Qantas, Emirates seal 'extensive' alliance

British Airways, Qantas to end JSA after Emirates hook-up

By Alan Dron | September 6, 2012

British Airways (BA) and Qantas (QF) will terminate their long-running revenue-sharing agreement on UK-Australia routes following the Australian flag-carrier’s decision to embark on a new global partnership arrangement with Emirates Airline (EK) (ATW Daily News, Sept. 6).
The existing BA-QF Joint Services Agreement (JSA) has enabled the two companies to share revenues and costs since 1995. BA’s parent, International Airlines Group (IAG), said the JSA will end March 31, 2013—the day before the new QF-EK agreement starts.
“We’re ending the joint business on amicable terms and support Qantas’ decision to work with Emirates,” IAG chief executive Willie Walsh said. “The world has changed since 1995 when the joint business started. This is a small part of our overall network and this move fits in with changes in our global strategy.” IAG was already talking to several airlines about replacement arrangements, particularly for services into Asia, Walsh said.
Despite ending their agreement, BA and QF will continue to work together as part of the oneworld alliance and through bilateral codeshares, he added. “The good relationship that we have with Qantas CEO Alan Joyce and his team will continue through our joint membership of oneworld.
“Over the past 17 years, the joint business with British Airways has been central to the Qantas network,” QF CEO Alan Joyce said. “However, global operating conditions have changed and partnership with Emirates is the right strategy for Qantas.”

Singapore shrugs off Qantas-Emirates alliance
AFP | Fri, Sep 7 2012

SINGAPORE - Singapore's Changi Airport said Friday that it will remain a major hub for Qantas and other carriers despite the Australian airline's decision to shift its European connection point to Dubai.
Qantas said Thursday that flights from Australia to London and Frankfurt, and vice-versa, would stop running through Singapore from April 2013 as part of a new global alliance with the Dubai-based Emirates.

The Changi Airport Group said that despite the move Qantas was planning to step up connections between Australia and Singapore.
"We understand that Qantas faces challenges in its international business and needs to restructure its network," the Changi Airport Group said in an emailed response to queries from AFP.
Changi currently serves Qantas routes between Singapore and five Australian cities - Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane and Adelaide - with a total of 90 flights per week.
The airport, which is still being expanded, serves about 100 airlines operating 6,200 weekly flights to 220 cities in 60 countries.
A spokesman for Singapore Airlines - which competes with both Qantas and Emirates - declined to comment on the new alliance.
"However, speaking entirely in general terms, we have faced competition since day one, so it is not unfamiliar to us," the spokesman told AFP, adding that the airline uses alliances to boost its network and offer connections for passengers.
Shukor Yusof, an aviation analyst with Standard & Poor's Equity Research, said Changi remains competitive as an aviation hub despite the impending loss of Qantas' Europe-bound services.
"It's not a huge blow. Changi will still remain an active participant more than anything else," he said, citing the Asian travel boom boosted by rising income levels and the emergence of regional budget carriers.
Some analysts, however, cautioned that the Qantas-Emirates deal could signal more serious competition in the longer term between Singapore and Dubai.
"This is a very bad sign for Singapore," said Jonathan Galaviz, managing director of business consultancy Galaviz & Co. which specialises in Asia.
"Singapore's position as an airline hub in Asia is going to be strongly challenged by Dubai over the coming years," he told AFP.
Data from Sydney-based industry monitor Centre for Aviation showed Qantas accounts for 8.2 per cent of Changi's air traffic measured on an available-seat-kilometre (ASK) basis, second only to Singapore Airlines.
"Qantas is the second largest carrier by ASKs at Singapore Changi and while it may seek to increase local Australia-Asia traffic, Changi will lose Qantas' two daily A380 and single 747-400 service from Singapore to Europe," it added.
Qantas chief executive Alan Joyce said the carrier remains focused on serving Asian routes including Singapore.
"Qantas will increase dedicated capacity to Singapore, and re-time flights to Singapore and Hong Kong to enable many more 'same day' connections across Asia," he said Thursday at the launch of the Emirates alliance.

Qantas to introduce chauffeur service
AsiaOne | Fri, Sep 7 2012

Qantas on Friday announced a new chauffeur service for its customers as part of its global airline partnership with Emirates.
The door-to-door service, Chauffeur Drive, will be offered to Qantas passengers travelling in First and Business on flights more than 12 hours long.

