Stichting Airport Coordination Netherlands (SACN), the organization responsible for the allocation of take off and landing slots at Dutch airports, has awarded nine daily slots at Amsterdam Schiphol airport to Ryanair (FR, Dublin Int'l).
Speaking to De Telegraaf newspaper, the managing director of SACN, Caroline Ditvoorst, said that if taken up, Ryanair could use the slots for commercial flights beginning this winter. The Irish LCC has until August 31 to decide whether or not to use the allocation.
In October last year, Ryanair's Chief Marketing Officer, Kenny Jacobs, confirmed the carrier's interest in Amsterdam which dates back to 2013. Despite applying for slots two years ago, Jacobs said a then lack of available aircraft had forced Ryanair to defer plans to enter the Dutch capital city's market.
Rival easyJet (U2, London Luton), which already operates a base at Schipol, has also been allocated additional slots with plans to use them to open up new routes to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion, Milan Linate, Grenoble, Tenerife Sur, Lyon St. Exupéry, and Salzburg this winter.
