Wizz Air Announces Proposed Establishment of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI, UAE, Dec. 12, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Wizz Air Holdings Plc (the "Company" or "Wizz Air"), Europe's greenest airline* and the largest low-cost airline in Central and Eastern Europe, announced today that it has reached agreement in principle for the establishment of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates in partnership with Abu Dhabi Development Holding Company PJSC ("ADDH"). The new airline will be Wizz Air's first airline established outside of Europe.
It is intended that Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will be formed via a joint venture, and operations are expected to launch in the second half of 2020. The airline will focus on establishing routes to markets in which Wizz Air has existing, high growth operations, namely Central and Eastern and Western Europe, as well as the Indian subcontinent, Middle East and Africa over the long run. Wizz Air believes that the establishment of a truly ultra-low cost airline in Abu Dhabi can contribute to the continued growth of Abu Dhabi as a world-class cultural and tourist destination. ADDH's deep rooted knowledge of the local market, support and navigation in a new market for WIZZ is invaluable and will boost the successful development of the new airline.
The establishment and start of the new airline is subject to, amongst other things, agreement and entry into force of definitive documentation with ADDH, the receipt of all necessary internal and external approvals and consents, and the new airline satisfying all regulatory requirements of the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority to obtain an Air Operator's Certificate ('AOC').
With a fleet composed of Airbus A321neo aircraft, the world's most efficient narrow body aircraft, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will gain access to markets with a total of 5 billion customers across Europe and beyond. The new airline's customer proposition will align directly to that of Wizz Air with a singular focus on offering a superior value based quality air travel built on the foundations of one of the world's greenest aircraft fleets*.

Commenting today in Abu Dhabi József Váradi Chief Executive Officer of Wizz Air Holdings said: "We are proud that our first airline to be established outside of Europe is in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE. ADDH's deep rooted knowledge of the local market, support and navigation in a new market for Wizz is invaluable and will boost the successful development of this low-cost airline."

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi will be an incremental path of growth for Wizz Air, built on our successful ultra-low cost business model, bringing affordable travel to ever more customers. We believe the new airline has the potential to be a significant player in the region. I would like to express my greatest gratitude to H.E. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan and Mr. Mohammad Al Suwaidi for their dedication and support, without which this unique partnership would not have been realized."- he added.

H.E. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Hamad Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Airports

UAE's low-cost airline 'Wizz Air Abu Dhabi' to launch in second half of 2020
[FONT=proxima_nova_rgregular]
Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company, ADDH, announced today that it concluded the definitive agreement with its partner Wizz Air Holdings, Europe's fastest growing and greenest airline, to jointly establish Wizz Air Abu Dhabi.
The low-cost airline is set to launch its operations at Abu Dhabi International Airport in Fall 2020.
The agreement is a major milestone in the launch of Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, a new Emirati low-cost airline based in the UAE's capital.
Wizz Air Abu Dhabi plans to start operations in the second half of the year, bringing low fares paired with a high-quality on-board experience to a range of destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
With Wizz Air Abu Dhabi's recruitment activities set to commence in the coming months, the agreement will create new job opportunities, boost the economy and attract more visitors to Abu Dhabi.
The announcement is also in line with Abu Dhabi's Dh50 billion accelerator programme Ghadan 21, which is driving the emirate's development through investing in business, innovation and people.
Following the agreement, the airline development team has already initiated the process with the UAE General Civil Aviation Authority to obtain the carrier's Air Operator Certificate and Operating License.
Commenting on the announcement, Mohamed Hassan Al Suwaidi, CEO of ADDH, said, "Tourism is a high priority in Abu Dhabi's growth strategy. Significant investment is going not only into our airports but also the tourist infrastructure, including hotels, resorts and cultural attractions. Last year the emirate achieved a record high of 11.35 million visitors and a key driver for this is the connectivity that enables people to visit Abu Dhabi easily and affordably. Our partnerships with Wizz Air and others will help elevate the UAE's capital as a highly competitive regional and international destination for leisure and business travellers alike."
Jozsef Varadi, CEO of Wizz Air Holdings, said, "Today marks an important milestone on the way to establishing our new airline in Abu Dhabi. The joint venture agreement with Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company to form Wizz Air Abu Dhabi underpins our long-term dedication to bringing an economically and operationally highly efficient as well as environmentally most sustainable airline business model to boost Abu Dhabi's aviation development."
"Wizz Air's mission feeds into Abu Dhabi's diversified economic strategy as we aim to stimulate traffic by creating demand to the benefit of growing Abu Dhabi's touristic and economic diversity. We look forward to welcoming passengers on board our young, green and ultra-efficient fleet," Varadi explained.

