Altra news interessante prima dell'inizio dello show:

CFM: New Chinese Commercial Jet (COMAC C919) on Track for 2016

COMAC_C919_image_503x335.jpg

PARIS – Jet engine manufacturer CFM International says it expects to see major orders for its products at this week’s Paris International Air Show and that work on the forthcoming Chinese C919 commercial jetliner remains on track for a 2016 service date.
CFM, a joint venture between General Electric Co. (GE 18.49 ↑0.27%) and France’s Safran SA, is locked in a battle with rival Pratt & Whitney (UTX 84.57 ↑0.26%) to sell airlines on the latest generation of fuel-efficient, lower emission jet engines that also promise significant maintenance savings. Company officials say they expect at least 16 new orders from airlines during the busy week.
Late last year, European plane-maker Airbus (EADSY 30.55 ↑0.39%) said it would offer a re-vamped version of its stalwart single-aisle A320 equipped with either CFM or Pratt engines. The engines differ vastly in design; Pratt is offering the Geared Turbofan while CFM has labeled its new product the Leap-X.
Pratt, a unit of United Technologies Corp., which had been largely out of the commercial engine game for 15 years, jumped to an early lead with orders for its new Geared Turbofan engine. But last week , CFM’s Leap-X scored an order for 30 A320neo jets from low-fare carrier Virgin America, and executives promise more to come this week.
Asked about Pratt’s nascent lead in A320neo orders at a Sunday press briefing, Jean-Paul Ebanga, president and chief executive of CFM said, “Ask me that same question on Friday; actually by Wednesday would be ok.”
A major A320neo order from Malaysian carrier AirAsia is expected to be announced at the Air Show, and would be a big win for CFM if they’re selected by the airline. The first A320neo is expected to enter service in 2016. Airbus is a unit of European Aeronautic Defence & Space Co.
Mr. Ebanga said the company was in discussions with Boeing Co. (BA 74.16 ↑0.20%) about the future of the 737, which the Chicago-based aerospace giant continues to ponder, much to the consternation of the industry. The 737 is currently powered by the CFM56 engine. Boeing has said it is talking with CFM, Pratt and Rolls-Royce (BMW 63.90 ↑1.27%) Group PLC (0.07 ↑0.00%) about the future of the plane, which could include a re-engine program similar to Airbus’s or a brand new jet.
It’s likely CFM and Pratt are both working hard to sell Boeing on versions of their new technology that can be adapted for an upgraded 737.
CFM officials said work continues on incremental upgrades to CFM56, versions of which power current 737 and A320s, and they are on track to realize new fuel efficiencies for current models.
Separately, the company said work on China’s first entry into the crowded narrow-body jet market remains on track for a 2016 entry into service.
COMAC, the Chinese firm building the new C919, chose CFM’s Leap-X to power the new jet. Despite being COMAC’s first foray into building a mainline jet, Mr. Ebanga said the development program was on track. CFM won the contract to be the sole Western engine provider on the C919, and he said a home-grown Chinese engine isn’t a near-term threat.
“We’re not really concerned with intellectual property in China,” says Mr. Ebanga. “We know how to integrate with them without transferring technology. We know how to play that game and protect our property.”
COMAC last year announced firm orders for 100 jets.

PARIS 2011: CFM reports successful LEAP eCore 2/LPT tests before bumper order week

cfm_leap-x_mascot_jpgdb825f3311763a9b2430303d35123721.JPG

June 18, 2011
CFM’s progress on its LEAP engine family has been boosted by the testing of its second development core, eCore 2, and the low-pressure turbine (LPT) plus the anticipation of significant order announcements during the 49th Paris Air Show this week.

The company is planning four order announcements each day from Monday to Thursday, though not all will be for LEAP engines. However, when asked about the lead taken by the competing Pratt & Whitney PW1100G on the A320neo programme, CFM executive vice-president Chaker Chahrour replied, “Ask me that question on Thursday.”

On the technology aspects, Chahrour went on to note that the eCore 2 went to test on 24 May, slightly ahead of schedule. “Unlike eCore 1, this is the full-up LEAP configuration. And we’ve had outstanding results so far,” he declared.

Fellow EVP Olivier Savin added, “Our ultra high-efficiency LPT rig also began testing in May and has also exceeded the design specifications.”

The LEAP engine family, with the LEAP-X1C on the COMAC C919 and the LEAP-X1A for the Airbus A320neo family, is scheduled to enter service in 2016

With much focus currently on the LEAP family, Chahrour reminded his audience that the company is about to put the CFM56-7BE into service in the enhanced Boeing 737NG family. “The engine will provide an extra 1% better fuel burn with Boeing adding 1% via the aeroplane design, so the aircraft family will have 2% better fuel burn overall,” Chahrour explained. “Aircraft certification is imminent and we’re starting to ship the -7BE engines out of the factory now.”

Savin reported that on the A320 family there is a similar story. “We will introduce another Product Improvement Package (PIP) on the CFM56-5B later this year,” he remarked. “The PIP will lower sfc on the -5B by 0.5%. This reduction at a fuel price of $4 per gallon (equivalent to $140 per barrel) will being savings of $50,000 per aircraft per year and reduce maintenance costs by 1%.” The current price is around $3/gallon.

Savin confirmed that the flight testing of the PIP is done and the package will come into service by the end of the third quarter.

Picking up on the two developments, Chahrour added that the -7BE and -5B PIP are interchangeable on their respective aircraft. “You can have, says, on an Airbus, one of each – a -5B and a -5B PIP – on each side of the aircraft.”

Returning to LEAP, Savin said that there are a projected 4,000 aircraft sales for the A320neo programme. “And we expect a lot of good news on the A320neo during the week,” he commented.

The engine for the C919 is in its joint definition phase with design freeze planned for the second quarter of 2012. CFM expects a market size for the C919 of 1,000-1,300 aircraft in the next 20 years. All of the 100 orders announced at the Zhuhai Air Show in 2010 will have the LEAP-X1C. There is the possibility of some LEAP-X1C final assembly in China, which Chahrour stressed would be on a business-driven case only – primarily due to the benefit of proximity between the final assembly line of the engine and that of the aircraft.

According to Savin, all the test results “are great”. The MASCOT endurance engine has met all the targets CFM set and the fan-blade-out test was performed in May “with total success”. This, he noted, was the first such test on a third generation 3D fan blade.