The airline plans to start the service in April 2013.
Chauffeur Drive will be available to the airline's customers travelling on flights between Australia and London, Dubai, Los Angeles, Dallas, New York, Santiago and Johannesburg, it said in a statement to the media.
Passengers will be collected in a luxury vehicle and driven to the airport to meet their flight. Upon arrival at their destination, they will be met by another chauffeur service and driven to their hotel, office or home.
Travellers connecting via a domestic flight from Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Hobart, Perth, Sydney or Melbourne to a Qantas international flight will be also be entitled to the service.
The offer also extends to Qantas customers travelling from Auckland, Christchurch and Wellington to Australia to connect to an international flight.
Subject to regulatory approval, Qantas announced on Thursday that it will form a global alliance with Emirates and move its hub for European flights to Dubai from Singapore in a bid to stem losses. Last month, it announced a net loss of Aus$244 million (S$310 million), reported AFP.
The airlines’ frequent flyer programs will also be aligned when the partnership gets the green light.

Qantas, Air France to end codeshare after Emirates tie-up

By Victoria Moores | September 11, 2012

Qantas (QF) and Air France (AF) will end their codeshare agreement April 1, in a decision triggered by QF’s exclusive global partnership with Emirates (EK) announced last week (ATW Daily News, Sept. 6).
QF and AF have codeshared since December 2004 on flights from Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) to Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney. The agreement covers 60 weekly frequencies, including 38 via Singapore and 22 via Hong Kong.
QF last week also announced plans to end its long-standing joint services agreement with British Airways because of the EK deal (ATW Daily News, Sept. 6).
“The agreement between AF and QZ should, at the request of Qantas, cease from April 1, 2013,” an AF spokesman said, adding that while AF is considering possible alternatives, AF-operated services between CDG and Australia are not currently under consideration.
AF offers three Australian destinations—Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney—via Guangzhou in a codeshare agreement with SkyTeam partner China Southern Airlines (CZ). Sister carrier KLM also serves five Australian destinations—Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney—from Amsterdam in partnership with CZ and Malaysia Airlines.

Il prossimo 8 ottobre i boss di OW e AA annunceranno il nuovo membro di Oneworld

Oneworld will hold an event announcing a "significant membership development" on 8 October, coming amidst widely-reported discussions with Qatar Airways about joining the alliance.

The event will be held in New York and includes Bruce Ashby, chief executive of Oneworld, Tom Horton, chairman and chief executive of American Airlines, and Willie Walsh, chief executive of International Airlines Group (IAG), according to documents obtained by Flightglobal.

Qatar has been linked to joining one of the big three alliances in the near future.

Snagging the Doha-based carrier would be a coup for Oneworld. It would be the first of the big three alliances to include one of the major Gulf airlines and would ratchet up pressure on SkyTeam and Star to forge partnerships with either Emirates or Etihad.

Oneworld already includes Royal Jordanian as a member and SriLankan Airlines is slated to become a member in late 2013.

Qatar declines to comment on whether it is joining Oneworld.

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/oneworld-to-announce-new-member-qatar-expected-377073/

E ancora...

Following the tie-up between Emirates and Qantas earlier in the month there were suggestions that British Airways and the Doha airline could create a similiar deal - but that was dismissed by Qatar's CEO Akbar Al Baker.

Now reports in the US media suggest that the tie up will instead be through the alliance. Qatar would be the first of the major Gulf carriers to join an alliance. Emirates has always fervantly resisted the alliance route believing it would cost them customers. Etihad has created its own mini-alliance through aquisition and code share deals.

Flightglobal reported today that an event announcing a "significant membership development" will take place on 8 October in New York. The online news service said it had seen documents that said the meeting would include Bruce Ashby, chief executive of Oneworld, Tom Horton, chairman and chief executive of American Airlines, and Willie Walsh, chief executive of International Airlines Group (IAG).

Qatar will not comment on the alliance issue. If the announcement is made as predicted, Qatar will join Royal Jordanian as a Oneworld member

Australia regulator backs Qantas-Emirates deal

Qantas Airways has been given initial approval from Australia's competition authority for its proposed alliance with Dubai-based Emirates.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said the benefits of the tie-up - such as co-ordinating ticket prices and schedules - would outweigh the reduced competition.

It will make a final decision in March.

Qantas and Emirates announced their alliance plans back in September. Neither is investing in the other.

"The ACCC considers that the alliance is likely to result in material, although not substantial, benefits to Australian consumers," ACCC chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.

"The main benefit arising from the alliance is an improved product and service offering by the two airlines to their customers.

Qantas is seeking the alliance as it aims to turnaround its loss-making international service.

"A key objective is to make Qantas International strong and viable, and bring it back to profitability," said Alan Joyce, chief executive of Qantas.

"This partnership will help us do that."

The tie-up with Emirates will see Qantas end its existing relationship with British Airways.
