NEWARK — The Federal Aviation Administration website is reporting that the main air traffic control tower at Newark Liberty International Airport has been evacuated due to a fire alarm.
The evacuation has caused delays on arriving and departing flights, according to the website.
The FAA has yet to return a call for comment.
A spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said he was not aware of what set off the alarm, but was of the understanding that air traffic control operators were moving to a backup tower closer to the airport’s Terminal C, which may result in residual delays.
A fire forced air traffic controllers to evacuate the control tower at Newark Liberty Airport Friday evening, the FAA said.
All outbound flights are grounded as a temporary control center is set up in the airport’s Terminal C, according to WNBC. Inbound flights are being diverted to other airports
