Air France passengers speak of terror on plane that plummeted towards sea

Passengers on an Air France flight travelling from Paris to Bogotá have spoken of how they thought they were going to die when the plane they were on plummeted towards the Atlantic ocean after a burning smell filled the cabin.

Euclides and Rosa Montes, Colombians with British nationality travelling from London to Bogotá via Paris, told the Guardian that people on board were "saying their goodbyes to one another" as the plane – an Airbus A340-300 – rapidly descended to within 2,000 feet of the sea to offload fuel.

"We looked out of the window and the sea was directly below us," said Euclides. "Fuel was pouring out over the wings. We thought we were going to die."

Another passenger on the plane, Eden Victoria Erlandsson, told the Swedish newspaper Expressen, that "panic took over, the cabin crew were sweating and shouting, and people were crying and praying. It was total panic."

Air France told the Guardian the atmosphere was "tense" after an alarm went off in the crew rest area, but said the reports of smoke in the cabin and panic were "false" and a "gross exaggeration".

The flight, which was carrying hundreds of passengers, made an emergency landing on the Azores island of Terceira at about 1.30pm on Monday afternoon.

After landing on a runway at Lajes airport on the tiny island, passengers claimed they were evacuated via emergency slides amid general chaos. Fire brigades and ambulances were scrambled to the scene.

At least 50 of the Colombian nationals on board were reportedly refused permission to enter the Azores as they do not hold the required Shengen visa documentation. However, Air France said all passengers were transferred to hotels.

After the incident some passengers questioned whether the flight should have taken off, after its departure was delayed for 34 minutes due to unspecified technical problems at Charles de Gaulle airport. Passengers claimed when flight AF422 finally took off from Charles de Gaulle at 11.24am the smell of burning was already apparent.

Two hours into the flight the plane rapidly diverted, turning back to the nearest landing point available, after the alarm went off.

However, Air France contested the version of events given by passengers. "There was no smoke on board and no use of the emergency slides," said Air France spokeswoman Marina Tymen.

"After the fire alarm went off the masks came down and the plane was diverted. Another plane and crew were despatched to take the passengers on to Bogotá. This was all perfectly normal standard procedure according to the rules that apply not just to Air France but to any airline, even though it was a false alarm."

"I can say categorically: there was no smoke, there was no fire and the emergency slides were not deployed," she said

"We looked out of the window and the sea was directly below us," said Euclides.

Air France would like to apologize to the passengers of flight AF 422, travelling from Paris-CDG to Bogota, which had to divert to Terceira in the Azores yesterday, 5 March 2012.

The Airbus A340, which left Paris-CDG on 5 March 2012 with 274 passengers on board and 14 crew members, landed in Terceira (Azores) due to a technical problem.

During the flight, at cruising altitude and approximately 200 kms from the coast of the Azores, a smoke alarm sounded in the cabin crew rest area. The Flight Captain decided to divert to the nearest airport as a precautionary measure to guarantee passenger safety. This decision is in line with the manufacturer's procedures and Company instructions. In line with procedures, the cabin crew, in charge of passenger safety, put on the breathing protection masks to inspect the rest area.

No smoke was detected.

The crew nevertheless continued to Terceira airport, after having emptied fuel in line with the manufacturer's instructions.

The crew informed the passengers in French, English and Spanish, of the reasons for the diversion.

The aircraft landed normally around thirty minutes later in Terceira at 14:26 local time.

The crew reported no injuries, illness or panic among the passengers, who left the aircraft normally using both of the airport's jetways.

Air France provided them with accommodation at hotels around the airport.

Following an investigation by the airport fire department and maintenance teams, no trace of smoke or any other irregularity was found on the aircraft.

The diversion of an aircraft is a situation which presents no risks, for which the crews are trained and have experience.

To continue the trip to Bogota, an Air France Airbus A340 was sent to Terceira a few hours after the event. The passengers took off this afternoon at 15:38 local time from Terceira to Bogota. The landing is scheduled for 18:43 local time in Bogota.

The Flight Captain is highly experienced and is also an instructor.
The Chief Purser is of Argentinian origin and speaks fluent Spanish.

"...con atterraggio di fortuna alle isole Azzorre, a Terçeira pista di Lajes, aeroporto americano..."

Americano?!? :astonished: Mah... ho studiato male io da piccolo la geografia... oppure l'America ha espropriato al Portogallo le Azzorre e non lo sapevo?!?
In effetti Lajes (TER) ospita traffico militare sia portoghese che americano, oltre che voli civili. Comunque sì, l'articolo è scritto un po' male.

da Avherald

"Passengers reported an unusual burning odour shortly after takeoff, that had been delayed by about 30 minutes due to some technical issue. About 3 hours into the flight the odour intensified and smoke became visible in the cabin, seemingly emanating from a lavatory. The aircraft dumped fuel while descending towards the Azores Islands."

sinceramente se vedo fumo nella cabina, sara' anche nulla, ma io me la faccio addosso. Soprattutto se sono sopra l'Atlantico.

Si ma leggilo tutto l'avherald:

Passenger Alessandro Colombo was seated in the front row of premium voyager class and told The Aviation Herald, that he could not notice any smoke, unusual odour or unusual sounds from his seat, however, he noticed something was going on in the left aft part of the cabin. The aircraft was northwest of the Azores Islands when it turned to divert to Lajes, the captain announced they had a smoke alert, would divert to Lajes and would dump fuel on the way to Lajes. The aircraft, while dumping fuel, descended normally to 3000 feet (according to map/flight progress display on the entertainment system), continued at that altitude, still dumping fuel, for about 20 minutes straight towards Lajes and landed safely. Alessandro described the scenario on board as calm with no panic whatsoever, four fire trucks awaited the aircraft at Lajes, 2 firemen entered the cabin in full safety equipment, the passengers disembarked quietly over airport stairs with all their belongings.
