Singapore Airlines beats expectations with highest profit in seven years

SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Singapore Airlines Ltd (SIAL.SI) on Thursday topped market expectations by reporting a 148 percent rise in full-year net profit to the highest level since 2011, as passenger and cargo revenue rose and it benefited from a transformation program.

However, it warned of pressures from intense competition, costs and rising fuel prices despite strong bookings for the coming months and a continued stabilization in airfares.
The carrier, a benchmark for Asia’s premium airlines, made S$893 million ($665.6 million) in the year ended March, up from S$360 million a year earlier and 28 percent higher than the S$697 million average forecast from 14 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

A strong fourth quarter marked a turnaround from a year ago, when an operating loss by its flagship full-service airline led the company to launch a three-year transformation program designed to cut costs and boost revenue amid competition from Chinese and Middle Eastern rivals and low-cost carriers.

Singapore Airlines said transformation initiatives including a new revenue management program, a new airfare pricing structure and the establishment of a centralized pricing unit boosted revenue, while the airline also saved costs via more efficient use of fuel and waste reduction.
“The first year of the ... three-year transformation program has shown good progress,” the airline said. “The next two years of the program will further build on initiatives around enhancements to the customer experience, revenue growth and improvements in operational efficiency.”
Singapore Airlines’ group revenues rose 6.3 percent to S$15.8 billion for the full year, with improvements across all business lines, outpacing a 3.5 percent rise in costs, including an 18 percent increase in fuel.

The airline announced a final dividend of S$0.30 a share, nearly triple the S$0.11 paid a year earlier.
In the fourth quarter ended March 31, operating profit rose to S$214 million from S$27 million a year earlier, with the flagship full-service airline swinging from last year’s S$41 million loss to a S$137 million profit.
Average ticket prices, or yields, rose 1 percent in the fourth quarter, breaking a downward trend as the airline and its peers curbed discounting to counter rising fuel prices.

Oil prices have risen to the highest level in three and a half years, with Brent crude futures LCOc1 reaching $80 a barrel on Thursday.

Qualche dato in piu' per le compagnie del gruppo (SIA, SilkAir, Scoot, SIA Cargo e SIA Engineering):

SIA transformation effort lifts full-year profits

Singapore Airlines' full-year operating profit has surged by more than 80% to S$703 million ($524 million), but that for its SilkAir division more than halved to S$43 million.

The low-cost division Scoot generated a 15% profit rise, the company's newly-disclosed financial statement shows.
Singapore Airlines, in particular, turned around a fourth-quarter loss in 2016-17 to generate an operating profit of S$137 million for the three-month period.
It says its performance was lifted by early results from "transformation initiatives", adding that it benefited from implementing a new revenue-management system, centralised pricing operation, and a new fare-pricing structure.
Overall group revenues rose by 6.3% to S$15.8 billion but efficiency measures, including efforts to cut fuel-burn, kept the increase in expenditure to 3.5%, a total of S$14.7 billion.
Fuel costs rose by 4% to S$3.9 billion for the year.
SilkAir's revenues increased by 3%, but higher passenger numbers were offset by an 11.5% contraction in yield. Capacity hikes resulted in higher fuel and variable costs, and expenditure increased by nearly 10%.
Freight division SIA Cargo, which just managed to break even at operating level last year, turned in a healthier operating profit of S$148 million, as cargo yield and freight carriage improved.
Singapore Airlines' maintenance arm, SIA Engineering, generated a slightly higher operating profit of S$76 million – despite a S$9 million decline in revenues.

SilkAir To Undergo Major Cabin Product Upgrade And Be Merged Into SIA

18 May 2018 - Singapore Airlines’ (SIA) regional wing, SilkAir, is to undergo a significant investment programme to upgrade its cabin products as part of a multi-year initiative that will ultimately see it merged into SIA.

The programme will comprise investment of more than $100 million to upgrade the wholly owned subsidiary’s cabins with new lie-flat seats in Business Class, and the installation of seat-back in-flight entertainment systems in both Business Class and Economy Class. This will ensure closer product and service consistency across the SIA Group’s full-service network.

Aircraft cabin upgrades are expected to start in 2020 due to lead times required by seat suppliers, including to complete certification processes. The merger will take place only after a sufficient number of aircraft have been fitted with the new cabin products. Specific details will be announced progressively as the programme develops and timelines are finalised.

Consistent with ongoing efforts to optimise the SIA Group’s network, there will also be transfers of routes and aircraft between the different airlines in the portfolio.

“Singapore Airlines is one year into our three-year Transformation Programme and today’s announcement is a significant development to provide more growth opportunities and prepare the Group for an even stronger future,” said SIA CEO, Mr Goh Choon Phong.

“Importantly, it will be positive for our customers. It is another example of the major investment we are making to ensure that our products and services continue to lead the industry across short-, medium- and long-haul routes.”

SilkAir is the regional wing of Singapore Airlines, operating a fleet of 11 Airbus A320-family aircraft and 22 Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 aircraft. It is currently transitioning to an all-737 fleet, and serves 49 destinations in 16 countries.

It launched in 1989 as Tradewinds the Airline, initially focusing on holiday destinations in Southeast Asia. Renamed SilkAir in 1992, it expanded progressively across Asia in subsequent years as it evolved from a holiday resort airline to a full-fledged, full-service regional carrier.

Aggiungo che a fine Marzo SQ ha presentato la nuova J regional, che a me sembra migliore dei quella LH in quanto il letto segue il profilo del corpo senza costringere a posizioni innaturali.
