United Applies to U.S. DOT for Authority to Operate Service to Chengdu, China
• Application for service between San Francisco and Chengdu, China starting June 9, 2014
• Three weekly Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner flights
• When approved, United would be the only U.S. carrier offering service to Chengdu
United has applied to the U.S. Department of Transportation for authority to begin nonstop service linking the airline's San Francisco (SFO) hub with Chengdu, China (CTU), the fourth-largest Chinese city, effective June 9, 2014.
United intends to use the world's most advanced passenger airplane, the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, to operate three-times-weekly service to Chengdu. If approved, Chengdu will be the ninth destination United serves in the Asia/Pacific region nonstop from San Francisco, from which United offers more nonstop trans-Pacific flights from the United States than any other carrier – nearly twice as many as any airline from any West Coast city.
Chengdu, China: A Gateway for Business
The fourth largest city in China and the capital of Sichuan province, Chengdu is one of country's fastest-developing cities economically with more than 200 Fortune 500 companies operating in Chengdu. With a population of approximately 14 million in the urban area, Sichuan is famous as the natural habitat of the giant panda and home to one of China's most popular cuisines.
United's China flights feature additional amenities and services designed for Chinese customers, including: Mandarin-speaking flight attendants; personalized in-flight entertainment options, including Chinese-language services; and a wide selection of in-flight meals and beverages, including Chinese-style cuisine.

United offers nonstop service to Beijing, Hong Kong, Shanghai from Los Angeles, Chicago, New York/Newark, San Francisco and Washington/Dulles; Guam, Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City.
As members of Star Alliance, United and Air China have a bilateral partnership that includes codesharing on select routes and provides customers of both carriers additional travel benefits such as airport lounge access and frequent flyer program reciprocity. Air China offers flights to 59 cities from Chengdu, many of which will offer same-day connections to United's new Chengdu service.
