Dubai 2007: Oman firms deal for five A330s
By Graham Dunn

Middle Eastern carrier Oman Air has firmed up its deal with Airbus for three A330-300s and a pair of A330-200.

The carrier earlier this year revealed it had signed a letter of intent to take up to five A330s to support its resumption of long-haul services.

It has now signed a firm contract for five A330s with Airbus. No engine choice has yet been made.

Oman Air Ziad Al-Haremi says: "Our decision to buy the Airbus A330 all came down to the suitability of the aircraft with our long term strategy to operate an efficient and reliable fleet with proven operating costs."

The carrier has previously said it would take delivery of the aircraft in 2009, though it has leased in Airbus A330 and Boeing 767 capacity to enable it resume long-haul flights sooner. These are due to begin at the end of the month with new flights from Muscat to London Gatwick and Bangkok.

Un'altro lessor medio orientale, LCAL, ordina altri 6 787

Dubai 2007: Lessor LCAL orders another six 787s
By Graham Dunn

Dedicated Boeing 787 lessor LCAL has ordered a further six of the type, taking its overall commitment to the twin-jet to 21.

LCAL, which placed its first order for 787s two years ago, will take the additional aircraft in 2014. Deliveries of the 15 787s it previously had on order are due to run from 2009 to 2013.

The six new aircraft were previously attributed on Boeing's orders and deliveries books to an unidentified customer.

LCAL president and CEO Steve Clarke says the lessor has not made an engine selection for the latest batch, but intends to offer customers a choice of both engine types. It has already opted for Rolls-Royce Trent 1000s for some of its earlier 787s, and is negotiating with GE to equip some of its aircraft with GEnx engines.

The latest six aircraft are 787-8s, although Clarke says LCAL has the option to switch most of these to 787-9s.

“We have some early positions on the -9 for 2011-12. With the exception of our first six, all our aircraft have the option to switch between them,” he says.

“In the space of two years we have grown our portfolio three and a half times. With early deliveries, LCAL is uniquely positioned to competitively enter the leasing market with the most highly-demanded product in the commercial aircraft world.”

He adds that the company intends to remain a dedicated 787 lessor, until such a time as a new product that fits its criteria is launched.

“When another type – maybe a 737 successor [arrives] – we will certainly look forward to being an early customer. But until that time we remain a 787 dedicated lessor,” he says.

Royal Jordanian Sign Order for Two 787s

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Nov. 12, 2007 -- Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Royal Jordanian, the country's national carrier, today signed an order for two additional 787 Dreamliners at the Dubai Air Show. The airline also has announced an agreement to take two more 787s on lease from CIT Aerospace.

Royal Jordanian announced an initial order for two 787s, and its intention to acquire a total of 12 787s, at the World Economic Forum held on Jordan's Dead Sea this past May. With today's announcement, Royal Jordanian has a total of four airplanes on order with Boeing. The two additional 787s will be added to Boeing's Orders & Deliveries Web site at the next regular scheduled update.

Lee Monson, Boeing Commercial Airplanes vice president of Sales for the Middle East and Africa, and Royal Jordanian President and CEO Samer A. Majali were on hand to announce the order for the additional 787s. Royal Jordanian was the first Middle East carrier to order Boeing's fast-selling 787.

"We value our relationship with Boeing and are pleased to have taken another major step towards achieving our fleet replacement goals with the 787," said Majali.

"Royal Jordanian's confidence in the 787 is based on a sound strategy of updating its long-haul fleet with an airplane that will provide great efficiency and superb economics," said Monson. "We value our relationship with Royal Jordanian and will continue to meet its expectations as we work together on the airline's fleet transition."

With Royal Jordanian's order for Boeing's 787, 51 customers around the world have ordered a total of 738 Dreamliners, further extending Boeing's record-breaking pace of orders for the launch of a commercial airplane program.

BREAKING NEWS: Qantas orders up to 188 narrowbodies
By Nicholas Ionides

Australia’s Qantas Airways is to acquire up to 188 more narrowbody Airbus and Boeing aircraft through lease and purchase arrangements.

The Oneworld alliance carrier says the aircraft will be used “to support the further growth of its two brands, Qantas and Jetstar, in Australia and Asia”.

