Arrival Of New B737 Marks Launch Of Oman Air's Fleet Expansion Programme

16-Nov-2014 Oman Air ’s fleet received a boost on November 14th when the second Boeing 737-900 came, after its latest Boeing B737-800 touched down for the first time at Muscat International Airport on November 6th. The arrival of the brand-new aircraft marks the start of a major three-year expansion programme.

This latest delivery takes Oman Air ’s fleet strength to 32. These are the first of 24 aircraft which will arrive with the Muscat-based carrier between now and 2018, taking total fleet numbers to around 50 aircraft.

Oman Air Chief Executive Officer Paul Gregorowitsch welcomed the new arrival, saying:

“I am delighted that Oman Air has started taking delivery of our new Boeing B737 aircraft. They are amazing, and it was a real pleasure to see them land at Muscat. The new aircraft will offer our customers an outstanding passenger experience. With newly-designed cabins, spacious seating and state-of-the-art inflight entertainment systems, they are a very welcome addition to a fleet.

“It is also a very visible sign that Oman Air ’s latest programme of expansion is now underway. We look forward, over the next three years, to continuing to increase the size of our fleet. This will allow us to introduce more frequencies and improved connection times on established routes, and to unveil more exciting destinations within our domestic and international networks.”

The new B737’s Business Class cabin offers 12 seats, designed by Recaro and fitted in a 2-2 configuration. Each seat features electric backrest/seat bottom, leg rest and seat depth controls, a 10.6-inch video screen, PC power outlet, reading light and literature pocket.

The Economy Class cabin offers 150 seats, designed by Zodiac Aerospace with a 30-inch pitch. Each seat features a high seat back pivot, articulating bottom pan and energy absorbing leg system. In addition, passengers will enjoy a 10.6-inch, seatback-mounted LCD inflight entertainment (IFE) screen and IFE handset, as well as a bi-fold, sliding tray table.

To complement the outstanding comfort and amenity of the new cabins and seats, Oman Air has fitted the very latest IFE technology. The ThalesAVANT in-seat audio video on demand (AVOD) system offers a vast range of movies, music, games and information, and is compatible with MPEG4 media.

The new Boeing B737 will operate on Oman Air ’s short and medium haul routes, which cover the Middle East, the Sub-Continent and East Africa. The new arrivals are the first of 15 Boeing B737s that are expected by Oman Air , and will be joined over the next three years by three AirbusA330s and six Boeing B787 Dreamliners.

Oman Air has recorded a slightly improved financial position for 2014, as the Middle Eastern carrier continues to expand. Operational losses for the Oman Air Group—which includes several subsidiaries covering areas such as ground handling and catering—was reduced to RO95.9 million ($249 million), 4% improved on 2013 and reversing a pattern of increasing deficits in recent years caused largely by investment in new aircraft. A net loss figure was not given.
New CEO Paul Gregorowitsch has given a target date of the end of 2017 to achieve profitability.
The group saw total revenues increase 4% to RO398.4 million. This figure included Omani government support to the tune of RO138 million.
The national carrier carried 5.1 million passengers, up from 4.9 million in 2013. Load factor was 74.4%—a comparative figure for 2013 was not given.
State-owned Oman Air is regarded as an economic arm of the government, although it is operationally independent. Chairman Darwish bin Ismail bin Ali Al Bulushi noted that, despite operational losses, the airline contributed RO420 million overall to Oman’s economy.
The carrier continues its policy of increasing the number of Omani nationals in its ranks, with 59.3% of personnel being indigenous by the end of the year.
Al Bulushi added that the fleet is expected to increase to 50 aircraft by 2018, with a further increase to 70 aircraft being achieved by 2020, as it tries to achieve critical mass.

Oman Air to open talks pitting Airbus A350 against Boeing 787
Gulf carrier to begin talks over an order for the latest generation of wide-body jets to replace 12 older A330 planes, says CEO Paul Gregorowitsch

London: Oman Air said it’s poised to begin talks with Boeing Co and Airbus Group SE over an order for the latest generation of wide-body jets to replace 12 older A330 planes.

The Gulf carrier will open negotiations in coming weeks, with the focus on Airbus’s A350-900 model and the 787-9 or -10 from its US rival, Chief Executive Officer Paul Gregorowitsch said at a briefing in London.

While standardising around the Boeing Dreamliner, of which Oman Air is already set to have 13 in its fleet from an earlier deal, would appear to make sense, the A350 might have the edge on the longest routes to destinations such as South Africa, Gregorowitsch said Wednesday.

The re-engined Neo version of the A330 is out of the running, with all-new aircraft are preferable to a “facelift plane,” unless Airbus presents a particularly compelling case for the legacy model, the CEO said.

Oman Air has already sourced two 787-8s from Kenya Airways on three-year lease terms as part of deal to purchase landing slots at London Heathrow airport from the African carrier and Air France, adding to the two Dreamliners already in its fleet.

Earnings goal

Gregorowitsch, who spoke after the start of a second daily Heathrow service using the new slots, said that Oman Air is aiming to make a profit at an operating level by the end of 2017, with its state owner’s funding contribution due to drop to 34 million Omani riyals (Dh324 million, $88 million) this year from 64 million in 2015.

