Delta continues international growth with new Boston-Rome flight, expanded service to 10 trans-Atlantic destinations

Delta customers will have even more flight options between the U.S. and Europe beginning in 2020.

  • Boston's No. 1 global carrier boosts trans-Atlantic seats by more than 30% in 2020, including new service to London-Gatwick and Manchester, and second daily Paris service.
  • Double-digit growth in international flying out of JFK planned for 2020 including daytime London-Heathrow service.
  • Beginning in 2020, all of Delta's trans-Atlantic flights over six and a half hours will feature the carrier's premium Delta One experience, with reinvented International Main Cabin experience launching in Nov. 2019.

Delta customers will have even more flight options between the U.S. and Europe beginning in 2020, with new summer service between Boston and Rome and expanded flying from three of the airline's hubs to 10 popular trans-Atlantic destinations. The largest airline across the Atlantic,* Delta offers more flights connecting the U.S. and Europe than any other carrier and plans to add about 780,000 additional seats in 2020.

"Consumers are looking for more opportunities to visit Europe, so we've added more destinations and more flight times," said Joe Esposito, Senior Vice President – Network Planning. "In addition to offering the most comprehensive schedule of any U.S. carrier across the Atlantic, we've invested significantly in our aircraft, service and products for customers traveling between the U.S. and Europe."

Last month, Delta announced a 15 percent increase in seats between the U.S. and the U.K., including the addition of daytime service connecting JFK and London-Heathrow as well as new service between Boston and both Manchester and London-Gatwick. Beginning this winter, all of Delta's flights connecting Heathrow with Boston and New York will be operated using the carrier's newly retrofitted Boeing 767-400 aircraft, featuring all four branded seat products including a more private Delta One experience.

"These new services strengthen our position across the Atlantic with more than five percent growth in 2020," said Roberto Ioriatti, Vice President – Transatlantic. "The Europe, Middle East and Africa region is our largest international entity and these new services, together with our partners, strengthen that further."

As Boston's fastest-growing global carrier, Delta offers more flights across the Atlantic than any other airline

In 2020, Delta will launch four new trans-Atlantic flights from Boston, including new seasonal service to Rome, the carrier's second daily flight to Paris and new service to London-Gatwick and Manchester. The carrier will also extend seasonal service between Boston and Edinburgh and Lisbon, two popular destinations added in 2019.

Delta announced the new Boston-Rome service at a press event at Logan International, where the airline officially assumed operations at all gates in Logan Airport's Terminal A. Delta will be the terminal's sole operator for the first time since the facility opened in 2005.

New York-JFK schedule expansion includes twice-daily, year-round Tel Aviv service

In addition to new daytime service from New York to London-Heathrow, next year Delta's second-daily flight from JFK to Tel Aviv will become year-round, adding to Delta's already-leading position as New York's No. 1 carrier. Delta is also launching new service to Mumbai and Bogota in Dec. 2019, and is expanding the availability of seasonal service from JFK to Athens, Copenhagen and Berlin.

Delta has grown its presence in New York City by over 65 percent in the last 10 years and today operates more than 520 peak-day departures from its hubs at LaGuardia and JFK. The airline is JFK's No. 1 carrier, offering more than 240 peak daily departures to nearly 100 worldwide destinations.

More international flights for Salt Lake City and Amsterdam

Delta's seasonal service between its hub at Salt Lake City International Airport and London-Heathrow will become year-round beginning Dec.19, 2019. Additionally, the carrier is expanding the operating season between Tampa and Amsterdam in 2020.

Delta continues to invest in the trans-Atlantic customer experience

Beginning in 2020, all of Delta's trans-Atlantic flights over six and a half hours will feature the carrier's premium Delta One experience, which includes a dedicated in-cabin flight attendant; a 180-degree flat-bed seat; extra-wide inflight entertainment screens; and seasonally rotating, chef-designed Delta One menus with the option to pre-select first choice of entrée, paired with wines hand-selected by Master Sommelier Andrea Robinson.

In addition to Delta's award-winning operational reliability and service, all cabins of service on flights between Europe and the U.S. include complimentary meals, snacks and beverages. This November, Delta is launching a first-of-its-kind bistro-style international Main Cabin experience featuring welcome cocktails, hot-towel service and mix-and-match options for premium appetizers and larger entrees.

All seats on all flights also offer personal entertainment systems with free entertainment, free mobile messaging, high-capacity overhead bins, Wi-Fi, upgraded amenity kits and more. More international onboard enhancements are coming soon, like refreshed ear buds and headsets, to further demonstrate the airline's commitment to creating a best-in-class experience all customers can look forward to.

Delta's trans-Atlantic flights are operated in partnership with its joint venture partners Virgin Atlantic, Air France and KLM. The U.S. Department of Transportation recently granted the four airlines preliminary approval for a combined joint venture that will provide customers an extensive network of 300 daily flights.
*Based on number of flights operated by Delta between the United States and Europe, Africa, and the Middle East for the 2019 calendar year, when compared to other airlines.

@AZ209

Logan Lands Direct Daily Flight To Rome; Delta Will Provide Seasonal Nonstop Service to Major Market with Strong Ties to Bost
November 06, 2002

The Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) today announced that Delta Air Lines will begin nonstop daily service to Rome, Italy starting in May 2003. The seasonal service will run from May through September and will be Boston's only nonstop link to the Italian capital.