It says it will acquire 68 Airbus A320s and A321s and take 40 options and purchase rights. It will also order 31 Boeing 737-800s and take 49 options and purchase rights.</u>

“The firm aircraft will be delivered over a six-year period, while options secured additional delivery slots through to 2017,” it says, adding that A321 deliveries will begin in early 2008 and 737 deliveries will start early in 2009.

Qantas is an existing operator of 737-800s, which it uses on mainline domestic routes, while low-cost subsidiary Jetstar operates A320s on domestic and short-haul international routes. It does not currently operate A321s.

A Jetstar spokesman says 50 of the 68 firm-ordered Airbus aircraft will be purchased and 18 will be leased. As with its 23 existing A320s, the additional aircraft will be powered by International Aero Engines V2500s.

DUBAI 2007: Start-up Nile Air signs for nine A321s, plans 2008 launch
By Max Kingsley-Jones

Egyptian start-up Nile Air plans to launch operations early next year with leased Airbus A321s, ahead of receiving the first of nine similar aircraft ordered directly from the manufacturer in 2012.

The Cairo-based airline signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus today at the Dubai air show for nine A321s. No engine selection was announced.

Saudi Arabia-based Al Tayyar Travel Group will be the majority shareholder in Nile Air and the company’s president Dr Nasser Al-Tayyar says the ownership structure of the airline is currently being finalised: “The National Bank of Egypt will hold a minority stake, and 30% will be publicly held. We are also finalising arrangements with a strategic partner.”

Al-Tayyar says that his company is the “biggest agent moving tourists between Saudi Arabia and Egypt”.

Discussions are currently underway with several lessors regarding the lease of two A321s for delivery in the second quarter of 2008. The airline will operate these, and possibly a third aircraft, ahead of the delivery of its first ordered A321 in the first quarter of 2012, says Al-Tayyar.

Nile Air will configure its A321s in a two class layout with around 190 seats. The aircraft will serve the Saudi, Gulf and Middle East markets from its Cairo base, says Al-Tayyar.

Planned destinations include Dammam, Jeddah, Medina and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia as well as Bahrain, Dubai, Doha, and Kuwait.

Incredibile l'ordine di Qantas, considerando i 99 ordini fermi (senza opzioni) pianificati in consegna dall'inizio dell'anno prossimo saranno consegnati in soli 6 anni.

Dubai 2007: UAE Sheik signs for Aerion supersonic business jet
By Graham Warwick

Aerion has taken an order for its supersonic business jet from Sheik Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, the leader of Ajman, smallest member state of the United Arab Emirates.

Sheik Rashid, head of the Ajman municipality and planning department, signed a letter of intent for the $80 million aircraft at the Dubai air show.

Zurich, Switzerland-based ExecuJet is acting as sales agent for Aerion outside the Americas, and is offering 40 early delivery positions to customers in return for $250,000 refundable deposits.

Aerion is in discussions with candidate aircraft manufacturers to serve as programme integrator for the SSBJ and says it anticipates an agreement in the first half of 2018, allowing the aircraft to enter service in 2014.

Seating eight to 12 passengers, and with a range exceeding 7,400km (4,000nm), the Aerion SSBJ will cruise at speeds up to Mach 1.6. The aircraft will be able to cruise at up to M1.15 over land, where permitted, without causing a boom, says Aerion

In the continental USA, where civil supersonic flight over land is prohibited, the aircraft will cruise at just below Mach 1, a speed at which Aerion says the natural laminar-flow aerodynamics will offer economics comparable to existing large business jets.

DUBAI 2007: Hong Kong's C Jet to be first VIP A350 customer

Hong Kong’s business aviation operation C Jet is set to become the first customer for a VIP version of the Airbus A350 XWB, having also just ordered an Airbus Corporate Jetliner.

Airbus has designated the executive A350 XWB as the ‘Prestige’. C Jet chairman Tony Chan says the aircraft will be “tremendous” owing to its range and spacious cabin.

“It will be the VIP widebody of the future,” he adds. The A350 XWB is currently only available with Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines.

C Jet also ordered an ACJ during the Dubai air show, which will be fitted with CFM International CFM56 engines. It will be operated on behalf of C Jet by BAA Jet Management, which previously placed orders for an ACJ and an executive A318.