The company is currently negotiating with two airlines in Europe and one in Asia as it seeks a joint venture partner with which to operate flights as an alternative to joining a global airline alliance, the CEO said.

Talks are also under way on a possible code-share arrangement with Deutsche Lufthansa AG, adding to arrangements it already has with carriers including Turkish Airlines.

Plans to add a first route to China this summer are on hold as Oman Air seeks optimum operating slots, though should start next winter, Gregorowitsch said.

Under a plan developed by consultants Seabury, Oman aims to build a fleet of 70 planes, 25 of them wide-bodies plus 45 Boeing 737 single-aisle jets. The strategy specifies new long-haul routes including Madrid, Brussels, Rome and Moscow in Europe plus cities in Asia and Africa, the CEO said, adding that the carrier won’t directly serve the US.

Dhaka flights suspended by Oman Air

Oman Air has officially announced another round of major capacity reductions as it looks to reduce its losses and redeploy its aircraft on more popular routes. The carrier revealed the following:

DAC - all daily flights suspended effective 01JUN.

This has come as a big surprise considering the large P2P traffic that already exists between MCT and DAC which numbered over 200,000 pax in 2016. WY currently operates a daily B738 between MCT and DAC as well as a daily B738 to CGP (Chittagong). Flights to CGP remain un-touched as its another huge P2P market out of MCT with over 150,000 passengers flying last year.

In addition to suspending DAC, WY also revealed the following effective 01MAY:

DOH - frequencies reduced from 4 to 3 daily flights

AUH - frequencies reduced from 4 to 2 daily flights only

All of the above changes are now published and visible on Sabre GDS system.

Oman Air CEO Paul Gregorowitsch resigns

National carrier does not give reason for departure, says acting CEO has been appointed

Oman Air, the country's national carrier, has announced that the board of directors has accepted the resignation of CEO Paul Gregorowitsch.
Dutch national Paul Gregorowitsch, who previously worked at Air Berlin and Air France-KLM, joined the airline in 2014.
In a brief statement, the board of directors thanked Gregorowitsch "for his efforts during his tenure with the company" without giving a reason for the resignation.

It added that Abdulaziz Saud AlRaisi, executive vice president for products and brand development, will serve as acting CEO with immediate effect until a permanent replacement is found.
Earlier this year, Oman Air said it plans to move ahead with a multi-billion dollar order for wide-body jets early next year even though it won’t now break even in 2017.
The carrier is aiming to end losses by the end of next year, contingent on demand not deteriorating further, Gregorowitsch said in an interview in May.

Oman Air targets Europe, Far East with new Dreamliner

Oman Air has announced it will stick to expansion plans laid before the departure of its CEO earlier in the year, as it inducts a new Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner into its fleet.

The Dreamliner, delivered to the carrier yesterday, is the largest variant of the aircraft, and is configured with 30 business class suites, and 258 economy class seats.
The new aircraft will allow Oman Air to bring its full service experience on high yielding long-haul routes, “in Europe and the Far East,” the carrier said in a statement.

“The delivery of new aircraft is part of Oman Air’s fleet and network expansion,” acting CEO, Eng. Abdulaziz Al Raisi said. “We’re adding new aircraft to keep up with the expansion programme.”
Raisi was named acting chief after Paul Gregorowitsch stepped down as CEO in October.
Before his departure, Gregorowtisch had said the airline was looking to grow its network in Europe as well as expand to destinations in the Far East including Hong Kong.

The carrier expects to receive three more 787-9 Dreamliners in 2018, two of which will be equipped with first class cabins.
Oman Air also has 30 Boeing 737 MAX on order, as part of plans to increase its fleet from 48 to around 70, which will see the carrier operate around 75 destinations by 2023.

Oman Air strives to contain losses despite revenue rise

Middle Eastern carrier Oman Air is highlighting a 24% rise in revenues over the first third of this year, but the airline is still battling to contain heavy full-year losses.
The government's Oman Aviation Group disclosed the revenue improvement figure for the January-April 2018 period during a briefing on 11 June.
But Oman Air remains heavily loss-making last year despite a 16% increase in full-year revenues to RO523 million ($1.36 billion).
Its operating loss for 2017 deepened by 27% to RO161 million.
Oman Air also recorded a full-year net loss of more than RO180 million – a deterioration of close to 40% against the previous year, and over twice the net deficit of 2015.
Chief executive Abdul Aziz bin Saud Al Raisi says the airline has been operating in "turbulent times" but that passenger numbers last year rose 11% to more than 8.5 million.
Oman Air hiked capacity by 19% as it expanded its fleet. The carrier has been introducing Boeing 787s for long-haul operations, and has seven of the type – three 787-9s and four 787-8s.
It also has 10 Airbus A330s for its long-haul network.
Oman Air's short-haul fleet is increasing with the introduction of Boeing 737 Max jets, complementing its 737-800 and -900 fleet.
It states that it aims to operate around 66 aircraft, across a network of 60 destinations, by 2022. FG

Possiamo tornare in topic.
