Cathay Pacific has temporarily grounded its fleet of 48 Airbus A350 aircraft for inspections following an unprecedented engine component failure that forced a flight to Zurich to return to Hong Kong.
The airline has cancelled 24 return flights, affecting routes to Singapore, Bangkok, Tokyo, Taipei, and Osaka. The inspections revealed multiple aircraft requiring component replacements, leading to extended maintenance for some planes.
Cathay is coordinating with aviation authorities and manufacturers Rolls-Royce and Airbus.
The incident has also impacted Rolls-Royce’s stock, which dropped 6.47% following the news.

EASA is requiring inspections of all Trent XWB97s, which power the Airbus A350-1000. The emergency airworthiness directive affects 87 aircraft across 8 airlines. Action comes after a Cathay Pacific A350’s damaged fuel hose led to an inflight engine fire and inflight shut down.

European regulators have widened the number of Rolls-Royce Trent engines potentially affected by a fuel hose defect, in an updated safety directive issued 19 September following an engine fire on a Cathay Pacific Airbus A350-1000 earlier this month.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) has also identified a “specific cleaning process” during engine refurbishment as a likely cause of the damage to the manifold fuel hose on the Trent XWB-97 engine powering the Cathay jet.
