Lufthansa Group to phase out 38 aircraft in 2011
Lufthansa Group will phase out of a total of 38 aircraft by the end of 2011, including "accelerating" the removal of Boeing 737 Classics.
Chairman and chief executive, Dr Christoph Franz, said at a press conference announcing the group's nine-month results, that most aircraft leaving the fleet are Avro RJ85 regional jets and Boeing 737-300s and -500s. According to Flightglobal's Ascend database, Lufthansa Cityline operates seven Avro RJ85s and Lufthansa a total of 57 Boeing 737s.
Franz said nine long-haul aircraft, including Boeing 747-400s and Airbus A340-300s, will also be phased out.
Following a considerable deterioration in macro-indicators and its bookings outlook in September, the group adjusted its growth plans and reduced the scheduled capacity of its passenger operation in the winter to 4% from 12%.
Plans for capacity growth in 2012 have also been cut to 3%, down from the 9% originally planned.
