuesday Lufthansa made some progress on labour relations when UFO, the cabin crew union, reached agreement on staffing levels for a planned new low-cost, long-haul airline.
Europe’s large airline groups are all attempting to reduce their costs to better compete with European budget airlines and fast-growing long-haul carriers, but some are encountering strong resistance from influential unions.

Assolutamente d'accordo.

No one understands what this strike is about,” he added.
