[BANGKOK] Thai Airways International expects a net loss of about 12 billion baht (US$368 million) in 2013 and similar losses in 2014 due to the cost of new aircraft and a drop in tourist arrivals because of political unrest, a board member said on Friday.

In order to cut costs and address the drop in passengers, the national carrier plans to reduce the number of flights by 20-30 per cent, the board member, who declined to be named, told reporters.

The impact of the political unrest is expected to be felt until the third quarter of this year, he said.

The airline is due to announce its 2013 earnings on Feb 25. - Reuters

Numeri decisamente non buoni:

Thai Airways booked a third successive quarter of losses after a falling baht hit revenue and pushed up its foreign debt and the political unrest in Thailand deterred visitors from abroad.

The result comes after a turbulent start to 2014 which has seen the resignations of both the chairman and president.
Earnings in the last three months of 2013 suffered from a rise in the cost of repaying roughly USD$5 billion worth of primarily euro-denominated debt, caused by a 5.8 percent decline in the value of the baht against the euro.
The baht also fell against the dollar and yen - which, with the euro, account for 75 percent of revenue - due to concerns for the economy following the anti-government protests.
The protests also led to a slowdown in visitor numbers just as the airline had increased capacity with the delivery of new aircraft. The result was a fourth-quarter net loss of THB5.65 billion baht (USD$174 million), which compared with a profit of THB792 million in the same period of 2012.
For the full year, the airline booked a net loss of THB12 billion baht, which compared with a profit of THB6.2 billion in 2012.
Shares in Thai Airways closed down 1.5 percent ahead of the earnings release, compared with a 0.2 percent rise in the benchmark index. The release was initially scheduled for February 21 and then midday February 25, but was delayed while awaiting the auditor's sign-off.

PROTEST IMPACT

Thai Airways, 51 percent owned by the Ministry of Finance, expects a further loss in 2014 due to the drop in passenger traffic as a result of the political unrest.

The unrest, aimed at removing Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, was sparked by the prime minister's dismissal of corruption allegations against her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, a former prime minister ousted by the military in 2006.
Visitor numbers to Thailand rose 6.7 percent in December and just 0.1 percent in January with the total for all of last year up 19.6 percent.
Thai Airways' load factor was 71.5 percent of capacity in January compared with 78.8 percent last year in the January-March period - the peak tourist season.
For February and March this year prospective load factors are so far running at 65 percent and 49 percent respectively.
Its total passenger load factor for last year fell 2.5 percentage points to 74.1 percent.
"Although Thai Air is adjusting to a new business model, the improvement has lagged peers. We do not expect to see a recovery this year," said Jaroonpan Wattanawong, analyst at Maybank Kim Eng Securities.
The decline in passenger numbers is particularly problematic as Thai Air increased its fleet by seven aircraft in the fourth quarter to 100 planes.
Its passenger yield fell by 2.6 percent to 2.65 baht in 2013 while it took deliveries of 17 aircraft over the whole year, it said in a statement. It gave no details about quarterly results.
Thai Airways acquired the new, more fuel efficient aircraft as a means of cutting costs, deemed necessary to compete with regional rivals such as Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific.
The strategy was drawn up under chairman Ampon Kittiampon, who resigned last week citing the pursuit of good governance after completing nearly two three-year terms.
Ampon's resignation, effective from March, followed that of President Sorachak Kasemsuwan who resigned last month citing ill health.
Ampon and Sorachak's acting successor, Chokchai Panyayong, was called on to resign earlier this month by a union representing nearly all of the airline's 25,000 employees.

Thai Air Warns Of Steeper Q1 Loss

April 21, 2014

Thai Airways on Monday warned of a steeper-than-expected first-quarter net loss as passenger numbers fell due to prolonged political unrest in Thailand and fierce competition from low-cost carriers.
"First quarter net loss will be higher than what we had expected by THB30 million (USD$930,000)," acting president Chokchai Panyayong told reporters after a board meeting. He did not give an exact figure for the anticipated loss.
Passenger numbers in March alone dropped almost 21 percent from the same month a year ago to 1.59 million, he said.
The number of seats sold in the first quarter also fell to 71.1 percent from 79.8 percent a year earlier, with March seeing a year-on-year drop of 11.6 percentage points to 68.7 percent.
Thai Airways, the country's national carrier, posted a third successive quarter of losses in Q4 after a falling baht hit revenue and anti-government protests deterred foreign tourists, especially from China, Japan and South Korea.

Thai Airways International (TG, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) management has approved a restructuring plan aimed at cutting over THB4billion (USD125.61million) in operational costs at the loss-making carrier over the next six months.

