Prague, July 27 (CTK) - Passenger numbers at Prague's international airport Ruzyne rose by nine percent on the year to a record 5.58 million in the first half of this year, airport operator Letiste Praha spokeswoman Eva Krejci told CTK Friday.
The number of take-offs and landings rose by six percent to nearly 84,000. The company's management expect full-year passenger numbers to top 12.4 million.
Low-cost airlines, which raised passenger numbers by almost a third, were a major contributor to the growth in the number of passengers cleared at the airport. Their market share in Ruzyne increased to 23 percent.
The number of passengers transported by traditional airlines rose by three percent. National air carrier Czech Airlines (CSA) was the leader with 43 percent of passengers cleared at Prague airport.
The number of transit passengers rose by six percent on the year, which the airport management attributed especially to cooperation with the airline alliance SkyTeam. It resulted in the launch of a new Delta Air Lines flight to the world's largest airport in the US city of Atlanta, for instance.
The largest number of passengers flew to Great Britain, Germany and Italy in the first half, with London, Paris and Frankfurt traditionally the most popular destinations.
Thanks to new regular flights, a significant growth was registered for passengers travelling from Prague to Switzerland (52 percent), Italy (37 percent) and Spain (31 percent). Milan became the destination with the biggest increase of 40 percent.
Ruzyne is the largest airport in the ten new EU member states. It is used by 51 airlines that provide connection to 120 cities all around the world.
With 2006 net earnings of Kc1bn, Letiste Praha is one of the most successful state-run businesses in the Czech Republic. The firm should be transformed still this year into a joint-stock company that the state will subsequently sell.
