Update at 1720GMT 09APR12
SriLankan Airlines has reversed its decision to cancel service to Italy from September 2012. According to report, Sri Lankan President has made a request asking the airline to continue operation. (Note the report mentioned Moscow to be dropped, which in fact is not true.)

As per 09APR12 GDS timetable and inventory display, Sri Lankan Airlines will continue to operate service to Italy and Switzerland during the month of May and June 2012. Further, the airline will continue to operate service to Italy after 09SEP12, the originate date scheduled to terminate. Service to Switzerland from 29AUG12 remains cancelled.
Schedule:
Colombo – Zurich
UL549 CMB1310 – 2010ZRH 332 135
UL550 ZRH2140 – 1120+1CMB 332 135
Colombo – Milan Malpensa – Rome – Colombo (Reservation on/after 09SEP12 is opened once again)
UL571 CMB0600 – 1240MXP1410 – 1530FCO1700 – 0610+1CMB 332 357
UL571 also operated by A340-300 on selected days
UL will continue to operate these services during the month of May and June 2012

High pressure forces SriLankan to take-off to Europe

SriLankan Airlines, in the wake of pressure exerted from other sectors of the economy, is compelled to continue flights to non profitable destinations during their off-peak season, an official said. SriLankan Airlines Chief Marketing Officer G.T. Jayaseelan, noting that this move to continue flights to Rome, Milan and Zurich would not be profitable for the national carrier. He told the Business Times that they had taken this "conscious decision," in the national interest.

Following representations made by stakeholders to the airline's management, it was compelled to continue their flights. In this respect they have taken initiatives to ascertain how they could recover (costs) without cancelling the flights, he said. Initially the airline announced it would be cancelling flights to Rome, Milan and Zurich since it was the off-peak season.

However, later it went back on this announcement since the travel and tourism industry, and exporters have called for flights to continue even during this period from these key destinations. The earlier announcement noted that the airline will cancel flights to Zurich, Switzerland during the off-peak from May 1 to June 26 and operate from June 27 until August 31, 2012.
