Sciopero piloti Air France

Air France unions call for four-day strike from June 23

PARIS (Reuters) - Unions at Air France on Friday called for a four-day strike starting June 23 over a continuing pay dispute that prompted the resignation of parent company Air France-KLM’s chief executive last month.

The dispute has already resulted in 15 days of walkouts this year, costing Europe’s second-largest carrier by revenue up to 400 million euros ($470.68 million).

As the company hunts for a new CEO to replace outgoing Jean-Marc Janaillac, interim non-executive chairwoman Anne-Marie Couderc had sought to placate the unions earlier on Friday.

In a letter seen by Reuters, Couderc told the unions that Air France management would next week offer new measures aimed at ending the conflict.

The French government, already locked in a battle over reforms at state railway operator SNCF, has said it will not bail out Air France.

Last month an adviser to French President Emmanuel Macron said the government had no plans to reduce its 14.3 percent stake in Air France-KLM but might not maintain this level forever.

In a brief statement Air France-KLM said the strike was not compatible with concern for the future of Air France and confirmed that Couderc would meet union representatives on June 14 and come up with proposals.

Air France Makes ‘Bizarre’ Snooze Room Offer to Defiant Staff

  • Pilot union representatative dismisses management proposal
  • Workers have called for fresh round of walkouts June 23-26

After an attempt to play hard ball with defiant staff failed to end a bitter labor conflict, Air France is now trying a softer approach. The embattled carrier’s latest offer to workers: more rooms for rest breaks.

At meetings with union representatives, who have called for a fresh round of strikes starting next week, management pledged to spend more to improve working conditions. The French arm of Air France-KLM said Thursday it would renovate and add staff rooms at Orly airport near Paris and take a “new approach to staff concerns and dialogue.”

The move didn’t go down well with at least two unions. “It’s a joke,” SPAF pilot union representative Gregoire Aplincourt said by phone. “I don’t see how I can come back to pilots and ask them to lift the strike with these bizarre promises.”

Air France-KLM is still reeling from the resignation last month of Chief Executive Officer Jean-Marc Janaillac, who had staked his job on workers accepting his final offer on pay in a company-wide referendum. After they rejected it, the Paris-based carrier appointed an interim management team and unions decided on a new round of strikes June 23-26. Aplincourt said there would be a joint response to the latest proposals, but for the moment the plan for renewed action stands.

Summer Strikes

Air France-KLM’s board won’t resume talks with unions before new top executives are appointed, the company said in its statement. In an interview published by Les Echos, interim non-executive Chairman Anne-Marie Couderc was quoted as saying the company wants to pick a new CEO by July 15 and that the board won’t issue a mandate to negotiate on wages before the new management is in place.
Unions had expected the interim management would at least offer a 3.65 percent wage increase for 2018 and 2019, an option that had been under discussion in the past few days, according to Aplincourt, who said this was getting closer to workers’ demands.
Instead, the promises for staff rooms, new printers and parking spots “aren’t up to the challenge,” CGT union representative Vincent Salles said. “We’re puzzled by these proposals.”

Next week’s planned walkouts would escalate a costly labor conflict just as the busy summer travel season in Europe gets underway. Already, 15 days of strikes that began Feb. 22 have cost the company more than 300 million euros.

The 10 unions representing pilots, cabin crew and ground personnel demanded a pay raise of at least 5 percent this year, as they seek a share of Air France-KLM’s 2017 profit increase. Management has refused, citing the need to continue investing, including by buying new planes. The former CEO proposed a 7 percent increase over four years tied to performance.
A majority of employees rejected the offer in May, triggering Janaillac’s departure and replacement with an interim team that doesn’t have a mandate to negotiate with unions or grant pay increases beyond what Janaillac had offered.

I sindacati minacciano ulteriori 15 giorni di sciopero

On Sunday, Philippe Evain, head of the powerful French SNPL pilots’ union, threatened in an interview with Le Parisien newspaper 15 more days of strikes if the new Air France KLM chief executive did not restart talks over pay conditions.KLM on Monday said its talks with Dutch pilots union VNV over better working conditions are in “a difficult phase”.

Dutch pilots would consider going on strike if KLM fails to come up with better offers before Friday, Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf said, citing a letter from the union to its members.
Air France-KLM has been hunting for a new boss since the abrupt departure of CEO Jean-Marc Janaillac in May after staff rejected a pay offer aimed at ending the strikes which have so far cost the company 335 million euros (£298.67 million).

The French state is the biggest shareholder in Air France-KLM with a stake of about 14 percent. Delta Airlines (DAL.N) and China Eastern Airlines (600115.SS) each hold 8.8 percent.
A senior French pilot on Air France KLM’s board of directors also said this weekend that the next CEO must not be beholden to external interests, as he criticised the possible choice of Air Canada’s chief operating officer as preferred candidate.

Le Monde newspaper last week reported that Air France-KLM’s nominations committee had picked Air Canada (AC.TO) chief operating officer Benjamin Smith as its top candidate for CEO.
Air France KLM has said only that no decision has been made yet, while Air Canada has made no comment on the matter.

Maretta in AF (for a change...)
