SkyEurope wins grace period from Vienna airport
Tue Aug 11, 2009 10:59am EDT

VIENNA, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Troubled Slovak airline SkyEurope (SKYV.VI) won a grace period until Friday to pay outstanding invoices after Vienna airport temporarily grounded its flights on Tuesday, airport operator Flughafen Wien (VIEV.VI) said. Budget airline SkyEurope, which obtained creditor protection in Slovakia in June and has been seeking to raise new funds for months, has to pay its debts to Flughafen by Friday, 1300 GMT or else the operator will suspend all services, Flughafen said.

Vienna airport on Tuesday grounded SkyEurope flights including to Athens and Nice because it said the operator had not paid its dues. It resumed its services after SkyEurope promised to pay them by Friday, Flugafen said.

SkyEurope said last month it had found a new investor who was ready to inject as much as 16.5 million euros in fresh equity and also got a 5 million euro bridge loan.

The economic slowdown has hit the airline hard and its financial problems have added to the woes as it lost even more passengers because of concerns it may go insolvent. In July, passenger traffic declined by 37 percent year on year. (Reporting by Boris Groendahl; Editing by Jon Loades-Carter)

SkyEurope criticises Vienna Airport for releasing confidential information
13 Aug 2009 Flash News

Vienna airport Schwechat Flughafen Wien AG on August 11 violated a secrecy agreement when it released information about its temporary suspension of the handling of Slovak-based airline SkyEurope’s planes, SkyEurope spokesman Tomáš Kika said on August 12.

"The negotiations were of a private nature and were held under an agreement of discretion with Vienna airport," said Kika. Nonetheless, the airport issued press releases in which details of the agreement with the airline were stated. "We're looking into this situation from a legal point of view as well," Kika said.

Schwechat airport suspended handling of SkyEurope's flights on Tuesday because, it said, the airline had not paid its debt despite appeals and fixed maturity dates. The airport’s move led to the delay of six SkyEurope flights. "The [affected] passengers have been provided with everything they have a right to claim in line with the valid legislation and regulations of the EU Directive," stressed Kika.

SkyEurope made an agreement with Vienna airport late on Tuesday that the debt would be paid by Friday (August 14) afternoon. If the Slovak-based airline does not pay, Schwechat will terminate the services it currently provides to SkyEurope immediately. Kika refused to comment on any information presented in the media concerning the details of the secrecy agreement. TASR

UPDATE 1-Vienna airport halts SkyEurope flights from Saturday
Fri Aug 14, 2009 9:49am EDT

* Will stop servicing SkyEurope flights Friday midnight

* Airport says SkyEurope did not pay outstanding debt

VIENNA, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Vienna airport will stop servicing flights of ailing Slovak budget airline SkyEurope (SKYV.VI) by midnight Friday after SkyEurope failed to pay outstanding debt, operator Flughafen Wien said on Friday.

"Despite long and intensive talks with SkyEurope, the outstanding and due payments were not made by Friday, 3 p.m.," Flughafen Wien said in a statement. "Flughafen Wien therefore ends all services to SkyEurope by Friday, midnight."

"Skyeurope aircraft whose scheduled departure is later than that will not be handled anymore," it said, adding that it would still handle incoming SkyEurope flights.

Flughafen granted SkyEurope a grace period until Friday to pay outstanding invoices after temporarily grounding its flights on Tuesday already. [ID:LB134582] SkyEurope, which obtained creditor protection in Slovakia in June, said last month it won a new investor who was ready to inject as much as 16.5 million euros ($23.6 million) in fresh equity and also got a 5 million euro bridge loan.

The economic slowdown has hit the airline hard and its financial problems have added to the woes as it lost even more passengers because of concerns it may go insolvent. In July, passenger traffic declined by 37 percent year-on-year.
