Singapore Airlines has become the first carrier to commit to the proposed stretched Boeing 787-10X, with an order for 30.
The carrier disclosed the agreement - which is conditional on a formal launch - as it firmed orders for 30 more Airbus A350-900s.
Delivery of the 787-10X would take place in the 2018-19 financial year. The carrier has not made an engine selection for the Boeing twinjets.
"It is conditional upon Boeing formally launching the 787-10X programme," the airline says. It values the combined aircraft agreement at $17billion.
Delivery of the A350s would take place in 2016-17. The carrier has placed options on a further 20 of the type, which could be converted to the larger -1000. A350s are only available with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.
"Today's aircraft orders are among the biggest in Singapore Airlines' history, helping to ensure that we retain our industry leading position," says chief executive Goh Choon Phong.
"These new aircraft will provide opportunities to grow and renew our fleet and enhance our network, benefiting customers by offering more travel options and the latest in-flight cabin products."

Singapore Airlines make 787-10 commitment, formal Boring launch right around d the corner
Singapore Airlines is the first airline to publicly announce that they have an agreement with Boeing to buy the next variant of the 787, the 787-10. Singapore Airlines has said that they intend to purchase 30 787-10s contingent on formal launch of the airplane by Boeing. SIA expects deliveries of the -10 to start in 2018-2019. They already have orders for 20 787-9 that will go to their low cost subsidiary Scoot.

I expect Boeing to formally launch the variant at the Paris Air Show next month and I also expect that the launch announcement will include launch orders from at least 2 if not more customers. One of these customers would most likely be IAG (British Airways) who exercised 18 787 options. Even though IAG didn't announce the version they will buy, it is widely expected to be the 787-10.

Qualche dettaglio in piu' (con video del 787):

Boeing-Airbus Split $17 Billion Singapore Wide-Body Jet Deal

Boeing Co (BA). and Airbus SAS shared a $17 billion order from Singapore Airlines Ltd. (SIA) for wide-body aircraft, highlighting the neck-and-neck race in a market where Airbus has managed to chip away at Boeing’s dominance.

The purchase is for 30 additional Airbus A350-900s and 30 Boeing Dreamliners, the first for the larger 787-10X variant, Singapore Airlines said today. Boeing deliveries are due to start in 2018, contingent on the Chicago-based company’s formal commitment to a model it has been marketing since November.

The deal is a boost for the Dreamliner, after a three-month global grounding strained customer ties and delayed progress on the -10X. Backing from Southeast Asia’s biggest carrier may help Boeing rebuild momentum after Airbus secured more orders for its largest A350 variant that it has aimed at customers previously loyal to Boeing’s popular 777 wide-body.
“Singapore Air is exactly the sort of cornerstone airline that the aircraft makers like to launch a plane,” said Robert Stallard, a London-based analyst at RBC Capital. “It’s a strong endorsement of the -10 business case.”
Singapore Airlines granted an option for 20 additional A350-900s, which carry a $287.7 million list price each. The carrier said it may convert those into orders for the larger -1000, which Airbus says is due in 2017 and costs $332.1 million.

Undisclosed Price

Boeing hasn’t yet published prices for the 787-10X, which would cost more than the smaller existing versions of the Dreamliner. The 787-8 retails for $206.8 million, and the 787-9 for $243.6 million.
The combined $17 billion price tag Singapore Airlines has put on the deal suggests the -10X costs about $279 million, though launch customers usually get even steeper discounts than those typical in the industry.
“These new aircraft will provide opportunities to grow and renew our fleet and enhance our network,” Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said in a statement, calling the orders among the biggest in the carrier’s history.
The deal with Airbus, with deliveries from 2016-17, is the third time the carrier has bought A350-900s and brings the total commitment to 70 jets. Singapore Airlines has not previously ordered the larger -1000 variant.

‘Very Pleased’

“We are certainly pleased that one of the world’s premier airlines has selected to buy 70 firm A350 aircraft,” John Leahy, head of sales at Airbus, said by phone.
Boeing has designed the 787-10X to replace its 777-200 and compete with the mid-sized Airbus A350, which is due for its first flight within weeks. The 787-10X does about 90 percent of all missions flown today by the smallest version of its 777 “and it does it significantly better,” Ray Conner, the chief of Boeing’s commercial airplanes unit, told investors last week.
“Someone stepped up early, and it will probably create some momentum,” said Howard Rubel, an analyst at Jefferies LLC in New York. “Singapore is one of those carriers that’s in the category of a very deliberate decision maker, one who sets a high standard for whatever it buys, and usually ends up in a position to be a leader in its market and others will follow.”
Rubel rates Boeing as a buy, and RBC Capital’s Stallard has an equivalent outperform rating on the shares.

Largest Variant

Adding the 787-10X, a so-called double stretch on the initial 787-8 in service now and the -9 due next year, may force Boeing to add Dreamliner production capacity, Conner said last week. The -10X would seat about 43 more than the 250 to 290 passengers on the -9, Boeing has said.
Airbus has booked 616 firm orders from 34 customers for its A350 family through April, including 110 firm commitments for the largest model, the -1000, with a deal from British Airways parentIAG SA (IAG) to take 18 not yet in the backlog. Boeing’s backlog on the Dreamliner is above 800 units.
That accord continues a turnaround for the largest Airbus twin-engine wide-body, which saw orders shrink to 62 last year after Etihad Airways PJSC canceled six.
The deal comes after Singapore Airlines said in October it would buy five Airbus A380 superjumbos, for a total of 24 with 19 already delivered, and double a commitment to 40 A350-900s to expand its fleet and add fuel-efficient planes. Singapore Airlines was also the first airline to fly the A380 superjumbo.

More Planes

The carrier is buying new aircraft after lower passenger and cargo fares pushed the company into a wider fourth-quarter operating loss. CEO Goh is adding more planes and has upgraded business-class cabins as he faces increasing competition from Emirates and other airlines expanding in Southeast Asia.
Singapore Airlines said it will make an engine selection later for the 787-10X, with offerings fromGeneral Electric Co (GE). and Rolls-Royce Holdings Plc (RR/). The plane will be used on medium-range routes, and the A350 on medium to long flights, the carrier said. The A350 comes only with Rolls-Royce engines.

The carrier said it may convert those into orders for the larger -1000".