Wizz Air Abu Dhabi to begin operations with six aircraft instead of three
Reuters/London
Filed on June 3, 2020 | Last updated on June 3, 2020 at 12.33 pm

Wizz saw opportunities emerging despite the Covid-19 challenge, the airline's CEO says.

Wizz Air's Abu Dhabi-based joint venture will now be bigger than originally planned with six aircraft up from three, the Hungary-based carrier's chief executive said on Wednesday.

The joint venture with Abu Dhabi state holding company ADQ will start flying in October, with tickets on sale from June to destinations in Europe, the Indian subcontinent, Middle East and Africa.

"We are looking at a larger scale start versus what we originally contemplated," Wizz CEO Jozsef Varadi told Reuters, saying that despite the challenge of Covid-19, Wizz saw opportunities emerging.

"We would be looking at a six aircraft start in the first six months."

Profit guidance

Hungarian low-cost airline Wizz Air said it could not provide profit guidance for this year because of the coronavirus pandemic which has heavily restricted air travel, after it grew profit 30 per cent last year.

For the year to the end of March 2020, Wizz posted underlying net profit of 344.8 million euros ($386 million), slightly behind its forecast of 350-355 million euros due to forex headwinds, but ahead of last year's result after it flew 16 per cent more passengers.

Since the end of its financial period, operations at Wizz, focused on eastern and central Europe but with significant operations in western Europe too, have been severely limited by the pandemic and it said that it was too early to guide on net profit due to coronavirus-related uncertainty.

Wizz, however, is still planning to take all of its aircraft deliveries meaning it has the ability to grow seat numbers by nine per cent in the financial year to the end of March 2021 depending on the easing of restrictions.

Airlines across the world have announced job cuts and said they will need to shrink their fleets to survive the pandemic, which for the last ten weeks has shut down air travel, leaving them struggling without revenues.

While Wizz has cut 1,000 jobs, it is cash-rich. It said on Wednesday it had 1.5 billion euros of cash, giving it the confidence to stick with its long-term expansion plans.

"We are confident that we can ramp up operations quickly, re-stimulate demand with our ultra-low fares and contribute to the vital recovery of travel and tourism in our markets," said Wizz's chief executive Jozsef Varadi in a statement.

Wizz, Europe's No. 3 budget carrier behind largest players Ryanair and easyJet, was one of the first airlines to restart some flights in May and said last week it would open new bases.

First Wizz Air flight lands in Abu Dhabi as airline eyes Middle East expansion

The Eastern European carrier is planning to begin services to Sofia, Katowice and Cluj-Napoca from September

Wizz Air, Eastern Europe’s biggest low-cost airline, started its scheduled service to Abu Dhabi with its first Budapest-Abu Dhabi flight on July 1 as it plans expansion within the region.
The airline, which is currently operating twice a week to Budapest and Bucharest from the UAE capital, is planning to begin flights to Sofia, Katowice and Cluj-Napoca from September this year.
“The arrival of Wizz Air is a testament to the strength of the Abu Dhabi market and a reflection of the success of our investments in transforming Abu Dhabi International Airport into a strategically-positioned global hub for airlines from across the world,” Khalil Lamrabet, senior vice president of aviation development at Abu Dhabi Airports, said.
The Hungarian low-cost airline’s operations start ahead of its collaboration with Abu Dhabi to form the country’s sixth national carrier, Wizz Air Abu Dhabi.

The new airline is awaiting an air operator's certificate from the UAE's aviation regulator and is carrying out the necessary steps to obtain the required licences and legal procedures to begin operations, the UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority said last week.
In June, Wizz Air chief executive Jozsef Varadi told delegates at a virtual Arabian Travel Market session that Wizz Air's Abu Dhabi operations will be bigger than expected as it looks to capture a larger share of the budget travel market in the GCC.
The UAE capital is a springboard to gain access to a market of 5 billion people within a six-and-a-half hour flying span, Mr Varadi said.
Wizz Air plans to replicate the success of its European point-to-point short-haul flying business model in the Arab world’s second-biggest economy, he said.
Unlike other carriers, Wizz Air is confident of a resurgence in air travel demand amid the Covid-19-induced slowdown in travel. The airline is among a select few pushing ahead with a fleet expansion plan, saying that its low fares would help it secure market share.
