CALGARY – WestJet Airlines says it plans to buy 65 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, with a value of US$6.3-billion at list price.
The Calgary-based carrier is substituting 15 current planes on order for the newest jets from Boeing with first delivery slated for September 2017.
“We are proud to continue our long-standing relationship with Boeing and are thrilled that we will be among the first North American airlines to fly the new 737 MAX in its first year of commercial operation,” WestJet President and CEO Gregg Saretsky said in a statement.
WestJet will be one of the first airlines in North America to use the new Boeing MAX aircraft, which are expected to reduce the company’s fuel bill by as much as 13 per cent from the most fuel-efficient planes currently available on the market.
WestJet’s current fleet consists of 103 Boeing Next-Generation 737 and four Bombardier Q400 NextGen aircraft being used on its regional airline, WestJet Encore.
