Turkish Airlines turns to profit, shares rise
ISTANBUL, June 4 (Reuters) - Turkish Airlines turned a net profit of 40.6 million lira ($30.9 million) in the first quarter after a loss last year, sending its shares 4 percent higher.
Analysts said the market had been expecting a loss of around $25 million, and sales and cost growth had been better than expected. In the first quarter of last year, the flag carrier posted a loss of 185.76 million lira.
By 0810 GMT its stock, which has already outperformed the market this year, rose 3.6 percent to 8.75 lira, trading in high volumes in a broadly flat market. The shares had risen 39 percent this year up to Friday's close, compared with a 19 percent rise on the main share index.
"The top line was better than expected and also on an operating level it was better," said Cemal Demirtas, analyst at Oyak Securities, adding he would revise up his full-year profit forecast from a current $112 million.
Sales rose 49 percent to 919.6 million lira. Operating costs rose a slower 17 percent and costs from other operations fell almost 50 percent, the company said.
