Ryanair has asked for several permits to fly from Barcelona airport, which have yet to be confirmed, although everything being put in place confirms that the low cost airline will operate soon from El Prat, according to an airline source.
The company, which has an aggressive price and trade policy, has long expressed an interest in operating from Barcelona airport, but with some conditions, reduction of tariffs which have been rejected by Aena.
The airport operator has always said that all airlines are welcome to El Prat, but with the same conditions as their competitors. Ryanair's operation in El Prat will be done with the same conditions as other airlines operating from Barcelona airport, such as is currently the situation at Barajas airport where it has been present since 2006 and is already the second largest airline in volume of passengers, behind Iberia.
According to ‘Expansion’ newspaper published today, Ryanair has asked permission of flights (solts) to operate between Barcelona and Madrid, which would compete for the route with more passengers from Spain, and also for connecting Barcelona with Paris Beauvais airport, Ibiza, Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, but it has until Jan. 28 to confirm these or other destinations.
With the arrival of Ryanair at El Prat, the airline would enter into direct competition with Iberia, but especially with Vueling and Spanair, which are based in Barcelona and are the first and second airline of El Prat, respectively.
The Irish company already flies from Girona and Reus airports and will shortly start operations from the airport Lleida-Alguaire, which opens tomorrow, with flights to Frankfurt and Milan from April.
