ATWOnline onboard the A380

The A380 landed in the US for the first time yesterday, at New York JFK's Terminal 1, following a quiet flight from Frankfurt that took 45 min. less than the 7 hr. 45 min. scheduled flight time.
The proving flight left FRA at 9 a.m. with 458 passengers, 23 cabin crew, four pilots--two from Airbus and two from Lufthansa--and two flight test engineers. Takeoff weight was 481 tonnes, about 60 tonnes lighter than the type's MTOW. Fuel weighed 135 tonnes at takeoff. ATWOnline was a guest of Lufthansa Technik and witnessed a fast and easy boarding process through three doors and two decks. Total boarding time was 35 min.
The aircraft, in Airbus livery but with Lufthansa crew, service and flight number, had a three-class layout, with first class and economy seats on the main deck and business class and economy on the upper deck. Economy featured a 10-abreast (3-4-3) seat configuration and 33 in. pitch. LH, which has ordered 15 A380s plus 10 options, will operate the aircraft with three classes, although it intends to place first and business on the upper deck and keep the entire main deck for economy.
The A380, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 900s, was smooth and quiet inside the cabin, especially on takeoff and landing.