"New service to Rome, coupled with Lufthansa's Munich service introduced earlier this year, solidifies Boston's importance as a destination for international travel," said Massport CEO Craig P. Coy. "A world class city needs nonstop access to the international marketplace for business and leisure travelers. We will continue to meet our customers' needs by attracting flights to key markets."

Late last year, officials from Massport and Rome's airport jointly met with Delta representatives to discuss the importance and necessity of linking Boston and Rome with nonstop service. Massport estimated that in 2000, 60,000 passengers traveled between Rome and Boston, making it one of the largest international markets from Boston not served by a nonstop flight. Since Alitalia moved its Boston service from Rome to Milan in 1998, establishing a nonstop flight to Rome has been a key Massport objective.

"Delta Air Lines' nonstop service to Rome provides a critical link between two world-class cities," said Paul Guzzi, President and CEO of the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce. "This new service will strengthen our region's ability to compete in international markets, and support the Greater Boston visitor industry. Additionally, many Boston residents and business leaders have strong cultural ties to Italy, so Delta's new offering is a natural fit. The business community congratulates Delta on this service."

The flights will feature Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.

The new Delta schedule between Boston and Rome starting on May 1, 2003:

Delta Flight 114 departs Boston 5:40 p.m. Arrives Rome 7:45 a.m.
Delta Flight 115 departs Rome 12:20 p.m. Arrives Boston 3:40 p.m.

Delta Air Lines Decreases Capacity Due to Military Action in Iraq; Airline Maintains Strong Schedule to Get Customers Where They Want to Go
Monday March 24, 2003 12:41 pm ET

ATLANTA, March 24 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Delta Air Lines (NYSE: DAL - News) today announced it will decrease its network capacity by approximately 12 percent in response to declining passenger demand due to military action in Iraq. The decrease affects domestic and international locations, but maintains the airline's customer-focused schedule. The changes do not affect the airline's Delta Connection partners.

"Military action in the Middle East and the resulting heightened security sensitivities have contributed to a steep decline in passenger demand within the airline industry," said Subodh Karnik, senior vice president-Network and Revenue Management. "Delta isn't an exception, and we are taking steps to reduce the impact of these challenges while keeping a strong schedule to provide our customers travel choices."

The capacity reduction will impact Delta's transatlantic schedule through suspension of flights in some cities, and the delay of some seasonal service in others. Delta also will indefinitely postpone the start of seasonal service between Boston and Rome, and daily service between Cincinnati and Rome. Both were set to start May 1. However, the airline will continue to serve most of the affected cities via SkyTeam and its codeshare partners. Delta's Latin American, Caribbean and Pacific service are not affected.

Domestically, Delta will not reduce the number of destinations it serves, but will decrease the number of flights it offers on routes where there are currently multiple flights scheduled.

"We will continue to offer our customers a wide range of schedule options to all of Delta's destinations," said Karnik.

The transatlantic changes are effective April 6, while the domestic changes are effective March 27. The changes will be in effect at least through April. Some of the changes may be in effect longer if passenger demand for these routes remains weak as a result of the conflict in the Middle East.

"We hope to reinstate the entire schedule as soon as passenger demand returns," said Karnik. "We will continue to monitor the situation and keep our customers informed of any changes."

Delta wants its inflight WiFi to be fast and free
Delta is set to become the first of America's 'big three' airlines to roll out fast and free WiFi on domestic flights.

David Flynn
Delta Air Lines aims to offer free WiFi on all flights, in a game-changing move which could put pressure on arch-rivals American Airlines and United to unshackle their inflight Internet services.

“We’re working on it... you will have it soon” teased Delta CEO Ed Bastian at the Skift Forum travel industry conference in New York last week.

Central to that 'experience' is to ensure Delta's inflight WiFi is not only free but fast, rather than see a plane-load of passengers creating a log-jam for the limited bandwidth available.

To that end, Bastian says the airline is working to increase on-board WiFi bandwidth based trials of free high-speed WiFi on selected domestic flights which began in May 2020, although this delivered mixed results and often sluggish speeds.

“We learned a lot,” Bastian said about that trial. "There were some things we found out that we hoped not to find out, in terms of the work needed until we can go for free."

What it all boils down to, Bastian related, is not economics but technology: specifically, having enough bandwidth to each aircraft to handle every passenger and meet their expectations.

The US carrier and Virgin Australia partner currently has WiFi installed across most of its fleet, with about 60% of those featuring a high-speed 2Ku satellite service with technology partner Gogo – a system capable of serving up 15Mbps to each device.

While Delta currently charges upwards of US$16 for a single-day WiFi pass, Bastian wants to ensure that when the price tag is removed those streaming-friendly broadband speeds will remain.

“We’re not there yet, but Gogo and Delta, working together, have dramatically improved the overall performance of Wi-Fi on our planes,” Bastion said.

David Flynn is the Editor-in-Chief of Executive Traveller and a bit of a travel tragic with a weakness for good coffee, shopping and lychee martinis.

DL surrounding AZ? Or even replacing in case of...?