The airline's newly installed chairman, Air Chief Marshall Prajin Juntong, told the Bangkok Post last week that the plan will involve two stages the first of which entails a return to profitability by mid-2015 through the early retirement of hundreds of employees alongside the cutting of overtime claims. The airline directly employs 25'000 staff with an additional 5'000 sourced from subcontractors.

In addition, the carrier will roll out cheaper, more attractive fares to help increase revenue inflows by between USD94-157million.

The second part, due to commence in the third quarter of next year, entails the restructuring of the company's hierarchy involving the hiring of more operational staff, and the improvement of Thai's inflight product.

Concerning operational changes, the plan will see the rationalization of Thai's European route network coupled with the expansion of services to Japan and China. According to the Nation newspaper, Thai is also considering moving some short-haul or domestic services of its subsidiaryThai Smile (WE, Bangkok Suvarnabhumi) from Suvarnabhumi to Bangkok Don Mueang airport.

In a bid to reduce its fuel cost overheads, Thai will maintain the delivery of brand new A330-300s,A350-900s and B787-8s while phasing out its older A330-300s, A340-600s, B777-200(ER)s andB737-400s.

"It should take one to two years, or probably to the first quarter of next year, to see the result of the restructuring. Performance should improve and we aim to be number one in 2017," acting President, Air Chief Marshal Siwakiat Jayema, said.

Months of political turmoil have led to a delay in the implementation of important strategic decisions, resulting in the military junta placing the airline at the top of its list of 56 state-owned enterprises in dire need of restructuring. Losses this year are expected to top THB100billion (USD3.14billion).

THAI Clarifies Rumor Untrue on 200 Pilots Resigning

Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) provided clarification on the rumor that 200 pilots have resigned at one time is untrue.

First Lieutenant Athisak Padchuenjai, THAI Executive Vice President of Operations Department, said that news that 200 pilots have resigned is not true and stated that THAI’s Operations Department has not received letters of resignation from 200 pilots, as reported by various media.

It may be accurately stated that each year there are pilots who express their intent to resign from the Company, which is considered normal practice and does not impact the Company’s flight operations.

Currently, THAI has 1,350 pilots (as of August 2014), all of whom have been through high standard international training and follow strict operating procedures. THAI also has a well-established pilot program plan for devising its annual recruitment of new pilots. THAI recognizes that at the present time there is a high demand for trained commercial pilots which may be the cause of such rumors and interest from the media.

Thai Airways Load Factor Falls In August

September 30, 2014

Thai Airways said its load factor fell to 75.3 percent in August from 78 percent in the same period last year.
The figure included flights operated by its Thai Smile Airways unit, the airline said in a statement.
However, the airline said there were some positive signs for Thailand's tourism industry as the number of foreign visitors arriving at Bangkok's main Suvarnabhumi airport rose 15 percent in August from July but was down 13.3 percent from the same month last year.
The airline is in the throes of a restructuring after posting losses for five straight quarters after the tourism industry was hit by domestic political unrest.

National airline to downsize and reduce routes.

The State Enterprise Policy Committee has approved in principle Thai Airways International's rehabilitation plan, which was discussed in a meeting on Monday chaired by the prime minister.
Measures will include a reduction of the airline's staffing by 5,000 and cancellation of its non-performing routes.

THAI is one of even troubled state enterprises. In the first nine months of 2014, the airline suffered losses of Bt9 billion. It recorded a loss of Bt12 billion in 2013.

The rehabilitation plan will see its workforce slashed from 25,000 to 20,000.

The Bangkok-Johannesburg route was already cancelled on January 15 and the Bangkok-Madrid, Bangkok-Moscow, Bangkok-Los Angeles routes are likely to be axed in the second quarter of this year.

Decisions on routes that do not make a profit but are considered to have potential will be made in the fourth quarter. They include Bangkok-Rome, Bangkok-Milan, Bangkok-Brussels, Bangkok-Brisbane, Bangkok-Sapporo, Bangkok-Colombo, Bangkok-Denpasar and Bangkok-Hyderabad.

Under the rehabilitation plan, THAI’s fleet will also be revised. It will sell 22 old aircraft and decommission 14 Boeing 747-400 and Airbus A 340-600 craft.

THAI also plans to sell its stakes in Nok Air, BAFS and Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel. THAI holds a 39-percent stake in Nok Air, a 22.59-percent stake in BAFS and a 30-percent stake in Novotel Suvarnabhumi Airport Hotel. THAI also plans to sell its shares in the Amari Airport Hotel and Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel as part of its business restructuring.
