VENICE SQUARED: WIZZ AIR EXPANDS IN VENICE WITH A FOURTH BASED AIRCRAFT AND FIVE NEW ROUTES

Mar 12, 2026, 12:00

A new Airbus A321neo based at Venice Airport will add 500,000 seats and create new employment opportunities. The expansion, developed in cooperation with SAVE Group, strengthens the airline’s presence in North-East Italy and brings the network to 26 routes across 16 countries.

Wizz Air, the second largest airline in Italy by market share, is further strengthening its presence in Venice and, together with SAVE Group, announces a new phase of development for its base at Venice Marco Polo Airport. During a joint press conference, Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air, and Camillo Bozzolo, Aviation Development Director at SAVE Group, confirmed the arrival of a fourth Airbus A321neo in Venice from September 2026, a strategic investment that reinforces the role of the Venetian airport within the airline’s European network.

The addition of the new aircraft will further increase the airline’s operational capacity at the airport, generating 500,000 additional seats. The expansion will also contribute to the development of the local economy by creating 40 new direct jobs, adding to the more than 120 Wizz Air employees already based in Venice, and supporting over 350 indirect jobs across the local supply chain.

The airline’s investment will also result in the launch of five new routes, further strengthening the international connectivity of Venice Airport. Flights to Bilbao and Malaga will begin on 14 September 2026, while Alicante and Seville will launch on 15 September 2026. In addition, a new domestic route connecting Venice and Naples will start on 1 December 2026, further expanding the airline’s domestic network and strengthening connectivity between Northern and Southern Italy.

The new routes operated by Wizz Air will be:

  • Naples11 weekly frequencies, operating daily (from 1 December 2026)
  • Bilbao4 weekly flights, operating every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday during the summer season, and Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday during the winter season (from 14 September 2026)
  • Malaga4 weekly flights, operating every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday (from 14 September 2026)

With these additions, Wizz Air now operates a total of 26 routes from Venice to 16 countries, further strengthening the international connectivity of Venice Airport. Passengers departing from Marco Polo Airport can already fly to numerous destinations across Europe and the Mediterranean, including Yerevan (Armenia), Larnaca (Cyprus), Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt) and Tallinn (Estonia). The network also extends to key cities such as Bordeaux in France, Kutaisi in Georgia, Athens in Greece and Budapest in Hungary, in addition to connections to Kraków and Warsaw in Poland, Craiova and Iași in Romania, and London Luton in the United Kingdom. The offering also includes flights to Tel Aviv in Israel, Skopje in North Macedonia and Chișinău in Moldova, complemented by a well-established presence in Spain with routes to Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia, as well as domestic connections to Catania and Palermo.

Since its debut at Venice Marco Polo Airport on 1 June 2011 with the first flight to Bucharest, Wizz Air has carried more than 3.8 million passengers to and from Venice. Prior to today’s announcement, the airline planned to offer approximately 2.5 million seats in 2026 at the Venetian airport. With more than 1,240 direct employees in Italy, Wizz Air continues to strengthen its role in supporting the country’s connectivity.

“Venice is a unique city in the world, and today’s announcement of a fourth aircraft based here is the result of the strong collaboration built over the years with the airport and the local community,” said Salvatore Gabriele Imperiale, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air. “This expansion reflects the strong ties we have developed with the Veneto region and the entire North-East of Italy. It is a dynamic and constantly evolving territory that has recently been in the global spotlight thanks to the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympic Games, and we are proud to contribute to its connectivity through new routes, increased capacity and new employment opportunities. Venice represents a strategic base for us, from which we will continue to offer passengers more choice and competitive fares while supporting the economic and tourism development of the region. Let’s WIZZ, Venice!”

“We are very pleased to see Wizz Air continue its growth trajectory at Venice Marco Polo Airport with the arrival of the fourth based aircraft,” said Camillo Bozzolo, Aviation Development Director of the SAVE Group. “This investment represents a further step in the development of the airline’s Venice base and demonstrates the strong potential of our catchment area. The introduction of five new routes, with particular focus on the Spanish market, will significantly expand the airport’s international connectivity, offering new travel opportunities for passengers in North-East Italy while also strengthening tourism flows to Venice and the Veneto region.”

The expansion in Venice forms part of Wizz Air’s broader growth strategy in Italy. In 2026, the airline plans to offer 27 million seats in the country, operating with a fleet of 35 aircraft based across its six Italian bases in Catania, Naples, Rome, Palermo, Milan and Venice. Overall, Wizz Air’s Italian network includes 284 routes to 33 countries, confirming the airline’s role as one of the key drivers of international connectivity for Italy.

VCE-NAP è un gradito ritorno. La rotta con ogni probabilità parte a dicembre e non a metà settembre in quanto a novembre l'aeroporto sarà chiuso.
