Europe: Air Traffic Controllers Strike to Cause Widespread Disruptions (10th October 2013)
Thursday, 03 October 2013
Flight disruptions are expected in numerous European countries due to strike action by air traffic controllers aligned with the Air Traffic Controllers European Unions Coordination (ATCEUC).
To date, affiliated unions in France, Germany, Portugal and Spain have confirmed their participation in the 'ATCEUC Action Day'. According to reports, these will involve work stoppages from 04:00 to 18:00 GMT in France; from 06:00 to 08:00, and then again from 14:00 to 16:00 GMT in Portugal; as well as from 07:00 to 09:00, and then again from 15:00 to 17:00 GMT in Spain. This is likely to impact significantly on Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands as the mentioned countries are responsible for air traffic management services in these countries. Although ATCEUC has called on its 14,000 members throughout Europe to participate in the strike action, it is currently unclear if, and to what extent, affiliated air traffic controllers in Albania, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Macedonia, Malta, Montenegro, Norway, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovenia and Switzerland will participate. Although the minimum legal requirements for service provision will be maintained in France, Germany, Portugal and Spain, and aviation authorities are expected to implement contingency plans to minimise disruptions on the date, the upcoming strike action is likely to result in significant and widespread flight disruptions and cancellations throughout the regions due to the integrated nature of Europe's airspace management system.
