Sterling Airlines orders eight eco-friendly 737NG Winglets with options on a further eight sets

Sterling is the first airline in Denmark to fly with the eco-friendly Blended Winglet technology from Aviation Partners. Now the company plans to equip all aircraft in the Boeing 737NG fleet with the eco-friendly system.

On 30 June Sterling Airlines had eight Blended Winglet systems delivered – seven 737-700 and one 737-800 system. The airline has been flying with four Blended Winglet 737-800 systems for a number of years and has now decided to switch to 100 percent Blended Winglets. Once everything has been tuned and tweaked, Sterling’s fleet of 19 performance-optimized 737NGs will cut consumption by more than nine million litres of fuel a year.

“Sterling is a progressive and environmentally aware airline, and we’re pleased about their decision to equip the remainder of the fleet with Blended Winglet technology,” says CEO John Reimers from Aviation Partners Boeing.

Substantial Environmental Benefits

The investment in Blended Winglets for the entire fleet of Boeing 737NG aircraft will have considerable environmental benefits in the form of reduced fuel consumption and emissions as well as a reduction in noise at the time of take-off.

Four of Sterling’s seven 737-800 aircraft which has been equipped with Blended Winglets from new have proven the blended winglet concept by reducing fuel consumption by up to 5% with the consequent reduction in emissions . With utilization rates of more than 3,500 hours per year and an average mission length of over 2 hours, travelling to 40 destinations in Europe, Sterling is well placed to enjoy the full benefit of its new asset, Blended Winglets.

Sterling first off the ground in Denmark with Blended Winglet

The Blended Winglet systems from Aviation Partners are now in operation on more than 1,750 commercial planes, divided between more than 40 airlines, but Sterling Airlines is the first airline in Denmark to have introduced this technology.

“We’re pleased to be able to offer our customers a more environmentally friendly plane journey. We share our passengers’ concerns about CO2 emissions. That’s why we’ve chosen to make a milestone commitment to exploiting the technological capabilities that already exist, in order to reduce the pollution from our planes,” says CEO Almar Örn Hilmarsson from Sterling Airlines.

Sterling is Europe’s fourth-largest budget airline and the largest in Scandinavia offering both scheduled and package flights. Sterling has more than 80 routes in Europe and flies from Copenhagen, Billund, Aalborg, Oslo, Gothenburg and Stockholm. The company operates 25 Boeing 737-800, -700 and –500 type aircraft. Sterling is headquartered in Copenhagen and is part of Northern Travel Holding.
